Mariah Carey's history with Randy Jackson

Yesterday it was announced that diva extraordinaire Mariah Carey would be joining the judging panel on "American Idol" and could very well take a seat next to her manager, Randy Jackson, should he choose to stay on the show. If you've ever watched "Idol," you'd know that Jackson has an extensive history with Carey just by the amount of times he's namedropped her throughout various auditions and show performances during multiple broadcasts.

There's even a tumblr website specifically dedicated to how many times Jackson brags about his previous work experiences with the icon, among others, called "Randy Jackson Name Dropping". However, did you know that Jackson's relationship with Carey stems back as far as the early 1990s?

According to Billboard, the two had affiliations with Columbia Records where Jackson was the vice president of A&R and Carey was signed to between 1988 and 2001 and since then, their relationship has blossomed into manager and client as of 2011.

In between, Jackson has acted as Carey's musical director on various concert tours like the "The Adventures of Mimi" in 2006 and played bass in her band on tours like the "Butterfly World Tour" in 1998. He's also co-written tracks for the superstar like "My Saving Grace" and "Irresistible" on the 42-year-old's 2003 album, "Charmbracelet".

Jackson has also accompanied the songstress on many live television show appearances including her 2002 performance of "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" on the "Today Show" and in 1991 when she appeared on "Saturday Night Live" singing "Can't Let Go". In a 2007 interview with Playboy, Carey spoke of her relationship with Jackson, saying, "Randy Jackson had worked with me since my first record. I've known him for so long, and now he's a huge star," she said referring to the increasing popularity of "Idol".

She also said, "It's just weird to me. We'll get mobbed walking down the street. You know how the band is introduced at a show? My little joke used to be that he was Michael Jackson's brother, and the crowd would believe me and go crazy."

Over the years, Carey has also popped up on Jackson's various projects like acting as a mentor during season seven of "Idol", performing on the show with the 56-year-old backing her up on the bass and appearing on his album "Randy Jackson's Music Club, Vol. 1".

Should Jackson retain his position as an "Idol" judge for the upcoming season, it will be interesting to see how the two interact when their manager/client dynamic changes to two industry heavyweights duking it out over talent on one of America's biggest reality shows.
