Nathaniel to support Mariah Carey

Nathaniel Willemse will take on the gig of a lifetime when he supports his idol Mariah Carey on her upcoming Australian tour. The X Factor sensation was hand-picked as the support act for Carey's The Elusive Chanteuse Show world tour when it comes Down Under next month, something he said was "amazing".

"I grew up listening to Mariah Carey when I was a kid, so it's a huge honour to be opening for her concert," Willemse told Access All Areas. "When I got the call I didn't know what to think, I was like 'Wow, this is incredible.' I will be there with my full band at some of the shows and I will be doing some of the songs from my upcoming album for the first time."

Willemse, who finished in sixth place on the Seven talent quest in 2012, has had a bumper year, with his songs You, You're Beautiful, and current hit Live Louder all dominating the singles charts in recent months.

Though he now has his own posse of adoring fans, the smooth singer admitted that he would likely crumble if he got the chance to meet Carey while supporting her shows. "Oh my God, fingers crossed I will get to meet her backstage," Willemse exclaimed. "I think I would have something rehearsed to talk to her about and then I would fumble and probably trip over myself. I would get butterflies in my tummy."

The 27-year-old cannot wait to get back around the country and connect with his fans after receiving an overwhelming response to his latest single on social media. Willemse said people often told him that Live Louder had made them break out into dance in public spaces when they heard the catchy tune. "That's what the song is all about - it's about having a good time, letting go of your inhibitions and taking on things in your life that you haven't had a chance to do yet," he said. "It's overwhelming in an awesome way to see those positive comments because I wanted the song to make people happy."

While Willemse will come to Perth as part of Carey's Australian tour, he is hoping to be back west even sooner to appear at Telethon for the second time in a row later this month.

Carey kicks off the tour in WA with a show at Sandalford Wines in the Swan Valley on November 2. Tickets are available through Ticketek.
