Mariah can't hold back the tears as she gets emotional

There is no doubt that for many, that Christmas can be an emotional time of year. And for Mariah Carey - who split this year with her husband Nick Cannon - it all became too much as she performed her famous Christmas hits at the Beacon Theatre show in New York City on Monday.

Mariah, 45, struggled to hold back the tears while performing on stage, obviously in a reflective mood after everything that has happened to her recently. However, for the most part it seemed she was able to keep herself composed. With her hair worn in long curls around her shoulders, the singer wore a low cut white dress with silver beading as she crooned at a lively Santa bearing a sack full of presents. More dramatically, she wore a shimmering red gown, equally low cut but teamed with black elbow-length gloves and shimmering bracelets.

The mother-of-two was clearly excited about the first of six shows at the venue before Christmas, earlier tweeting: "Getting ready for opening night." According to The New York Post, the 80 minute show featured "a ballet troupe, a gospel choir, a clutch of carolers, several acrobats and a hyperactive round of kid singer/dancers".

Numbers included hark the Herald Angels Sing, Here Comes Santa Claus and Silent Night, with the singer breaking into her old hit Hero in a break from the holiday theme, according to the publication. Mariah has released two Christmas albums - Merry Christmas and follow up Merry Christmas II You - with Monday's concert featuring tracks from both records. "I love Christmas," she told the crowd. "I think the albums are some of my best work."

However, there was some pressure on Mariah to hit the high notes after her performance was criticised at the recent Rockefeller Centre tree lighting ceremony. Carey seemed to struggle for breath and clearly had trouble hitting her trademark high notes. Worse still for the powerhouse vocalist, audio of Mariah's raw audio feed - without her backing singers or instrumentals - leaked to YouTube, with Gawker saying she "accidentally left her voice at home" and The New York Post reporting she "killed the crowd's ears".
