Mariah negotiating with Def Jam

Label-less diva Mariah Carey is in talks to sign with hip-hop label Def Jam, The New York Post reports. The deal is for two albums, and would pay the singer between $3 million and $5 million per disc. That's a big comedown from her recently cancelled pact with Virgin Records, which saw the singer receive close to $50 million U.S. after releasing one unsuccessful album with the company.

Carey left long-time label Columbia Records last year after a rocky time, apparently caused by a rift with label boss (and ex-husband) Tommy Mottola. In April, she signed with EMI's Virgin label, receiving a $21 million advance on an $80 million deal. But the first album under that deal was the soundtrack to her bomb film "Glitter," which sold a disappointing 500,000 copies. The album's fortunes weren't helped by the singer's subsequent breakdown, which limited her ability to promote the record.

Def Jam was launched by rap mogul Russell Simmons. It was sold to Universal in 1999. The Post said Carey was negotiating directly with the label's CEO, Lyor Cohen.

Many thanks to Mariah Crybaby.
