The story behind that Mariah Frito pie cooking show
This week, Mariah Carey begins her residency in Las Vegas, and her publicity tour brings her to Funny or Die to make a sweet and savory Frito pie. You can go ahead and read that sentence as many times as you like; it will always make the same amount of sense. "Cooking with Mariah Carey and also with Bryan" pairs her with hilarious Throwing Shade co-host Bryan Safi, who seems every bit as delighted as you would be, and who holds it together better than any of us could hope to.
"I truly couldn't believe what was happening, but I was loving it. I mean, I met Mariah Carey and immediately started making Frito pie with her. It was the best," says Safi, who gives the camera at least two solid can-you-handle-this looks in the first 60 seconds. This is heaven.
So how did this happen? Why did this happen? Bryan explains: "There had been a lot of chatter about that Fritos lyric in her new song Infinity. So Funny or Die approached her about doing something Fritos-related that would be quick and easy in Vegas, where she's doing her residency. FoD reached out to her Friday night. Sunday morning, I was in Vegas. Shooting with Mariah Carey."
But the gloves? The ring? "The gloves were her idea! And the ring over the gloves was also her idea! She knew it would be weird and wacky, and so she went for it. She's hilarious and is a really game improviser." Mariah and Funny or Die: They belong together.
If you're hoping for an extended remix or deleted scenes, that's just a sweet sweet fantasy, baby: "There's some but not many. I think there's only 30 minutes of footage. We were in and we were out. She was that good." He's not wrong; she is meant for this format. I question a Frito pie that consists of Fritos, olive oil, lettuce, sour cream, sangria, and M&Ms, but she's the boss.
"Boy, you actin' so corny like Fritos." Why Mariah is writing diss tracks at this stage of her career, I cannot begin to speculate. But if it leads to things like this, I am all for it. (Esquire)
