Mariah Carey is heading for the Top 40 this week

It's a battle at the top between two rock stars on this week's Official Albums Chart. The Killers' Brandon Flowers and The Jam frontman Paul Weller are locked in a close race for Number 1 on this week's tally, separated by little more than 2,000 chart sales.

Currently in the lead is Flowers with his second solo album The Desired Effect. If it holds on to its position, the record will match the success of his solo debut Flamingo, which hit Number 1 in 2010. Close behind is Weller's new album Saturns Pattern. The record marks his 12th solo release and is almost certain to become his 12th Top 10 LP.

US rock band Faith No More are set for their fourth UK Top 10 album this week with Sol Invictus, which is new at Number 3, while Mumford & Sons' Wilder Mind is at 4, and Taylor Swift's 1989 completes the Top 5. Electronic music band Hot Chip enter at Number 6 with their sixth album Why Make Sense?, and US band Twenty One Pilots are heading for their first UK Top 40 album with Blurryface, currently at 9.

Mariah Carey could score her first Top 10 album in seven years this week with her greatest hits album #1 To Infinity, which starts at 10, and British rockers Whitesnake land at 12 with their 12th record The Purple Album. Further down the chart, the Doctor Who series 8 soundtrack by Murray Gold is new at 24, and US pop-punk band The Story So Far could earn their first UK Top 40 with their self-titled album, currently at Number 36.
