Glitter to collect little gold

This weekend box office sales are once again set to reach a new low for the year as Mariah Carey's Glitter stands as the only new film to venture into a slowing marketplace. Buena Vista's Big Trouble and the Warner Bros. release Training Day, both scheduled to open this Friday, were delayed last week in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the nation. Carey will now face reigning champ Keanu Reeves whose baseball picture Hardball aims to shut out the competition again.

Fox releases the musical tale Glitter this weekend looking to attract fans of one of the best selling musical artists of the last decade. Mariah Carey's screen debut follows a young singer's rise to fame and is loosely based on her own life. Glitter has traveled down a rough road in its journey to the big screen. Originally scheduled to open over Labor Day weekend, the PG-13 film was pushed back three weeks when its star, and only promotional tool, checked into a hospital for emotional stress.

Now with moviegoers preoccupied with thoughts of their country waging a prolonged war with its enemies, Glitter will get far less attention than necessary to become a hit. Hardcore Mariah fans should make up most of the turnout. The disappointing seventh place debut for the film's soundtrack also indicates the public's indifference over Carey's latest offering. Premiering in only 1,196 theaters, Glitter looks to gross about $5M this weekend.
