Mariah ready to "Glitter"

Despite a devastating national tragedy - and prior to that, months of personal trauma - the show will go on for Mariah Carey and her already-delayed new film, Glitter. In one of her first public appearances since suffering a mental breakdown three months ago, Carey will attend a special screening of Glitter Thursday in Los Angeles, 20th Century Fox confirms to E! Online movie columnist Anderson Jones.

While major studios postponed many of their movies this week, Fox left Glitter on the calendar, making it Friday's only major studio release. Fox had already pushed back Glitter's opening from Labor Day weekend to this Friday to accommodate the ailing diva. But studio execs presumably figured the film (about an aspiring singer who achieves her dream) would not offend people, and that Carey's big-screen turn shouldn't be postponed any longer.

Given the state of the nation following last week's terrorist attacks, Thursday's screening will not be a glamorous red-carpet premiere. Instead, the event is being billed as a "radio promotion" through L.A. hip-hop station Power 106. Either way, the news at least confirms that Carey is out of the hospital and perhaps on the road to recovery after suffering an "emotional and physical breakdown" in July.

Following an initial stay under psychiatric care at a Connecticut hospital, Carey abruptly canceled her coming-out party (in the form of a 20/20 interview with Barbara Walters) earlier this month. Then, various media outlets reported the 31-year-old songbird suffered a relapse and was admitted to the psychiatric ward at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.

For weeks, her publicist has offered a "no comment" on any reports about Carey's medical condition. But the New York Daily News reported the singer was released from the hospital last Tuesday - the morning of the devastating attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. - and has remained in Los Angeles since then. Carey's publicist could not immediately be reached for comment on Carey's plans for Thursday, or her current condition.

Many thanks to Mariah Crybaby.
