Mariah Carey to perform on U.S. benefit special

Mariah Carey will make her first major public performance following her emotional breakdown this summer at Friday's multi-network telethon for the victims of the Washington and New York terror attacks. Reuters reports Carey is expected to sing her song "Hero" at the event, which will be simulcast on all four major networks Friday evening. Carey was hospitalized in July for what was described as a mental and physical breakdown. In September, she was hospitalized again after suffering a relapse.

The telethon, which will benefit victims of the Pentagon and World Trade Centre attacks, will include performances by Bruce Springsteen, the Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill, Billy Joel, Tom Petty, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, Neil Young and Paul Simon, as well as appearances by Jim Carrey, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Calista Flockhart, Kelsey Grammer, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Will Smith and Robin Williams.
