Mariah Carey wants her own label

Mariah Carey is planning to start her own record label, says a music world source. The singer (who was paid $28 million to walk away from her contract at EMI) is saying that the next album she records should be on her own label, says the insider.

"She's talking with a number of major record companies, but even if she signs up with one of them, she wants to do it only on her own label, sort of like Madonna did with her Maverick label at Warner" , says the source. "She feels that a lot of the problems that she's had recently were because she didn't have proper autonomy. She'd also like a chance to sign up other artists."

Carey is rumored to be talking with RCA, Elektra and Universal's Def Jam, and has told executives at one or more of those companies that she wants her own label. Said Carey's rep, "She's meeting with a number of labels and looking into a variety of possibilities."
