"I'm not wacko" says Mariah Carey

Troubled singing superstar Mariah Carey, who suffered an emotional breakdown earlier in the year, has assured fans she's definitely not gone off the rails. Speaking in an hour-long interview on the US chat show Larry King Live, the singer said: "I'm not wacko. I mean, we're all a little wacko sometimes, and if we think we're not maybe we are more than we know." She also emphatically denied that she had attempted suicide. "That was the thing that really upset me the most," she said. "There are kids who are such fans that they emulate almost everything I do. So the last thing I would want to think is, you go through something or you're having a personal problem or whatever, and you go and commit suicide."

After bursting onto the music scene in the early nineties - she landed best new artist and best female pop performance awards in 1990 - the singer enjoyed a decade of phenomenal success, selling more than 150 million albums and singles around the globe. Virgin Records bought out of her recording contract for £19 million, however, after her disc Glitter notched up disappointing sales.

Making two movies while also writing, recording and producing Glitter took its toll, and in July 2001, Mariah checked into a hospital suffering from "extreme exhaustion". Now back on the promotional tour with her new album Charmbracelet the 32-year-old is obviously keen to put that difficult period behind her. The singer, who was once married to Sony Music boss Tommy Mottola, still harbours doubts over her ability to sustain a romantic relationship, however. "My problem is, I can't really trust people because you never know what their agenda is."
