What do you want?

Two years ago, I started working on the Mariah Carey Catalogue. Then I thought the book would comprise about 1500 items and be 250 pages. But now, I think the book will have at least 2500 items and be about 350 pages. And there lies some problems. About 350 pages means the book will end up costing € 50.00 (or $ 82.00), shipping and handling not included. I'm afraid no fan will pay that much for this book.

Another problem is that the book will be outdated the minute it is released. Almost every day I get additions and updates from fans. As opposed to a website, once the book is printed it can't be changed anymore. This means fans would have to receive updates at least once a year, costing an extra € 10,00 (or $ 16,00).

An option is that I forget about the book and expand the already excisting discography on my site with scans of the back covers and more additional information. An example of what I have in mind can be found here. Fans who like to have some kind of discography in their hands can find a print option on the site.

Before I make such an important decision, I would like to hear from you. Would you buy a very expansive book or would you rather see the discography on this site expanded? I'm sure some fans would like to see both options, but I'm afraid I don't have time for both. Sent your opinion to info@mcarchives.com.

Hmm, I'm not sure what to say about the book. $82 is alot to pay for it, but it would be really handy for fans and very interesting because it's on the first of its kind. I'd probably pay for the book anyway, because if you think about it, it is a lot like a reference book and those are expensive. There's no way you can get the cost down? About not being able to update, you could just do new additions every few years but keep the site discography updated. Most books like Fred Bronson's book of #1 hits, Guiness of World Records, etc. come out with a new addition because like you said, new info comes in all the time. [Maggie]

Personally, I would pay anything to have the book in my house and have updates sent to me, but I realise the amount will be too much for some fans to pay. I love the new discography layout you showed us - is there no way to ask some volunteers to do sections for you? I would gladly help (I know HTML well - I could do some pages and send you the code), as I know it would benefit many people. That way, you could always have both options available. Will the book be bound or simply pages in a ring binder? If it's the latter, then people wouldn't pay nearly $100 when they can print it themselves. Have you tried contacting a publisher to bind and release the book properly? That would be great, to have it as a "real" book if you get me. The work you have done on the discography is amazing, and I think many fans will want to help you if you don't have the time for both options. [Edgewise]

In my opinion, everyone would best be served better if you just expanded the discography feature on your website and provided a print option to those who want a copy, and even perhaps charge fans a small fee individually if they wish to have an actual hardcopy. I applaud all of your efforts and your dedication to this project. Mariah Carey is, without a doubt, one of the greatest female vocalists of all-time and she is a legend and will be revered my legions of fans for years to come. [Marc]

Please do the book, catalogue, because it is something we'll own. You'll sell at least a half million copies plus worldwide, just from the hardcore fans. Just a thought. Thanks. Love the web site, check it out everyday. Peace. [Robert]

With regards to the book, I think it's a brilliant idea to have the book but here's my idea. I think it should be narrowed down. Eg, there doesn't need to be as many copies of say "Daydream" as are on the discography, just cos they were purchased in different countries. If a copy has a different cover to others or a different tracklisting etc then that's fair enough but I don't think there's any need to have a whole load of different pics cos it was bought in Argentina/ Austria/ Australia/ Britain or it has a promo sticker. I think the fans would be happy enough with just the actual different versions. Surely this would narrow it down by alot and it would be easier to keep on top of changes etc as you wouldn't have to constantly update it with items that aren't of major importance. That's just my idea. [Paul Joseph]

I always thought the book would be a great addition to my collection but you are right about the book being out of date almost instantly. Therefore I think I'd rather see the website's discography expanded. You already know that you run one of the most viewed and respected Mariah sites (in my opinion it is the best) and it is, in part, the discography section that makes it most fans first call when looking for a Mariah item. Whatever decision you come to will be great for us fans anyway. You spend a lot of time and effort making the book/ discography so you will have the support of all of us who have contributed and the many more who visit the site. [Kerry]

As a Mariah Carey fan and cd collector I would think that a large portion of people who view this website are collectors and would be willing to shell out 80+ dollars for such an extensive book. I recently paid over 100 dollars for a promo single so a book like this would well be worth the money. Mariah Carey singles go for alot of money on ebay so I wouldn't think this would be too expensive for anyone. [Jerry]

I loved the idea of the book and it would be a shame if after all your hard work you didn't release it. I think you mentioned before that the book was to have glossy paper and colour photographs. Is it possible to make it regular paper with black and white photos and have just a few pages of glossy coloured pictures in the middle? A lot of books do this. Another idea is to release several smaller books rather than one big one. For example, Volume 1 could be 1990-1992, Volume 2 1993-1996, etc. That way, us fans could pay for the book in "installments" so to speak rather than spending a large sum of money at once. Plus, it may be easier for you to update. By the way, I also want to say that I'm a huge fan of your website and newsletter. I especially appreciate how you manage to update every single day and that the site is so organized and easily navagable. MC Archives is a treasure so please please keep up the good work. [Elizabeth]

I'm a regular visitor of your website since a long time ago because it is the greatest website of Mariah. I think you must to put a print option in your discography but maybe it will be very heavy for your server (I don't know). The example is very nice but I think it must be a little bigger to allow people read easily the backcover (not real size but a little bigger than your example in the web). Another thing is that you could omit the person who gave you the scan in the cd information and you could put a list of persons with your agreement at the end but not with the covers because it is information that not all the fans need to know. You can put the names of the persons with the number of scans they gave to you. This is just my suggestion. [Roberto]

Firstly, I think you have done/continue to do and awesome job on your website. Regarding the book, I know that although I am a fan, I would be unable to purchase a book at that price at the moment. Have you thought about making it into an ebook? That way, you could still charge a small price so you aren't out of pocket, and the "poorer" fans would still be able to purchase it. All the best, we'll support you no matter what you decide. [Melinda]

Personally, I have been looking forward to the release of your book for quite some time now, but yes, $82.00 is a lot for some people, and is that with or without shipping and handling? Since you'll be shipping from Europe, it would be closer to $100.00 when all is said and done. I'd still probably pay for the book anyway, but if there is a way to bring down the cost, that would definitely be a plus. I'll be behind you all the way, regardless of the choice you make. As always, keep up the awesome work. [John]

I know a lot of MC fans will be willing to pay for a book. I know I would, and die hard fans are insane. And I bet the official website would at least mention it. And I bet it would sell for a lot on e-bay. As for the update thing, you could re-release a new one every few years or so. I like the idea of expanding the discography as well, but I think the book would be awesome and I'm fairly sure many would agree. Thanks so much for all your hard work on this project. Lamby love to you. [Tiffany]

I agree with you that the book would get outdated the minute it gets published. But I also understand the convenience of having a hardcopy of the catalogue. I printed out the whole discography section of your website and had them bound together. I always have it by my side whenever I check out stuff on ebay and other online shops. It's handy but only a few months later, it lacked already a lot of new stuff added in the discography section. For me, it's better not to get the catalogue published if it would be costly. I like your idea of showing also the back cover of the items, and if possible the picture of the CD (or vinyl) as well. I'm glad you've thought of that since the commercial release and the promo of some CDs would sometimes look the same on the front cover but the back cover would be different. [John Paul]
