Mariah nets 16th Hot 100 no. 1

With the 2-1 ascension of "We Belong Together" in the song's eighth week on Billboard's Hot 100, Mariah Carey notches her 16th No. 1 on the singles chart. In addition, the track, which is also the Hot 100's greatest airplay gainer, moves 2-1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart to become her ninth chart topper there.

As Fred Bronson reports in this week's "Chart Beat" column, Carey has not been on top of the Hot 100 since 2000 with "Thank God I Found You". The last time she landed there with a purely solo track (with no other featured artists) was in 1998 with "My All".

Carey's move to No. 1 comes as Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" drops to No. 2 after four weeks on top. But Stefani's not done yet, as "Hollaback" remains in the catbird seat on Billboard's Pop 100 chart for a fifth week.

Elsewhere on the Hot 100, Ciara's "Oh" featuring Ludacris remains at No. 3 and 50 Cent's "Just a Lil Bit" holds tight at No. 4. The Black Eyed Peas' "Don't Phunk With My Heart" inches up 6-5, trading places with "Hate It or Love It" by the Game featuring 50 Cent.

As Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" continues its slow fall, dropping 7-8 this week, she bolts into the top tier with "Behind these Hazel Eyes". With an 18-9 jump, the cut becomes the third top 10 Hot 100 track to stem from her sophomore album, "Breakaway" (RCA). The title cut is still on the top half of the chart, slipping 39-40 in its 41st week on the tally, and remains No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary airplay chart for a 13th week.

Closing out the Hot 100 top 10 is Rob Thomas' "Lonely No More", which falls 7-10. The Hot 100's greatest sales gainer this week is the Gorillaz/De La Soul cut "Feel Good Inc", which makes a staggering 74-17 leap. That's the career best chart ranking for the "cartoon band" led by Blur's Damon Albarn, whose previous high was with "Clint Eastwood", which reached No. 57 in 2001.

The chart's top debut is Toby Keith's "As Good As I Once Was" at No. 80. Other newcomers to the Hot 100 are D.H.T.'s "Listen To Your Heart" (No. 87), Fat Joe's "Get It Poppin'" featuring Nelly (No. 88), Mike Jones' "Back Then" (No. 91), Kenny Chesney's "Keg in the Closet" (93), the Game's "Dreams" (No. 97), Teairra Mari's "Make Her Feel Good" (No. 98) and Keith Anderson's "Pickin' Wildflowers" (No. 100).

Keith Urban hangs on to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart for a second week with "Making Memories of Us", while Shakira's "La Tortua" featuring Alejandro Sanz moves up one to take over the lead on the Hot Latin Tracks tally.

Green Day's "Holiday" returns to the pole position on the Mainstream Rock list from No. 3, dispatching Mudvayne's "Happy?" to No. 2. On the Modern Rock chart, Nine Inch Nails' "The Hand That Feeds" is No. 1 for a second consecutive week.
