Mariah has everything... but creative respect

Think you get no respect? Then take comfort in knowing that even the formidable Mariah Carey feels the same sometimes. The singer is about to score her 14th number one single with "Heartbreaker," a record that, according to SoundScan, has sold some 271,000 copies in its first week of release. The song takes the top slot on next week's "Billboard" chart, and as we reported on Thursday, that'll set a little record of sorts, giving her a chart-topping single for every year of the '90s.

Yet despite the massive sales, the hit singles, and the fan love, Mariah feels as if she doesn't get enough respect; creative respect, that is, as she complained to MTV News' John Norris during a recent limo ride.

"[People] look at me and think, 'Oh, she sings, and all the octaves, and does all that stuff,' and they don't acknowledge that the stuff that I do is really my own style and my own thing," Mariah told Norris. "We're talking about the remixes," she continued, "and I re-sing all my remixes, and I rewrite all my remixes. All new vocals, all new stuff, because I rewrite it. Not everybody cares that much or likes to do that, so I think that is part of what makes me different and unique. Because I really do never lose touch with the street and with the music that I love."

Carey's new album, "Rainbow," is due out on November 2.
