Airplay update: both tracks fall

Both Say Somethin' and Fly Like a Bird have decreased in both spins and impressions today. Sadly Say Somethin' has been decreasing the last couple of days at quite a significant rate. Even though it was sent to Urban two weeks ago, the song has barely gotten played in that format, while it seems to be in its peak in both Rhytmic and Pop where it was sent for adds way before it was sent to Urban. The video also loses play once again and there are no significant movements for the track in terms of digital sales. If this trend continues, Say Somethin' could become Mariah's lowest charting track in the Billboard Hot 100 since Through the Rain, the only single from 2002's Charmbracelet that charted, peaked at #81.

Yet what is still amazing is that while Say Somethin' doubles Fly Like a Bird's spins, it is already lower than the latter in terms of impressions. This basically shows the song hasn't quite succeeded in big markets with radio stations that reach significantly numerous audiences. With the risk of entering the realm of speculation, it could be said that a reason behind the song's substandard performance in bigger markets would be the fact that some of these stations received and played the track back in late 2004 when it first leaked as the alleged first single from The Emancipation of Mimi. So for these radio stations, being asked to play the track in early 2006, could not sound as appealing, not only because Mariah has had four big singles in radio from this album which are still heavily played, but also because they've heard Say Somethin' for a long time now.

One must wonder, if in fact that was what caused such a subpar response in bigger markets, could a possible solution be to send remixes as the Morales and the So So Def ones to these radio stations, since those remixes are brand new tracks they haven't played before. Furthermore, one wonders if those remixes were actually sent to different formats at radio or not, especially considering that the Morales mix has been so well received in club play where it hit #1 last week. What is for certain, though, is that if those remixes were to be available for download in the different digital outlets, they would allow for an increase of digital sales that could help the track's performance in the Billboard Hot 100.

On the other side, Fly Like a Bird holds relatively strong in terms of impressions mainly due to the increasing spins it is receiving at Urban AC where the track sits comfortable at #6 this week. In that same format, the longevous We Belong Together is one of this week' recurrent tracks with most play garnering 290 plays. For now, we should wait to see what happens with the Fly Like a Bird remixes that Mariah has been working on and see if those could give this song an extra boost and allow it to debut in the Hot 100 too.
