Celebrity stench of poor nose jobs

It's as if the new generation of celebrity fragrances has been born. Beginning with Elizabeth Taylor's foray into fragrance way back when, peaking with Britney's Curious, which was the most successful launch in fragrance history, and careering out of control with seemingly endless releases from Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, the Beckhams, Hilary Duff, Paris Hilton, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Sean "Puffy" Combs and Kylie, the celebrity fragrance market has proven to be highly lucrative.

Say hello to the latest wave - Kate by Kate Moss, M by Mariah Carey and Christina by Christina Aguilera. Let's not lie to ourselves - as the face of Chanel and Burberry, Kate won't be dousing herself in her own scent when the world's best noses are clamouring to spritz her diaphanous decolletage.

In the case of Mariah Carey, however, I have my suspicions she might actually spritz on M purely because she is so fabulously narcissistic. The concept of wearing a fragrance made for and named by her would be head-spinningly seductive. That, and the fact she is so enthusiastic in the ad about bathing in the sickly-sweet scent, I have no choice but to believe that enthusiasm is genuine.

As for Christina's disastrously dull effort, it is quite simply proof that some celebrities shouldn't bother multitasking. And although it pains me to find anything wrong with my beloved Olsen twins, could they not have applied any of their eye for style to their horrifying efforts at invading the final niche of the tween market? I will say nothing except no more, Mary-Kate and Ashley, no more. And if you must, let's stop the obsession with the tween market, for which you girls no longer qualify, and go for something a little more sophisticated (but not in the same vein as Christina's attempt at seductive chic: painted faux lace is never a good idea for a bottle).

Of all the celebrities to launch so-called signature scents, the only one who has anything to do with the creation and marketing is Sarah Jessica Parker. And although her latest, Covet, may not be the crowd-pleaser Britney's cupcake-infused Fantasy was, at least it's well thought through and not a hasty effort thrown out to coincide with a spiralling drug addiction or baby.
