American Idol: This week Mariah Carey

Lyrics about love, lyrics about death, spirituality, racism; Mariah Carey songs cover a wide range of themes and the singer's voice is known for being able to cover all the notes from the alto vocal range to those of a coloratura soprano; most sources say she has a five-octave vocal range. Her specific vocal quality is her ability to sing in the whistle register.

On the other hand, some music critics believe she does not communicate the message of her songs in the most effective manner. Although she has a great voice, her lyrics don't have a striking effect, some say.

But for her original songs, which combine a great technique and some remarkable skills with an expressive message and a sincere display of emotion she received Billboard's Artist of the Decade Award and the World Music Award for Best-Selling Female Artist of the Millennium, being a multiple Grammy winner.

With all these qualities, American Idol's competitors and the audience are ready to see her in action mentoring the Top Seven singers. David Archuleta chose "When You Believe", released as a single by Whitney Huston and Mariah Carey. The Academy Award-winning song was composed by Stephen Schwartz for the DreamWork's animated feature "The Prince of Egypt" back in 1998. It looks like this is the genre of music he is comfortable in. The audience was charmed. He is one of the favorites for Top 2.

Carly Smithson sang "Without You", which was originally titled "If It's Love". The judges said she was holding back a little. Syesha Mercado sang one of Mariah's older songs, a version of "Vanishing". The judges agreed with Mariah Carey when she called Syesha "cool and composed". Although the song was a difficult one, she did a great job, Randy Jackson said.

Brooke White chose the wrong song, "Hero", and it didn't go well. With the hit "Always Be My Baby", David Cook surprised everyone and Simon said it was a "breathe of fresh air" for the "American Idol". The last competitor of Carey's night was Jason Castro, with "I Don't Wanna Cry", a ballad written by Mariah Carey and Narada Michael Walden. He performed a soft and cool rendition and hit some impressive notes.

"The guys have completely won the night," Simon Cowell said and Paula Abdul added that she would like to listen to them all night long.
