Re: Best breakup album: Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (100,904) (100,906) by Stacey from USA
I think of her performance of Petals at the Rosie O'Donnell show in 2000. At the end of Petals where she sings, "I miss you Valentine (Tommy), I really loved you," she shook the microphone a bit with her head nodding as well. I think MC did love him with Butterfly being the words she wished he had said to her. I think she wanted the marriage to work but left when she had nothing more to give.

Wasn't it like September 12, 2020 that MC announced The Rairites? This is the date that I wrote down in my Mariah book. We should have something announced in September. I just hope not another Christmas song this year. I need some new MC vinyl in my collection.

By the Daydream era, Mariah lived with Tommy at Sing Sing, so I doubt she could've accomplished that. She could've sneaked out for a couple of hours at best, but with the tabs he kept on her, it's highly unlikely. Remember when Mariah snaked out with Da Brad and Tommy's ass almost cracked? I think it all happened when they had separated. In Mariah's mind there was a possibility of them getting back together, that's why she wrote Butterfly, I think it's not that she didn't love him, it's that he was suffocating her.

Libra, I've always wondered who Memoirs is about. E=MC2 was such a fun happy record, then she married Nick and one year later does a breakup album. I'm guessing some of the vocal cries are brought on by her recent miscarriage at the time, but to do such an amazingly sad and angry album when she was a newlywed always seemed out of step with her personal life.

It was in regard to "After Tonight", yes. And I do group it into a trilogy as well. Oddly enough, I thought that about "Underneath The Stars" also - that maybe they actually met in '95!

I Only Wanted I group with the trilogy of My All, After Tonight and that. Luis was meant to duet with MC on After Tonight, but it wasn't in his key, or their voices didn't gel together, so it didn't happen. Was that what you were thinking of?

As for songs about Derek. I agree Fourth of July may be likely, but as this is a continuation of Underneath the Stars, it fans the flames of my theory that Mariah and Derek were having an affair as far back as 1995. With that lens, he could also have been just a "sweet, sweet fantasy baby", and perhaps she couldn't breathe and fell deep when she first saw him? Who knows.

Re: Mariah / Whitney singing each other's songs (100,896) (100,900) by Mirage_Nunez from America
It's funny you say you wish Mariah covered "The Lonely Talking Again", because I thought it was actually a Mariah Carey song back in the day before the internet, Google, YouTube etc. A funny story is I was actually in the music section of Circuit City combing through the Mariah cds (this had to be post Butterfly because that's when I really started my collection) and found the single for Hero then saw "Everything Fades Away" as the B-side. Since I couldn't sample the song and didn't even know the actual title of the Whitney song, I convinced myself that "Everything Fades Away" had to "The Lonely Talking Again"; I even sung the title of EFA in the same melody as the Whitney song (which I barely knew any lyrics to just the melody for the hook) to solidify it. So I promptly purchased the single and of course it wasn't the song I thought it was. However it was my first introduction to "Everything Fades Away" which I instantly loved and was blown away by.

To answer your question: I would've loved to hear Whitney sing "Vision of Love" in her prime and Mariah sing "The Lonely Talking Again" or "Where You Are".

There's a clip with Whitney singing a line from "Vision of Love" and I always wanted to hear more. Funny enough she sings it in the original key, impromptu. They have two different styles of singing and different voice types. Whitney always sang in her comfortable range for the most part, but Mariah always experimented a lot and sings more outside her range. It would've been truly awesome to experience them both cover each other. The closest we have of them singing the same song is "O Holy Night".
Whitney : "Vision of Love", "Fly Like a Bird" and "Love Takes Time".
Mariah: "For the Love of You", "You Give Good Love", "Fine" (total bop), "How will I know".

Lol. Diane warren has always been so outspoken and real. I went through the credits for the Kelis song that caused so much drama and there were 16 people credited and I was like "Is this even possible?" I thought that was overkill, but 26? Haha. Now that's just messy. I haven't listened to the new record and I don't even intend to. Never really connected with Beyonce nor her music at all.

I would add:

1) Fourth Of July
2) Whenever You Call
3) Bliss
4) After Tonight

Mariah / Whitney singing each other's songs (100,896) by JC from USA
While visiting a fellow lamb in DC, we went back and forth on this topic. As much as I respect themselves as artists, I wish Mariah and Whitney covered each other in their primes. There is no way they were not singing each other's songs when they came on the radio.

What do you wish you could hear Mariah sing of Whitney's and vice versa? I'd love to hear Mariah's rendition of Just the Lonely Talking Again. I'd also love to hear Whitney crush I Don't Wanna Cry. Who cares about Jeter? They probably hung out five times, max.

That's a great list. Pretty sure you're right. There may be another one or two out there hidden in plain sight. She fell for him. On another note, do you think I Only Wanted was about Luis Miguel? I thought I heard that somewhere, maybe the memoir audiobook?

Who do we think Mariah was singing about in Memoirs, if anyone? She was still with Nick until 2016. Memoirs deserved better. H.A.T.E.U. haunts me to this day. Candy Bling.

Well at least you admit that Diane is being shady. She wasn't asking a question, she wants Beyonce to get dragged because apparently her work doesnt fall into what she consider to be "innovative"? Like how does that affect her exactly that she would go out of her way to complain about it. How pretentious.

Re: MC hurry up (100,890) (100,892) by BFF from United States
Oh, yes. Diane needs to catch up to artists who are "pioneering" the "innovative" practice of appropriating ideas from other song rather than coming up with their own song ideas and *gasp* actually composing on piano or other live instruments! How dare Diane upset empress Beyonce's army of sheep? True innovators outsource their songwriting to committees of 24 people.

So if I'm getting this list right (we all love lists don't we lol) these are the confirmed and unconfirmed songs Mariah wrote or choose about Derek Jeter.

1. The Roof
2. My All
3. Honey
4. Babydoll
5. Against All Odds
6. Crybaby
7. Lullaby
8. We Belong Together (maybe not the song, but the video highlights Mariah escaping for a younger guy)

Am I missing anything??

Dianne Warren wasn't "simply asking", she was being shady. She is also out of touch and stuck in the past, sampling is a reality of the current musical landscape. Mariah herself samples. Maybe not to the same extent as Beyonce but she does.

It must have been at the P. Diddy's birthday party. She was wearing the red dress and was all over Derek, but he didn't seem to be reciprocating. She came with another guy, a model. And there are pictures of her with teary eyes, so I guess something must've happened between them.

Mariah and Derek met again, after their break up, at Sean Diddy's birthday party in the end of 1998. The one where Mariah wore red dress. However, I read before that Mariah and Derek did meet again in a club in 2001 after Mariah's infamous breakdown. I guess that's where the inspiration for Lullaby came from.

"Hey boy, what's going on"
"Thanks I'm doing okay"
"Don't believe rumors hey"
"How's your family, please say hello for me"
"Guess we've both grown up a bit"
"But I have to admit"

I wonder why Mariah and Derek didn't pursue their relationship again after they met. It could have been a different adventure (or emancipation) for her album in 2002/2003.

Well true. Mariah did cover the song made famous by Phil Collins. But we all know MC chooses cover songs as meticulously as her own songs she writes. Crybaby is for sure about Derek. Such a great song.

Right. I guess I should have said that MC was singing it about Derek. Especially the lyric, "You are the only one who really knew me at all."

Against all Odds is not about Derek, it’s a cover song. Crybaby was definitely about Derek.

Rainbow is cute but Memoirs' lyrics and melodies are unmatched. Mariah was mad mad when she wrote and recorded Memoirs.

Re: MC hurry up (100,869) (100,882) by BFF from United States
And now we have the BeyHive big mad because Diane Warren asked a simple question: "How do you have 24 writers on one song?" This question pretty much summarizes my opinion of most of Beyonce's musical output. If you have to borrow this much from other people, why not just release an album of cover songs?
