Mariah Carey in Instagram tributes to Martin Luther King
Mariah Carey hasn't exactly been the poster child for political correctness when it comes to some of her overseas audiences. Yet the 44-year-old One Sweet Day singer took time out on Monday to remember the late Dr Martin Luther King with a couple of heartwarming Instagrams featuring her two-year twins, Moroccan and Monroe.
In one photo, Mariah is lying in bed with eyes closed and no apparent make-up on, while her daughter rests her head on her mother's shoulder. "Thank you Dr. Martin Luther King for moving mountains and changing our world," Mariah wrote in the caption. King, a pastor, activist and leader of the African-American Civil Rights Movement, was assasinated in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968.
Mariah's photo tribute showed her with one hand gently cradling her daughter's head. Like her mother, the little girl is dressed in an animal-inspired design, and appears to be asleep although she's still wearing her pink-framed spectacles. In the other snapshot, Mariah is seen reclining in bed in a white and black lace nightgown while her son Moroccan is perched on her lap and giving her cheek a pinch. Mariah, who is also buffered by a huge teddy bear on her right, smiles at her son sweetly. Accompanying the picture is Mariah's message: "Happy Martin Luther King Day! Watching King on Centric."
While Mariah's messages of love and remembrance are likely to win her approval, that wasn't the case last month. In December, the Honey singer came under fire when she was paid $1 million to perform for a dictator. In return for the huge payday, Mariah gave a two-hour concert for authoritarian Angolan President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos.
Mariah's decision angered human rights groups who claim Dos Santos has murdered many and exploited the country's resources for his own profit. Five years ago, Mariah apologized for performing for notorious dictator Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi, who was toppled and killed during the Arab spring uprising in 2011. Mariah also sang for the Sultan Of Brunei on New Year's Eve.
Nevertheless on Saturday, Mariah acted like the belle of the ball on the carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards with husband Nick Cannon. Mariah rubbed elbows with a smiling Oprah Winfrey while looking fabulous in a clingy black, one-shouldered mini-dress and black heels. (Mail Online)
