Julie Bishop hosts star-studded charity dinner

There was a lot going on in America's major east coast cities on Thursday night. In Washington DC, presidents Barack Obama and Xi Jinping, of China, sat down to a working dinner at Blair House across the street from the White House. In midtown New York, the Pope hosted a prayer service at St Patrick's Cathedral.

Elsewhere in Manhattan, at a more raucous affair, another dinner party full of big names was taking place at Nobu, the Tribeca restaurant owned by Robert De Niro. It was perhaps the least likely dinner party held in the city that night.

In a screened-off section of the restaurant, actor Hugh Jackman and wife Deborra-Lee Furness joined Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and her partner, David Panton. De Niro - who had donated the meal, raising $35,000 at the Canberra Press Gallery's Midwinter Ball - wouldn't be left out either, and turned up with his wife, Grace Hightower.

James Packer was there with his new partner, singer Mariah Carey. Among them all were the successful bidders: Chris and Tia Ellison, and Nigel and Denise Satterley, and their guests. According to one guest, the VIPs didn't just make a polite appearance either: most were still at the table until nearly midnight.
