Mariah Carey paid a moving tribute to Martyn Hett, one of the concert goers who lost his life during the Manchester terrorist attack in May of this year. Martyn had been an avid Mariah fan and got to meet his idol before his death while working as a PR manager. After his death, the singer paid a touching tribute to the 29-year-old in a video message played for mourners at his funeral.
Six months on, as Mariah played the venue where the attack took place and Martyn lost his life, she donned his jacket as a mark of respect. She met with the PR manager's friend Russell Hayward just before the gig, and slipped on the brightly coloured jacket once owned by Martyn. Tweeting the picture, Russell wrote: "Thank you so much, Mariah. Meeting you was an absolute dream and the cherry on the cake was you wearing Martyn's jacket. You gave me a true memory I shall cherish forever."
Martyn died when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive as concert goers left an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena, killing 23 and injuring scores more. As 47-year-old Mariah took to the stage on Sunday night, having chosen Manchester as her only other UK city during this tour, she told the crowd: "I'm glad we got to bring our love to you here, especially this year, especially in this building."
In the video message she recorded for Martyn's funeral earlier this year, she told the mourners: "I just wanted to say that I love you and I'm so happy that we got a chance to meet and I know you're shining down on us from heaven. I'm happy that all your family and friends are gathered together in honor of you and that I played a strong role in your life is an honor to me."
