A Memphis campus for School of Rock?

Scott Bomar
Actor/filmmaker Mike White was in Memphis last weekend scouting locations and seeking inspiration for a possible sequel to the 2003 Jack Black hit "The School of Rock", which he would again write for director Richard Linklater. "He wanted to come to Memphis and Nashville to soak up some local flavor and inspiration," said Scott Bomar, the Memphis musician who composed the scores for the Craig Brewer films "Hustle & Flow" and "Black Snake Moan".

Bomar took White to Ardent Studios, Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios, Wild Bill's juke joint and Shangri-la Records, among other locations. Often cast in supporting comic roles due to his impish appearance, White wrote the scripts for "Chuck & Buck" and "Nacho Libre" and wrote and directed the recent film "Year of the Dog". He also co-starred in "Chuck & Buck", and played nebbishy Ned Schneebly in "School of Rock".

Shot mostly in New Jersey, "School of Rock" is the story of Dewey Finn (Jack Black), a classic rock-loving substitute teacher who transforms his students into devotees of "Smoke on the Water" and "Iron Man". Music-soaked Memphis would be a logical place for a relocated Finn to demonstrate that lightning strikes not once but twice, as the Clash sang.

"I definitely let Mike know we would love to have them come film here," said Bomar, currently working on his first non-Brewer score for the Mariah Carey film "Tennessee", produced by Lee Daniels ("Monster's Ball", "The Woodsman"). Bomar said he created an intimate score for the film, playing most of the instruments himself and recording mainly at his home Electrophonic studio.
