Mariah's dad dies
Superstar Mariah Carey had a horrible Independence Day, 4 July 2002 - her father Alfred Carey lost his battle with cancer. The singer flew from the Italian island of Capri, where she had been recording her latest album under her Island Def Jam records imprint, to be at her father's side at his New York home last month. Her representative Cindi Berger says, "She's grateful that she had a chance to spend these weeks with him."
Her engineer father divorced Mariah's mother Patrica, a singer, in 1973, when the star was only three years old. Mariah was estranged from Alfred from years, but reconciled a few years ago. Mourning Mariah returned to Capri on Sunday, 7 July to continue recording. (WENN)
