Ariana can't sing? I have to disagree. Although she's miles away from Mariah, that doesn't mean she can't sing. She does have technical issues (one being the jaw-floppy thing Andrew mentioned, it's because her jaw is tense while singing, especially when singing runs), but that doesn't mean she can't sing. Just because someone isn't as good as Mariah, doesn't mean that person automatically can't sing.

While her comments were totally uncalled for and misinformed and I did flood her IG with lamb emojis (guilty as charged), like many people here said, it is a good representation of what the public thinks of Mariah. Mariah is still seen as an egocentric diva who constantly throws shade around. The blowing up of "I don't know her" just made it worse and JLo somehow still gets the public on her side even if us lambs know that Mariah won't go for someone unless that person goes for her first. What's worse is that Stella is from a reality TV background and it shows in the coverage of Mariah in the news or social media. All those promotion of "ratchet" behaviour like reinforcing shades, unclassy posts (remember the booty shot?) is just hurting Mariah's image more and more. I hope this could be a wake up call for Mariah and her team because at this point, it seemed like Mariah and her team are in this bubble of ignorance against all the public perception of Mariah. I really want Mariah to have more success and to be likeable again to the public. I know she can write more hits and her voice is regaining its strength. I have faith that Mariah can be on top again, but she and her team really has to have a major damage repair on Mariah's image.

Isn't Donatella Versace friends with Mariah? It would be amazing if Mariah becomes the face of Versace.

I agree. Her voice is thicker and richer now, in fact now is probably the heaviest her voice has ever been. I think she still uses more of her chest voice in her mix, that's why her voice sounds so heavy. But then this predominantly chesty mix is taking a toll on her voice's flexibility. She does still have a good agility but she could use some balancing of her head-chest ratio in her mix in order to retain some of her former ease and flexibility.

She should've tweeted something, but it's not like she did nothing. She dedicated One Sweet Day for them, which for me is more meaningful than a tweet.

The problem is that Mariah, while I have to admit, isn't the best live performer although she performs well, is a different singer than Whitney, Kelly, Patti or Aretha. I'll just use Whitney to simplify. While both have big voices, Whitney is a singer that relies on the sheer size of her voice and manipulates more on her volume. She is more of the singer that impresses with a single sustained note instead of an intricate melismatic line. Whitney's singing is centered on her power and her acrobatics usually involve power note after power note after power note (the same goes to Aretha, Patti, etc). Meanwhile, Mariah doesn't naturally have the capability to sustain high notes at high volumes. Instead, she relies on her agility and manipulates her voice's texture a lot, as well as making out melodies. Of course, power notes gain more praise that agile runs (that's why Mariah gets much less standing ovations than Whitney, big powerful notes always gain more praises than switching in between textures or insane runs because the public have an easier time understanding powerful belts compared to melisma). Both are equally gifted technical vocalist but are very different. Dare I say, comparing Mariah to Whitney is like comparing Beyoncé (MC) to Jennifer Hudson (WH). Beyonce, like Mariah also relies more on runs and textures while Jennifer's trademark is the same as Whitney's trademark, which is big powerful notes.

I just noticed that Selena died from a gunshot wound as well. Now that the message board is talking about Selena, I wanted to discover her music as I haven't heard her songs before. Btw, have anyone noticed that this year, there were lots of deaths of famous figures, mainly music artists? Tbh this scares me and saddens me. We've lost so many icons, and it's just nearly halfway through 2016.

Idk about those clips or her relationship with James but I don't think she's being serious about not liking to share the stage with other females. I mean, how about her 2008 concert with MJB, Bey, etc? Divas Live? Her duet with Olivia Newton-John? Whitney? I really don't think she was being serious.

RIP Christina Grimmie. She was shot after she opened for a Before You Exit concert. For those who don't know her, she was an amazing singer who blew up on YouTube. Then she got into The Voice and became even bigger. She was such a talented girl.

Great list. My list would look something like this: 1) Make It Happen (he always has strong performances in that song) 2) Heartbreaker 3) Shake It Off 4) We Belong Together (but maybe the remix instead of the usual, but the original would work just fine) 5) Vision of Love 6) Fantasy 7) Maybe a medley of hits just like what she did in American Idol or the New Year's Eve.

Now that she's in a much better vocal state, she should do a part 2 of Carpool Karaoke. Maybe when she releases her new stuff as it's going to be a really good promo and exposure for her new song. Plus, that Carpool Karaoke was a missed opportunity tbh. She could have regained public's trust in her voice. A part 2 has to happen.

Re: Anyone else think Mariah lost her passion? (63,130) (63,144)
by darrian liu from taiwan

I don't think so. If she's not into singing anymore, she wouldn't go on those tours and that residency. To say that she's "not trying since 2005" is just... wrong. It's obvious that Mariah was trying hard for commercial success of her music in 2008 (material-wise it was obvious that it was tailored for success and promotional-wise until the Nick Cannon marriage). 2009's MOAIA is a really underrated album, imo it shows many facets of Mariah's personality as an artist. (Playful? Up Out My Face. Diva-ish? Obsessed. Classic Mariah? Languishing. The list goes on.) 2014's MIAM was a flop commercially but musically it was great, although there was fillers. Infinity was a whole lot another story, but hey, Mariah's a human too. Even the greatest artists has occasional slip-ups. Let's wait for the next release, I'm sure she has a something great up her sleeves.

2014 Mariah hair (63,105)

I was watching Mariah's New Year's Eve 2014 medley, the one with Carson Daly and can't help to notice her hair length. Was she wearing extensions or a weave because I seem to catch glimpses of her shorter hair (it barely reached her shoulders). Was it just layers?

Re: Parallels between MC and Riri's career (62,802) (62,836)
by darrian liu from taiwan

Rainbow was very in-trend musically. It encapsulates the sound of 1999 teen pop R&B. Basically it follows trends. Glitter and Charmbracelet were exceptions. TEOM sets the trend for ballads after WBT but some of its uptempos were trendy. E=MC2 was a full-blown attempt at really radio friendly, mainstream music and MOAIA is somehow in the middle of mainstream and classic MC (Obsessed vs Languishing). The music isn't what hinders Mariah from hits in the 2000s. It was the image control. The only time she really hits the nail in the 2000s was TEOM. E=MC2's success was partially due to TEOM's massive success. Tbh I don't want Mariah to follow trends. She'll look desperate that way. What I want is that she combines some of the current trends and her classic sound and create something original. Or maybe go the Beyoncé route and focus on the albums fully, instead of individual singles.

Seriously, what's wrong with that? Why are people still talking about that? The important thing is that Mariah sounded great there and held up wonderfully against Aretha. Celine sounded really great too and it seems like Celine had a good time on that stage. Chain Of Fools was an iconic performance btw.

What happened with JD is that most of the lambily were pissed off after MIAM underperformed and most of us figured that JD wasn't a good manager, so the others started those attacks and became viral. Stella, on the other hand, was supported by many of the lambs. So making those sort of viral attacks that JD experienced would be difficult. Without the attacking lambs' help, it would be impossible to go viral. Maybe somebody could make a video for Mariah regarding this issue when the hype for Mariah's World is peaking.

Re: I'm back with my two cents (62,627) (62,640)
by darrian liu from taiwan

Tbh, the only good thing I found about this era is that her voice is sounding better than ever. Other than that I'm quite worried and suspicious. Stella is a questionable manager and someone as smart as Mariah should have known that. Instead of all of these nonsense Mariah should head back in the studio. It does seem like in this era, Mariah's judgment is clouded. Why would she release Infinity along with its horrible remix? The sublime Imperfect didn't even get to be included in MOAIA back then when it has potential to be a big hit and actually is a really good song. Idk about the the James thing or the Nick thing but Stella has definitely made Mariah to focus on the wrong things. She could be working on her next album instead of filming that show. No matter what, Mariah first and foremost is a musician. If Stella hasn't realized that yet, she should be cut from Mariah's team, along with her Russian Kardashian family. Mariah should really go independent. Why bother with labels when you have the resources and the smarts to manage your own career?

The iconic Mariah Carey (62,614)
by darrian liu from taiwan
| |
|

Mariah should be honored with an Icon Award. How can you not be awarded with that when you literally broke barriers between two very contrasting genres and make it the prominent face of pop music landscape? Mariah deserves to be more celebrated and awarded tbh, remembering her huge impact on the industry. Yet Jennifer Lopez received the Icon Awards first when her impact is much smaller than Mariah's.

I was stunned by Celine's performance. She sounded amazing. I can't wait until Mariah makes a televised performance and really give her all like Celine did. Her voice is in a good shape right now and I'm excited for any next performance Mariah has in mind. Maybe she would surprise us and pop up a performance?

I agree with you with what you said about Mariah, but don't come for Tori. In my mind, Mariah is the empress (the ultimate), Beyonce is the queen and Tori is my princess. Don't go for Tori, she's still got a long way to go and yet she has been an incredible singer and artist.
