I disagree. MC always speaks fondly of the Dreamlover and Anytime You Need A Friend videos in post 2000s interviews. She even released an alternative video version of Anytime You Need A Friend a few years back. In addition, she sang and posted an acapella of Everything Fades Away backstage with singer JoJo. The only thing she has dismissed is Hero but says she appreciates it now.

How can you not love Now That I Know and I've Been Thinking About You? Classic 90's pop with amazing vocals. I loved the MC and C&C uptempo collaborations they brought a happy vibe to early Mariah albums, shame it only lasted two.
I'd love Mariah to do an upbeat, radio friendly song now. Even if she takes a step back from the music and just inputs on the lyrics. Sometimes it's hard to create magic when you've been writing songs for so long, I'd just love a good solid song/album.

I love that album, too. Not a big fan of the two uptempos (track number 5 and 8?), but the rest is just perfect. I've been driving to work singing "Hero" every day for a month now, trying to face another day ( kidding). I love my work.

Sony Legacy is just not willing to invest in MC and her catalogue anymore. Anniversary and greatest hits collections that have a lot of money invested in them are when artist or band have just had a couple of albums prior that were huge sellers for the label. Me I Am Mariah and Caution were huge disappointments for Island/Def Jam and Epic. I bet MC invested a lot of her money in the vinyl pressing of the $160.00 Butterfly boxset that was sold on her website.

Apparently Mariah is dropping some surprises for Music Box's 30th anniversary (August 31st). Could it be we finally, finally get the Music Box Tour footage on DVD/Blu-ray quality and/or audio? The scrapped AYNAF video? More outtakes not included on The Rarities?
I hope it doesn't get botched like the Butterfly anniversary.

So many to choose and so many are great. My faves:
1. Vision of Love 2. Can't Let Go 3. Dreamlover 4. Without You 5. Anytime You Need a Friend 6. All I Want for Christmas Is You 7. Fantasy 8. Open Arms 9. Always Be My Baby 10. Always Be My Baby UK exclusive cover
Of those ten, my absolute best is probably Without You. Maybe Can't Let Go. And Make It Happen.

New low? (102,714)
by Jamie from UK

Maybe she had a cold or viral infection, as during [One sweet day] that's is one serious decline in vocal ability, surely if that was the true state of her voice she wouldn't be arranging to sing one of her biggest hits with Boys to Men [Boyz II Men]. Yes her voice has declined over the years but to not be able to sing at all, I don't believe it's all due to her current vocals something else is at play here like illness.

The whistle or the complete voice? (102,670)
by TheWind from England

If it's true that Mariah has nodules on her vocals that have damaged her voice, but allow her to facilitate the whistle register, what would you rather? Mariah to get surgery and lose the whistle register, but return to an overall healthy voice, or maintain the whistle register and continue to work around the nodules? This is a purely speculative post, as I don't know that she has nodules etc, and I have no clue what's wrong with her voice. If it is true, I'd much rather she lip whistle notes for the rest of her career and sing everything in between in a healthy voice.

What is your initial fan story? (102,634)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
I was watching the chart show on TV in the UK when Vision of Love came on, I was mesmerised by her voice. I remember seeing Love Takes Time and Can't Let Go on that same show too. I don't remember hearing Someday, Emotions and Make it Happen. I was a big Madonna fan at that point and my wall was covered in posters, I began to build up a collection of Mariah posters which were sparse in the UK in the early days, gradually she took over and Madonna was gone lol.
I used to record Mariah songs off the radio as I was only 11 at the time so didn't have my own disposable money to buy CD's. I loved being a Mariah fan back then as no one had heard of her, and I'd say she's an American soul singer.
A few years later in 93 my mate got Music Box on CD and made me a copy on cassette which I still have. I was truly hooked by now. Hence why Music Box is my favourite album.
A few months later I got a part time job and started to build my collection. I'd go into Manchester every chance I got, the music shops there had a huge singles section and was able to pick up the majority of her singles to date including USA imports and the odd Australian import. I went to record fairs and found even more rare CD's and records. Every chance I got I'd buy something. I miss collecting CD's and getting every version I could it's a shame times have changed.

Legacy (102,608)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
I think we take Mariah's legacy for granted. Yes AIWFCIY is one of her huge songs, but it also belongs to a main focal season each year. People still love her classic songs, Hero, Without You, Always Be My Baby, Vision of Love, Emotions, I'll Be There, We Belong Together, need I go on.
The problem now is she isn't relevant in mainstream culture but that doesn't mean people don't like her or remember what great songs she has. There was a time when she was at number 1 in albums, singles and home video all at the same time. And like every singer their mainstream time comes and goes, it's just the way of the music world, one thing I can guarantee we would be having this conversation about other singers. Even Whitney wasn't mainstream anymore but everyone remembers how great she was and all her great songs. God forbid Mariah would die tomorrow she would be celebrated for the quality music she brought more so to the 90's and also into 20's.
A singer can continue making music for their fan base but they will never reach the heights of their "mainstream" time.

Legacy (102,605)
by Randy from USA
| |
|
|
One of the things that bother me with the newer fans, delusionals and yass queens is the over celebration of AIWFCIY. A few years ago the older Stans were on here arguing what MC's signature song was. We tentatively settled on Hero. But now it's clear what she's going to be known for if this yearly record keeps happening. I think that the noise around that song fades away some of the most amazing singer songwriter compositions ever recorded. Mariah Carey is more than some relic you drag out of the closet and dust off on November 1st. Another damaging thing that the newer fans, delusionals and yass queens celebrate is her whistle register. Yes it is lovely. But that register doesn't make a great singer. I remember in the promotion for Emotions she said she didn't use it more on the track because she didn't want it to become a gimmick. She laid off it quite a bit on Music Box and Daydream but when the voice changed around #1s it was on full display for Rainbow. I think it's a crutch used to prove she can still sing. But if you have lost your belting register, are you gonna whistle your next albums? I just worry that Mariah's career is in a bleak spot and people are shining spotlights on things that narrow her legacy to a whistling Christmas act. Thoughts?

Maybe an EP or a Maxi Single? (102,603)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
I disagree, if you're a fan you always have existing albums to listen to, Mariah disappearing for a while isn't gonna change her commercial success at this stage of her career. She's never gonna reach the highs of her earlier career at this point, I'd rather her take her time and do something quality than rush something out. For all we know she might be getting advice to take a new direction in her career, she might be trying to get herself in better shape mentally and physically to appeal to more of a wider audience now she's older. Maybe she's realised she's been erratic at times and has lost touch with the general public. Or maybe she's in a deep depression over her voice not working the way it once did. We will never know what's truly going on with her, and she's in a position where she can do as she pleases, she has nothing to prove anymore. Rest assured though people like Mariah will never just disappear, she has her legacy already she's done extremely well to continue to be in the public eye at this point. Cut the girl some slack she's already given us more than some artists do in their entire career. God bless Mariah and hope all is well with her.

Things are not as difficult as they used to be. Technology has made it possible to have so many tools at our disposal, we can create great music and videos without having to drain our pockets dry. There are movies filmed with cellphones that you would believe were filmed with the best equipment. Physical CD's are almost a thing of past, so Mariah can go independent, release her music online, and bundled her albums with the price of concert tickets like many artists do nowadays. What she doesn't realize is that with people having the attention span of a goldfish, disappearing for long periods of time without any new music to keep her hardcore fan base entertained is not good. Why no release The Rarities 2 and then a new album next year?

"Emotions" album appreciation (102,586)
by Jamie from UK

Emotions album is one of my favourites, it oozes soul, her voice is so warm and the ballads are perfect. Till the End of Time is a masterpiece, it's beautiful. And one of my all time favourite songs is Can't Let Go. The video portrays a classy Mariah, something about her in that video is different she shows so much passion. Her image was so refined during this album wholesome, relatable and appealing.

"Emotions" album appreciation (102,562)
by BFF from United States
| |
|

I find myself looking back on this album/era regretting that it hasn't been properly appreciated by fans and critics alike. I consider it Mariah's most "adult" album and my second favorite behind "Butterfly". Songs like "Can't Let Go", "If It's Over", Make It Happen", "So Blessed" and others sound and feel like they were recorded/written by someone much older than early 20s. Having C+C Music Factory alongside Walter Afanasieff really helped her strike a "just right" balance of soul, pop, gospel, and house.
It was also unique in the sense that she was not yet married to Tommy but had full control over the creative direction of the album. It makes me wonder what her trajectory would have been if she hadn't decided to marry Tommy. Don't get me wrong, I love "Music Box" and "Daydream", but "Emotions" really tops both of those records in terms of writing, vocals, and production. She seemed much happier in the "Emotions" period and not very happy during the 1993-1996 period. It's such a unique moment in her catalog and career.

MC has been really successful with covering famous hit songs. She has to cover a song that is gonna grab the world's attention. So, this one song came to my mind that would fit MC's current voice perfectly. The song is Rolls Royce's [sic] Love Don't Live Here Anymore. MC could put her own spin on it with a huge choir moment from Tye Tribbet and G.A.

As tired as you are of us picking Mariah apart, we are tired of being told that we are not fans and we are evil people. Nobody's mad because MC doesn't have the same voice as 1990. Hell, she didn't even have the same voice in 1998. The real issue is the deception and the excuses. How did she go from saying publicly, :I would never lip sync" in the 90s to lip syncing most of her climaxes in 99 and beyond? And then not telling us what happened? I didn't want to do this on this board but a few years ago, I put together all of MCs excuses. In her own words. I don't ever argue without receipts. Oh and I still love MC. You can view the video here.

Mariah vs MC (102,399)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
Ok as a 90's fan of Mariah and a continued fan to this day, I've always struggled with Mariah and MC. Whilst I like them both I'm more swayed towards Mariah. I've always wondered what she thinks, as Mariah did she always want to break away and be MC, or now does she long to be Mariah again? I say this because she always says how controlled she was, yet now every opportunity she gets she shows pics etc of her earlier career. Watching her earlier videos she is so natural and composed something I don't think can be forced or mimicked. So I often wonder who is the the real Mariah/MC? Don't get me wrong I love both, but I often wonder what happened that made the drastic change, I don't believe it was all Tommy as he could have dressed her in all he liked, but like I said you can't mimic those natural early performances. I get people change, I've changed myself, but not so drastically like she has. I always wonder who the happiest one was. To me she looks more happy in the early Mariah days when she was more wholesome, but would love to hear your spin on things. This all came from watching ATYNAF from Proctors Theatre, which to me is one of her best performances. I'm not looking to be judgmental I'm honestly just looking for peoples spin on things as it genuinely interests me.
