Keep calm and Carey Dion (94,491)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom

Hilarious gay guy tells Celine he is obsessed with her and pitches a duet with Mariah to be told they apparently both met and discussed it as a possibility already. Celine and Mariah duetting on Mariah's next album would make it epic. Now, Celine has retained a lot more power and range than Mariah so Mariah would need to be on her A-game. Yet, I am interested to hear what this gay guy's concept would be.

Re: Ranking Mariah Carey albums vocally (94,464) (94,469)

To you and to TJ, I just can't get on board with the vocals from the debut era. I don't much like the album (or the cover). The vocal is too shaky and lacks the warm velvet tone or accessible elasticity that was to come. Even in the live performances, the vocals shake and Mariah's singing style is more about delivery than emotion, I think. And live performances especially make me a little unrelaxed with lyrics ending in "-uh". E.g.: "Treated me kiiiin-duh/ Sweet destinyyyyy-uh".
It surprises me to see so many people like the debut album. It really surprises me to see people vote it on top of the albums that followed for vocals. I never bought it, not once in my life. I pretended that Mariah started with Emotions. Maybe after all this time I should give it another go.
Can I ask you both why the vocals on this particular album were in your top 2? Genuinely. I just don't get it, at the moment. It may help me try to appreciate it. I never wanted to not like it.

Said it before and I'll say it again: you have a superb pop music knowledge and you write really well. You should do reviews for a publication. Martyn did it. Why not you? A.

I like your game. Best actual vocal performance show Mariah's voice off to an alien from each album, what would you play?
I struggled with some of these - simply because I don't really favour some of the songs, like Fly Like A Bird. And for Merry Christmas I thought I would put O Holy Night for the power or Miss You Most for the emotiveness, but I agree with Jesus Oh What... she sings that masterfully.
1. Mariah Carey (Love Takes Time) 2. Emotions (Till The End Of Time) 3. MTV Unplugged (If It’s Over) 4. Music Box (All I’ve Ever Wanted) 5. Merry Christmas (Jesus Oh What A Wonderful Child) 6. Daydream (I Am Free) 7. Butterfly (Whenever You Call) 8. No.1’s (When You Believe) 9. Rainbow (Against All Odd (Take A Look At Me Now)) 10. Glitter OST (Lead The Way) 11. Charmbracelet (Bringin’ On The Heartbreak) 12.a The Remixes Disc 1 (Fantasy (Def Club Mix)) 12.b The Remixes Disc 2 (Honey (So So Def Mix)) 13. The Emancipation of Mimi (Fly Like A Bird) 14. E=MC2 (I Wish You Well) 15. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (I Want To Know What Love Is) 16. Merry Christmas II You (The First Noel) 17. Me. I am Mariah. The Elusive Chanteuse (Heavenly (No Ways Tired/Can’t Give Up Now)) 18. Caution (With You)
It's funny thinking about individual track vocals rather than albums as a whole. E=MC2 doesn't seem to be popular for the vocals. But I Wish You Well has a beautiful vocal and tonal quality that wasn't translated across the rest of the music due to the nature of the songs. Imagine if it had been so, instead of the octave jumps Mariah started to rely upon to climax.
William, I'm sorry, forgive me. You know I'm a contentious twat lol. I miss your lists. You can hate me from afar but the world needs your lists, buddy.

Ranking Mariah Carey albums vocally (94,462)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom
| |
|
|
Fly Like A Lamb ranked Mariah's albums on YouTube vocally as below, stating: "Albums with electronic assistance are not particularly high on the list." Ouch. Never seen a dedicated lamb declare something like that so brazenly before.
15. Caution 14. E=MC2 13. Merry Christmas II You 12. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel 11. Me. I Am Mariah. The Elusive Chanteuse 10. Charmbracelet 9. Rainbow 8. The Emancipation of Mimi 7. Mariah Carey 6. Glitter 5. Butterfly 4. Emotions 3. Daydream 2. Music Box 1. Merry Christmas
Not sure I disagree with the list much at all. Except for maybe moving Mariah Carey further down. The vocals on it are good, but the voice hasn't quite yet reached a fully relaxed tone and makes me on edge. But this list is good.
"Electronic assistance" lol ouch, baby.

"I'll accept the possibility Mariah was uncomfortable if you can accept the possibility that she wasn't."
I am currently lying in a park sunbathing. As I look across the luscious green grass I see children running and playing each other in the glorious sunshine, smiling, laughing, giggling. Now I could accept the possibility that they are not happy, that they are visibly displaying emotions that they are not feeling. I cannot read their minds, as I am equally unable to read Mariah's mind on that stage at the Academy Awards over twenty years ago. But, on the balance of probabilities, given the simple truths on show, I think it reasonably and objectively safe to say that they are enjoying themselves. As it is possibly safe to say Mariah was more uncomfortable than not.
"And I really have no feelings either way. I'm just calling out nonsense and fabrications from delusional fans."
Before you "call people out" (I dislike this turn of phrase) pay close attention to detail lest you look foolish. As an example, contradicting Terna who (quite rightly) pointed out that Whitney was singing Mariah's part in places was a mistake.
Oh, William, wilt thou ever love me, again?

Your humour washes over me, and your sugar never ever was that sweet. Hah.
A comical assertion about Mariah seeing Whitney off her nut about to go on stage and thinking "for [censored] sake" does not a genuine theory make.
However, Whitney was a severe drug addict and has admitted to regularly going on stage off her nut. It is extremely arguable and beyond plausible that that is what happened here due to her demeanour, lack of control and disrespect for her dueting partner. The vocal is unpleasantly aggressive and Mariah clearly looks uncomfortable. Now, let us examine. Shall we?
Is Mariah uncomfortable with her hair, do you think? Is she uncomfortable with the stage lighting, maybe? Has she seen into the future and has predicted Joan Rivers calling her fat, perhaps? Is she upset with who won best animated short that year having studied up on the nominees? Or is it possible - just a smidgen possible - that Mariah is uncomfortable with the woman awkwardly standing next to her barking into the microphone and singing the song in an unpredictable way making it sound like a hot mess?
Your denial of things which appear evident because it hurts your feels and your skewing of the argument into something it is not is typical of some of the delulons on here. Come now, William. You're better than this.

"Your only proof of this is a fantasy about what happened backstage and a look on Mariah's face that can (clearly, as we both see it differently) be interpreted in either way. So no."
I said clearly it was conjecture. I was trying to ascertain what was going on. It is evident to many people that Whitney was not behaving properly and the resultant performance was a hot mess with Whitney not singing the song as expected and Mariah clearly looking uncomfortable.
So no to you. That's a no no. Parlez-vous français? I can say it on Espagnol. I said nooooooo.

With You (94,439)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom
| |
|
|
Sounds like Mariah recorded a new version of With You in her home. I like it. It sounds like a live version. But the original cannot be beaten.
The original With You has slowly become one of my favourite Mariah Carey songs of all time. It is one of the most sensual songs I have ever heard, at once both exciting and calming. Truly I believe in ten years when people lol back to Caution, With You will be declared a missed masterpiece.

William has this wrong and I suspect he is trying to not imagine such a focal moment as Mariah's Academy performance as anything less that great. But it is clear on Mariah's face that she is uncomfortable with the unpredictability of what the hell is going on. It is a sonorous disaster.
I am not one for conjecture; I like facts. But there is something in me that says they met up backstage, just before they went on, and Mariah looked at Whitney and thought: "Oh, f**k."

Whilst sunbathing today I played the "Mariah Upbeat" playlist I have on Spotify. The last 2 songs are You Don't Know What To Do followed by A No No. The latter is good but the former is immensely fun. The next album should absolutely be upbeat - and not "club" upbeat, "party at the beach" upbeat. I swear I don't need any more rappers to spit shite about how much money they have, what brand of anything they are drinking and what bitch they plan on doing that night. The rap in You Don't Know What To Do is really weird but totally brilliant.

We will have to agree to agree. Sorry I didn't see your post. I am the first Mariah stan in line to criticise but I pride myself on telling the truth. But, here, I think Whitney intentionally overpowered her in the choices she made.
Mariah is singing the song as you hear it on the record. Whitney is quite evidently not and quite horrible to listen to in many parts of the performance. Mariah can be seen moving the microphone away from her mouth when doing loud chest notes etc. as she, and most people, always do. Whitney rarely moves the microphone. She is practically licking it like an ice-cream. It looks like one slightly strong inhalation will result in a trip to the ER or a very uncomfortable morning on the loo. In the big note part where I think Mariah should have done a whistle run Whitney is shouting into the microphone when she should not be - it is not so on the record. That climax sounds horrible.
I think Whitney was high and was out to prove a point and I think it made the performance sound horribly aggressive. And for me the tester would be this: put this to record with accompaniment and see if and producer allowed this to be published and sold. It would never happen.

We will have to agree to disagree.
But if I had a time machine I would go back and pre-warn Mariah and tell her to break out a huge whistle run at the "Ohoh miracles" climax part.
I would also arrange for them to redo the duet on American Idol circa 2010/1 and watch Mariah wipe the floor with her and take advantage of the difficult that Whitney was clearly having back then.

The interview where Whitney turned up an hour and a half late, kicked off her shoes then treated everyone with contempt further reminds me that she was quite an unpleasant bitch.
I saw her on stage live in 1999 and whilst her singing was rather astounding she was clearly high and acted with contempt towards the audience, mocking us for not knowing deep album cuts she sang between tracks. It made for uncomfortable viewing.
I watched many interviews with her subsequently and found that she was always one of two things: miserable, aloof and unpleasant, or over-the-top and fake (with that one-second laugh snapping into a fake smile) and flipping between the two at a moments notice. I always mostly find her behaviour obnoxious.
Shouting over Mariah at The Academy Awards also made for uncomfortable viewing and looked even more uncomfortable for Mariah having to participate. Further, Whitney looked out-of-it and acted like Mariah was not even on the stage. Worse still, I believe it all was intentional - pre-meditated, even. How obnoxious. And great volume does not a great vocal make.
In terms of Whitney's catalogue, most songs from the album I'm Your Baby Tonight and preceding do not stand the test of time. They sound terribly dated and even a bit dull. The Bodyguard OST is good but I would never play I Will Always Love You. It's difficult to listen to and even enjoy with its bellowing of one note.
There are great Whitney songs, of course: All The Man That I Need, I Love The Lord, I Believe In You And Me, It's Not Right But It's Okay, My Love Is Your Love, I Learned From The Best, I Look To You and a couple of others. But the rest of her catalogue seems dialled in. Indeed I believe for I Learned From The Best she actually recorded her vocal down a phone line and had it cleared up in the engineering.
As far as comparisons with Mariah go, if Mariah did not have the volume, she had the infinitely more pleasant tone, a greater octave range and songs that were simply much, much better. There are many albums where Mariah could have picked different singles and still maintained her success. I believe Whitney was jealous of Mariah's unparalleled success. And she never came across anywhere near as endearing and as nice a person.

That's well depressing. The Christmas song will ensure Mariah is revisited every year by generations to come, long after she and we have turned to dust and other artists are just mentions in articles or music history books.
However, I would, were I Mariah's manager, plan something huge for next year: a star-studded concert to celebrate 3 decades in the music industry, filmed over 2 nights, professionally filmed, featuring global superstars. I would make this outdoor concert the most talked about performance, donating all proceeds to charity.
Mariah Carey and Friends Celebrating 3 decades of the Songbird Supreme London's Hyde Park June xx and xx 2021
With very special guests: Beyoncé Jay-Z Taylor Swift Justin Bieber Rihanna Ariana Grande Backstreet Boys Eminem Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston
1. It's Like That 2. Dreamlover 3. Heartbreaker (ft. Jay-Z) 4. Obsessed (ft. Eminem) 5. I'll Be There (ft. Justin Bieber) 6. Fantasy 7. Shake It Off/Shake It Off (ft. Taylor Swift) 8. My All/My All (Morales Club Mix ft. Rihanna) 9. Emotions (ft. Ariana Grande) 10. Vision of Love (ft. Beyoncé) 11. We Belong Together 12. Chain of Fools (ft. Aretha Franklin) 13. One Sweet Day (ft. Backstreet Boys) 14. When You Believe (ft. Whitney Houston on video) 15. Always Be My Baby (ft. audience participation) 16. Hero 17. Anytime You Need A Friend (ft. London Gospel Choir)
This would be the concert to end all concerts and solidify Mariah as one of the greatest and most powerful artists of all time. I can just imagine the fireworks going up soon after the sun had set, exploding as Mariah hits the whistle note of AYNAF, and, beaming from ear to ear and shouting "Thank you, London, goodnight."
I should be Mariah's manager.

The way you describe Honey is almost the way I would describe #Beautiful. I think that dong could have been a sound of a summer. But the lazy vocal, crap production, and lack of middle 8 and melodic development made the song feel like a big of a joke. But it actually had the makings of a modern classic. A bit like The Art Of Letting Go. I think both of those tracks could have been something spectacular but they lacked confidence and faded into nothing. So many missed opportunities, all the more painful given we are having to put Thank God I Found You and I Don't Wanna Cry into lists of greats.

Album of the 90s (94,373)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom
| |
|
|
BBC Radio 2 (possibly the most popular radio channel in the UK) recently held a poll of listeners' ultimate 90's album. Music Box was shortlisted in what is not a very long list and against the ultimate seminal albums in the UK from the 90's. Just reading the list has made me nostalgic for what was surely the greatest decade for music since the dawn of the modern era. There is no beating it. Reading the list reminded of songs that remind me of specific periods or events and made me both happy it happened, and sad that it cannot be revisited. Bittersweet symphony, indeed.
It is great that Mariah's importance to the 90's is remembered in this way.

I think Mariah would look pretty cook with a thick streak of grey hair coming down at the front. I really want her to grow old stylishly and gracefully. And not like some die-hard popstars who have to wear eye patches and create fake personas to cover up botched eye jobs. Allegedly.
