Re: Abandon? (85,532) (85,545)

Would be very smart as TEOM needed Charmbracelet to set it up in terms of reintroducing Mimi. Caution could be the album that sets up a banger of a summer album. I can't believe she only wrote 10 songs and none with JD. The only question is will her schedule allow another album so quick, or will she be motivated to work her but off to make such a quick turn around?

Until we hear the official second single. The one that will ultimately sell the album, then I will make my decision on this era. I get why the first single was chosen. It will help her small theater/casino tour. It will grow on an radio format that caters to an older casino crowd. It is the introduction she needed in this era. A banger that targets the Beliebers would be good if that was the tour/era she was going for but it's not. Well, we will know for sure once we hear the second single. GTFO and The Distance are just album tracks that she gave away to give a little taste. By the way has anyone heard the With You live this weekend?

The cover, an idea (84,972)
by T from USA

I love the cover, the color scheme is so great. A pink "caution" labeled band-aid over her left breast (aka the heart) would've been so creative. Remember when she was sporting that band-aid during the beginning of the E=MC2 era? I think that would've spoke so much to the title Caution.

If Mariah would (84,881)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
If Mariah would surround herself with real music people, professionals and musicians she could come back like TEOM. It's what she did during the Charmbracelet area and we saw what happened in the years to follow. Since then she's been on her own like during Rainbow and Glitter. I feel real musicians like Babyface or Walter A could really be the key for Mariah. I wonder if her label was looking at Janet's Unbreakable era for the blueprint of this era. I mean "No Sleep" and "WY" could be akin to urban ac radio and if they think they can have that size of a hit maybe that's what they are aiming for. I do hope this is the last MC album in this version of herself. After this I hope she walks away from the chart chasing for good and just makes music with real musicians.

Portraits by Walter A (84,493)

I imagine what a retrospective song would sound like if it was produced and co-written by Mariah's long time old collaborator who literally was there for a big portion of Mariah's career.

But we already have Adele now. And Celine Dion. I do agree that going back to "her roots" may be the only reinvention she has left and might pleasantly surprise the charts. Let her have one more hip youth orientated album before she hits 50 though.

AMA performance (84,442)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
I have a feeling when Mariah needs an idea she reverts back to something she's done before. I'm thinking she will look back at her last time at the AMA's with the "I Stay In Love" performance. Meaning we may get a similar set up of her walking down the stairs but this time it will be Bryan who will hold her hand (instead of Nick Cannon). This would be completely cheesy. I know Mariah thinks the public wants/expects all this glitz and glamour from her, but I don't think she gets it. People want the unexpected from her. They also want her to remind them of the raw talent she once used to exhibit. To her she might find it "boring" but I believe she should do what she did on the MTV acoustic Love Story segment. Just imagine a blacked out stage and audience. With only one spotlight placed on Mimi. She's sitting there on an artist's stool with only a microphone in her hand singing her heart out. It's really the only way to differentiate herself from the Jlo's and Taylors who will be performing.

Album drop (84,440)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
Maybe Beyonce was on to something by releasing the whole album all at once on her own through the Internet? I mean, she took all the power away from radio and the labels to make the decision if she's play worthy or not. If the album is indeed about all the portraits of her life then she could've spent the summer filming low budget "photography" music videos or snapshots and then she could've surprised everyone with an album drop and let the public decide which songs they want to be played on radio. I'm sure in the whole album there is one sure fire hit but this way we only get what the label/Mariah let us hear first.

AMA performance of With You (84,392)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
If she just does the standard standing at the mic this performance will fall flat. I'm thinking of her Billboard performance of Infinity or recent iHeart performance. I honestly think a stripped down performance where the spotlight is just on her ala MTV stripped or something John Legend would do will really elevate the song.

Maybe because of the A/C leanings? Or maybe because she wasn't following radio trends at the very beginning? Now it's interesting because she's got one toe dipped in "not following any trends" and at the same time the other toe is dipped in the "what's going on at radio right now with Ella Mai". I wonder what an album would sound like if she did mature music coming from a 48 year old who really doesn't care about what's in anymore? But that's not Mariah is it?

Andrew the question is would you be able to objective sales aside? If the album sells 100 copies or ten million will you be able to give it its due? You're saying she needs to deliver now more than ever and maybe she will, all this talk has been based on two songs (out of twelve possibly?). I laugh because I'm reading the comments from the people who aren't satisfied with this first single and they are asking for everything from a dance club song, a hard beat hip hop song and even a gospel song? So right then and there it proves no matter which direction she went, it wouldn't be universally accepted. 90's throwback songs are in now and she has crafted something that fits that genre as well as keeping staying modern. "With You" is anything but lazy and if you think she half-ass'd it then I cannot wait to hear the next song you write, produce and record.

With You about Nick Cannon? (84,323)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
To me this is way more about her love for Nick. The breakdown line, loving her from a very long time. The vows that were bound to happen. The everybody makes mistakes but they muddle through bit. However it could be about her current state. But that's the mark of a good song it's pretty universal. I think this album is going to her Butterfly post 2008. Everything that happened since E=MC2.

Well with all due respect you can't be that big of fan or have that much of a connection to her if you abandon her right before the album drops merely based on the first single. I mean what if all the other 10 songs are the classic Mariah you love and are yearning for? That's another point of contention, everybody wants the Mariah they "grew up with" but then have a problem if she's been "doing the same song for the last fifteen years". Which is it?

First single always the right choice (84,265)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
I think the chances of Mariah coming out with something in the tempo of Heartbreaker or Emotions or Someday is not going to happen. First of all they are too pop leaning for her tastes and maybe that's the problem. She should embrace some of the songs that brought her to the dance in the first place. But I do know this, in terms of first single selections the only one that may have been "wrong" at the time was Loverboy (and that wasn't even the original version of her first single so it doesn't really count). Otherwise she has always picked the the right choice to lead off the era she's embarking on. Vision of Love, Emotions, Dreamlover, Fantasy, Honey, Heartbreaker, Loverboy, Through The Rain, It's Like That, Touch My Body, Obsessed, #Beautiful.

"With You" impacting AC and Hot AC October 15th (84,253)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
It's nice to know where they are planning on focusing this era so that way there is no misunderstandings. Mariah's last "top 40" Rhythmic album was Memoirs and that's how it should be. I wish they would've taken the AC route for The Elusive Chanteuse as it would've worked nicely with American Idol in marketing. It was a stretch to think Mariah could still be radio hit material at the age of 43 unfortunately. But I think they are going to write the wrongs from the last era. It seems it will play out more like Janet's Unbreakable (but with better promo). Think of all the over 37 year old girls that tried at Pop/Rhythmic this year and failed miserably. I wonder if Madonna has taken notice. PS. I guess iHeart was for nothing as she will still have a hard time at radio. (She's going to need a bigger than WBT song to make any sort of dent.)

Mariah's voice and breath control (83,981)
by T from USA
| |

It's a fact that high heels and corsets change the alignment of the diaphragm and reduces breath control. So many years of Mariah walking around in super high heels have hurt her chances of ever getting her voice back to the stage it was at when she wore flats.

Video misses the mark (slightly) (83,819)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
Just thinking what a statement of her return it would've been if she was in a power suit (think Madonna in Express Yourself or Beyonce). Something really strikingly different than what we are used to with Mariah. It would also symbolize that she is the boss in this situation and it would be a return to form of the 90s when she was more covered up. That slight difference would've been all she needed to get people talking. If only she could've swallowed her pride for one video and just done things that would benefit the project as a whole. Other than that, she looked amazing the mood and atmosphere were on point. Song is great. She needs to be less Barbie and more bitch.

GTFO (83,798)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
Here's how I see it all playing out. Mariah is coming back bigger and better than ever. The first offering GTFO is great. I can imagine how much hype this song and video would've gotten had she not recreated the breakup theme so many times in the past few years (You're Mine, Infinity, I Don't) with all the videos being similar as well. If she had stayed away since MCIIY and having kids with Nick and then came back with GTFO this year (eight years later looking like that) it would've blown the minds off of everybody but at this point if feels like she's a little over saturated. The disgruntled diva has been played a lot. At least now she's less victim and that started with Stella and "I Don't". Also, she is hot we know that but how much hotter would've she been in this video if she had jeans and shirt on? When Mariah gets it right with clothes she really gets it right. (I'm looking at you "The roof".) I can only hope that we all share the video and song on all our social medias because sometimes all it takes a person to listen to the song who otherwise wouldn't have to get one more sale. The first single "With You" is going to be massive I can just tell.

Mariah has to go out on top (83,480)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
I'm going to write something that might enrage a lot of fans but I think it might be accurate. Mariah's legacy and reputation rests on her leaving the business at the top of her game. Period. She's had two big career defining albums in the past; Butterfly and TEOM. However after both of those albums she never followed up with something as spectacular. After Butterfly she produced Rainbow, Glitter, etc. None of the albums that followed lived up to the quality that was Butterfly. Likewise with all the followups to the TEOM. Now for a moment, imagine a world where Mariah had never released another album after TEOM. Her star would be shinning so bright because of the idea of "what if". Sometimes I think "what if" in regards to Mariah is bigger than the actual product we get. (Butterfly and TEOM are the exceptions). Now I'll go even a step further, for a moment imagine Mariah's final album was Butterfly. Sure we would have missed out on some amazing songs but we would've also missed out on her psychiatric breakdown and the humiliation of Stella. Had her albums ranged from 1990's self titled to Butterfly her record and reputation would've been sealed as one of the best in the history of music. Maybe I'd settle for a happy medium. It would've been nice to have her take eight years off after Butterfly and then come back in 2005 with TEOM and then walk away. But alas here we are again. And I'm afraid that the only sure way Mariah will get her respect is if she has one more career defining album (like Butterfly or TEOM) and then walks away for good. She could still tour the greatest hits but the "what if" factor of another album would always out weight the actual follow up.

Add Madonna, Janet Jackson to that list. It's going to be tight competition this year but I think there's a place for her still in the industry (if she works hard for it).

New single at iHeart festival? (83,246)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
Some people think she will use iHeart Radio festival to introduce a new song but that is so un-Mariah to do. Imagine her dismay when she finds out crappy audio recordings from cell phones is the thing people hear first, because the program isn't live and doesn't air for a few weeks after the performance. If she wants to perform something new at iHeart she will indeed release the song long before the festival. I just don't see it happening at this point.

Re: The truth about Walter A (83,179) (83,185)

2009 was ten years ago. Yet she still works with him. I'm just wondering if she's embarrassed for Walter to hear her loss of fluidity and range and maybe that's another barrier to her working with him. Why would she agree to meet with him through Randy Jackson in 2013?

The truth about Walter A (83,170)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
Does anyone else think that the real reason she will never try it again with Walter Afanasieff is due to her vocal decline? I mean it was reported that Randy Jackson had set up a meeting between herself and Walter and they met but nothing materialized for MIAMTEC. I wonder if a lot of it has to do with her being incredibly self conscience about her voice. I mean the last time he recorded her singing she was doing things like Butterfly, My All and Lead The Way. It can't be that he's "too stale now" because she continues to work with JD after twenty years. Do you think the truth is it's more ego about the voice and less about the past?
