Ranked album covers/photography (93,952)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom
| |
|
|
1. Merry Christmas 2. Daydream 3. No.1's 4. Butterfly 5. The Emancipation of Mimi 6. Merry Christmas II You 7. E=MC2 8. Charmbracelet 9. Emotions 10. MTV Unplugged EP 11. Me. I am Mariah. The Elusive Chanteuse. 12. Glitter 13. Caution 14. The Remixes 15. Greatest Hits 16. Mariah Carey 17. Music Box 18. Rainbow 19. No.1's to Infinity 20. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel
What's the bet William got to No.2 and had rewritten the whole thing in his head already.
My favorite photo of Mariah is the white top twisty thing in front of the clouds, for Thank God I Found You. Now *that* should have been the cover for Rainbow.

"[I]f anyone out there unfamiliar of her discography just buys it out of curiosity thanks to this #justicefor campaign and still wants to continue discovering the rest of her work after listening to it, then that's still a win."
I think that's clutching at straws. A lot of people will decide to stream it or perhaps buy it based upon its chart position, realise its pap where she hums her way through songs that have little in the way of beat or memorable melody and, as a result, not move on to the rest of her catalogue. This is not music that is remotely like anything that is popular or selling today.
Much better for the #justice4 campaigns to promote Greatest Hits. It is a compilation that did terribly upon release (something I don't think the cover photography helped with), and will open people up to every single, not just the No.1's. But then it's very easy for me to criticise something with which I had nothing to do.

I am not sure I buy that Emancipation would not have happened without Charmbracelet and that Rainbow bears any relation to Glitter. That one came before a success and one came before a flop is irrelevant. Rainbow, itself, was far from a flop, it was a success and had Mariah current and relevant to the music scene of the time. Charmbracelet was a MOTR Oprah snooze fest that disappeared very quickly. "This album is like a Charmbracelet I'm passing down to you" = the meds were still in her system.
Charmbracelet is just *dull*. I could explain quite eruditely why so, but I can't be arsed as any explanation as to why it is dull would be like describing the Sun as a "bit yellow and kinda warm".

Rainbow sold 8 million worldwide, was given 3/5 by Rolling Stone Magazine and spawned 2 No.1 singles in the United States and 1 No.1 single in the United Kingdom. Songs from the album are still performed live on stage today.
Charmbracelet sold 3 million worldwide, was awarded 2/5 by Rolling Stone Magazine and spawned nada No.1 singles. Which is, coincidentally, also how many songs from Charmbracelet are performed live on stage today.
I saw Mariah live in London many times during the Charmbracelet promo and it was an amazing time in my life. But the songs were really underwhelming. Also, if anyone says "cohesive body of work", just remember, you're actually saying "nothing stands out because all the bland songs sound the same".

I think Mariah's best album must be the album you would hand to a non-fan who has never heard her before. For me it would be Daydream. Actually I would hand them Greatest Hits but that may be cheating. Although it would probably make the most sense to try to push it to the top of the iTunes chart so that people are reminded of her wider catalogue. I don't think anyone I know has ever heard of Charmbracelet and I'd like it to stay that way.

Charmbracelet is Mariah's worst album. Why push for it to be listened to? It will put off potential fans. Would think it better to push Daydream. It is its 25th anniversary in 5 months after all.

Big Tip (93,921)

So Celine Dion's son Rene Charles is a rapper named Big Tip. He recorded this. I do not know what is going on Chez Celine but somebody needs to check the water. I'm even reasonably sure that at 1:05 he raps something like "I'm Mariah... and I'm on fire". FML. I got a big tip for him and he ain't gonna like it. 2020 is too weird. Just stop the planet, I'm getting off.

On Mariah's World (69,069) "Wow wow wow. This show was beyond anything I could have imagine, it was so great. I loved the Stella moments so much, I truly do respect her much more than I did."
On knowing nothing about Islamic terrorism (82,757) "Islamist is different from Islamism."
On songwriting apparently affecting the voice (85,407) "Celine lips more than half of her shows. Also it must be easy to take care of your voice when you don't have to write/produce a song."
On Vegas residencies (or not) (85,422) "Mariah is a leader while Celine is just a follower and a puppet. Name one single original thing she has done as an artist."
On inept clairvoyance (87,501) "I sincerely doubt half of the people in this message board even bought the album."
On approximately 5 of Mariah's 90's albums (87,077) "MIAM is better than half of her stuff from the 90s."
On not liking Jews (87,711) "So you guys are mad over Saudi but didn't even talk once about Isreal. Hypocrisy."
On Mariah's lipping (87,889) "She literally sings every song live, expect for a few high notes here and there."
On Whitney Houston's toxicology report "perhaps" being right: "Her addiction to drugs was ... *perhaps* her downfall."
On the acting prowess of the leads in Glitter (90,769) "A stronger male lead was needed."
On the directors of the world (90,805) "Mariah is the greatest director I have ever seen."
On the Prime years not existing (91,126) "The pregnancy gave her powers, she delivered in my humble opinion the best vocal eras in her career."
On Mariah being late: "[E]verybody else what's too early."
And, finally, on those pesky Jews again (91,158) "[M]y biggest critic in regards to her is her relationship with Israel."
You are not a reasonable source of information or a reliable witness for anything. You are a very young queen who has liked Mariah for about 6 years at most whereas most people here have liked her for a lifetime and are old and wise enough to assess things for how they actually are.
That was a nice way of saying: "You're an idiot kid." Sit down and shuddup.

Funny how Mariah thinks Touch My Body is a better song than Migrate. She must have been having one of William's hot flushes.

I do not believe anybody here said there was a conspiracy. I asked if anyone could rebut the claims made by Showbiz411 as to the veracity of the unlikely rise of an album previously not selling anything to number one on iTunes. That people are now buying it on Amazon Music does not seem, on the face of it, to do that. "Post hoc ergo propter hoc" comes to mind. To be clear, let me write it in simpler Engish for you as I believe historically you have struggled: I am pleased that Mariah is at Number 1 on iTunes; I would like the claims of wrongdoing shown to be wrong.

iTunes (93,810)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom
| |
|

Out of 1500 albums on the iTunes Mariah is at No.1 with E=MC2 and No.557 with Greatest Hits. There are no other entries in a list of 1500. At No.1500 is the Original Soundtrack to Master and Commander: The Far Side of the Earth - a film which was on general release 17 years ago. Now I am no expert but I would hazard a guess that this has sold maybe a couple of copies at most. Which would lead me to postulate that, save for the collection of 90's singles, nobody is buying Mariah albums anymore (which is quite something in a list that contains such modern gems as Crazy Frog - Crazy Hits & Jim Croce - The Definitive Jim Croce). But E=MC2 is No. 1? I do hope I am wrong but this does not seem right.

"For all the Mariah fans moments like this should be celebrated, don't allow bitter people like Roger to dampen the moment."
I think everyone is pleasantly surprised. But anyone with a reasoned approach to life (which probably excludes half the people on here) must surely be wondering if this is indeed real, how this happened and why this happened, given that it came from out of the blue. This is the second time this has happened to Mariah. It's not impossible but before yesterday I would gave said implausible.
E=MC2 is my favourite post-Glitter Mariah album and I have long since said I prefer it to TEOM. I am glad for her. But this is somewhat strange and needs investigating. If for no other reason than for rebut the claims to punish those that you ate so confident to claim are lying. Without any substantial proof to the contrary.

Scam? (93,799)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom
| |
|
|
According to Showbiz411 it's a scam. It would certainly make sense if it were. I cannot fathom how this could actually have happened to Mariah twice. And, with Glitter, it's not like it hits number 1 then maintains it with non-believers noticing it then pursuing it. Glitter disappeared straight away. How embarrassing for Mariah if she celebrated it and it turns out to be a scam. The embarrassment doesn't bear thinking about. But can iTunes really be scammed?
