About Bill from the UK: I love Mariah more than you do.

London Daydream Tour Attendee.

Favourite ending (99,766) by Bill from the UK
So stepping away from the racism and the woke conversations and bringing it back to Mariah, do any of y'all have a favourite ending of Mariah's?

Most of her lead singles have great endings, especially Emotions when the music and background singers all stop on the same note and she's left finishing her run acapella, and down to such a low note, considering the stratospheric heights she reached moments earlier.

I also love the "do do do" finish of Firecracker Loverboy.

Re: Tommy the racist (99,756) (99,758) by Bill from the UK
No, I wouldn't say he was racist at all. I mean he married her knowing she was mixed. I see it more that he was a good businessman who knew what played to the biggest demographics and was protecting his investment. Music Box sold twice or three times as many copies as Butterfly, and he wanted for bang for his buck. If you pardon the pun.

Re: Sweetheart (99,723) (99,726) by Bill from the UK
I knew at the time it was a remake because my suspicious mind always enquires whenever I see that MC doesn't have a writing credit. Turns out my uncle knew and had the original version on 7" and let me have it. I do agree, for once, the original is better than Mariah's version. The original has a lot more bounce and sway to it, Mariah's version is very sluggish to my ear. I much prefer the No Rap version Matty, as JD has got to be the most annoying rapper on the planet. This is why I never listen to E=MC2 because he doesn't shut up throughout the whole record. I have expect the delicate intro of I Wish You Well to have a "y'all know who dis is" bleated over the top. (Caps) Shut Up (end caps).

As always Nikki, provide your sources as this is all speculation/fabricated.

Re: One offs compilation album? (99,688) (99,689) by Bill from the UK
The thing was Triumphant was that the arrangement was all wrong. It's a great track, I love the driving beat and the optimistic message, but Mariah didn't appear until the third verse, and it was almost like she was a featured artist on a track she supposedly headlined. I remember when it debuted everyone was waiting around for her to appear on stage, it was just bizarre. I think this is why a lot of fans have a preference for the Vintage Throwback remix which puts Mariah front and centre, where she belongs.

Re: I wonder (99,669) (99,671) by Bill from the UK
What do you think MC16 is going to be like, sonically? Are you thinking an updated Caution, slick R&B with in producers? Or do you think she'll surprise us with either a gospel or jazz album, or will the next release be The Butterfly Lounge? Reworkings of her classic in the style of WBT Valentine's?

Don't go Bobby A because of one nasty individual. We all love you.

Re: And You Don't Remember (99,662) (99,665) by Bill from the UK
It was originally slated as the 4th single from Emotions but was shelved when I'll Be There took off.

It's more that I didn't think such a reaction was really that warranted. Let's just take a step back.

You're getting a bit much PW. I get what you're saying but people are allowed to express an opinion or concern about somebody if they want to. If you don't like the way they've projected their thoughts, then so be it. You've not been appointed by anyone here, as far as I know, to determine what's acceptable and what isn't on this message board.

So anyway I'm playing the Butterfly remix EP. Love the bossa nova, even though it isn't one.

Re: Mariah cover songs (99,637) (99,642) by Bill from the UK
Open Arms was released in the UK and got to Number 4. The Wind is technically a remake, but the original was an instrumental, Mariah added lyrics.

Lusty McListface (99,629) by Bill from the UK
Best background vocals:

Underneath the Stars - The acapella revealed so many more layers than you can hear on the album version. I adore the "young love" and the harmonies on the bridge.

Never Forget You - Babyface and Mariah's vocals melding together just sounds divine. I love the arrangement of the backings on this song, and the "ohs" after the beats on the chorus.

Can't Let Go - If only for the harmonising with that final upper register "go". I also love the backgrounds during the bridge, they're so dramatic.

Slipping Away - As the song enters its outro, and the bridge and the chorus are blended together over Mariah's as libs - wow.

Vision of Love - The first and fairest of them all. Love that she kept the demo vocals in for posterity, and the first ever high note of hers the world would hear.

Re: Nick's sorted relationship history (99,622) (99,623) by Bill from the UK
The thing is Nick and his acquaintances are all adults, they can make their own choices. It is however the children I feel sorry for, and it does also somewhat cheapen and weaken the union he had with Mariah.

Re: Mariah and Celine (99,609) (99,610) by Bill from the UK
Sorry, but those clips you posted are not one take wonders. Don't get het up over it, there are plenty of amazing one take performances 1990-1995 you can choose. Just look at If It's Over at SNL/Grammy's, the Tattoo Club performances, even the raw and original Unplugged sounds good. Her TOTP performances in the early 90s were all live, as the show insisted upon it, and they were all great. I even love the entire-octave-lower Emotions performance where she was incredibly ill (as per her interview on Lorraine the following day). So yeh you're wrong but don't worry about it my love.

Re: Underated? (99,600) (99,605) by Bill from the UK
Vanishing was written with Ben Margulies. So far, the only self-penned song of Mariah's is the Vulnerability interlude on Rainbow.

Re: Mariah and Celine (99,593) (99,597) by Bill from the UK
I don't wish to rain on your parade but literally all those performances you listed were either pre-recorded or dubbed. The only full, genuine end to end live performances happened from debut through to Merry Christmas. All the home concert videos were dubbed and touched up in the studios, and from Daydream onwards performances started to incorporate lip syncing and pre-recorded vocals. Sorry.

Re: Mariah and Celine (99,588) (99,596) by Bill from the UK
You're right. Puff said as well that she recorded 50 takes of Honey so he could select the best parts for the track, and many others have said that is a "perfectionist" in the studio, which is probably a polite way of saying she's a control freak lol.

Re: Underated? (99,592) (99,595) by Bill from the UK
Yes I agree on the one dimensional aspect. It's probably due to Celine approaching most of her songs in the same manner. Mariah always varies her vocal approach, as well as the song itself. My Saving Grace, a gospel tinged song with great uplifting vocals, followed on from Clown, a low, slow R&B diss track. You wouldn't get that versatility on many other singers' albums.

You forgot these:
- nodules
- corset too tight
- bronchitis
- in the middle of divorce proceedings
- arm in jewel-encrusted sling
- has nothing to prove
- no humidifier
- too many splashes beforehand

After how she spoke about her in her memoir over ArethaGate, I doubt it

Re: Underated? (99,570) (99,571) by Bill from the UK
Yes, in spite of how people may feel about Celine and her music, nobody can really say she's a bad singer. You may not like her delivery or style, but she is a very talented and intelligent vocalist.

I find her music a bit "samey", but I did have the Falling Into You album and agree it is a great album, especially the title track.

As much as I love AIWFCIY I know what you mean. One of the AC radio stations here in the UK took to playing O Holy Night instead and it sounds divine on the radio.

Re: Rarities 2 (99,532) (99,541) by Bill from the UK
Yes, ages ago I think the producer (I forget who) released it unofficially on his MySpace or something, and charged everyone a dollar for it. Mariah went nuts because they never got clearance for the sample, and it also wasn't a finished, final version either. It was a massive drama at the time.
