Article: Mariah Carey's "Rainbow" gets remastered (106,653)
by Tevin from USA

I can't wait to hear the remastered sound of this album. Songs like Heartbreaker sounds good and clear, but other songs on this album sounded like it was recorded in the debut eras woodshop bathroom.
I do hope we get an acapella version of Heartbreaker. I'd love to hear her vocal layering on that version.

Article: Mariah Carey's "Rainbow" gets remastered (106,651)
by Scott from USA

While I am excited to hear the remastered album and any unreleased material, I am not so sure that I agree with this article's assertion that "Mariah had invested quite a bit in this album". Rainbow was created quickly and in response to delays on the development of the Glitter film. Additionally, it completed her contract with Sony, which I think was Mariah's strongest motivation for putting an album out at the time. She wanted to close that chapter of her life. There are certainly some moments on Rainbow that I love - Heartbreaker is an instant classic, and songs like Petals and Ex-Girlfriend gave us some (somewhat uncharacteristically) autobiographical lyrics about Mariah's life at the time - but overall Rainbow feels to me like Mariah's most rushed work. That being said, it's fun, it's sexy, and it's perfect for Pride Month.

Have you all ever heard of a YouTube channel called Black Music Archive? I used to watch his videos all the time, but the lambs are going in on him for his video he dropped yesterday. Him and his "experts" basically used the entire video to bash Mariah calling her whistle register a party trick. SMH.

I believe the reason the remix is still #1 is because of 2nd verse from MC. The rap style singing builds the song for the gospel style closing. MC just singing the 2nd verse probably would not have had the same effect. There is even a different beat with MC's verse. R&B fans of today love a major switch in song that is different from other parts in the song. For example, Sza's Good Days when she switches back and forth from subtle to fast pace singing to her low notes on the fan favorite last chorus line of "Good day living in my mind." If you ask any Sza fan, they probably will tell you that Good Days is their favorite song from SOS.

While some of you waste time being negative about remixes projects Mariah has no control over, Ms. Carey has quietly dropped three Portrait remixes. So good. She turned a melancholy ballad into a reflective, optimistic up tempo. Mostly sung in full voice, her buttery mid range cannot be duplicated. She sounds so good. You get new vocals, new lyrics, new backgrounds, different vocal textures minus high belts which aren't missed or needed. She flips the beat a lot at the end of the 16 minute version. I'm super excited to get the official Rainbow Interlude remix in June. So glad Caution finally got a dance remix and she really stuck her foot into these. No cut and paste. So brilliant. "So you can just be free." Just what I needed MC.

Taylor (106,303)
by Tevin from USA

Thank you Mimi L. I don't know why certain people keep saying that Taylor was being put on that same pedestal as Mariah. No one has said that. That's like saying back in the 90s there was only one NBA player, because Jordan was the best and no one else could be considered or named an NBA player. Other people can be mentioned along side Mariah's name without saying they are anywhere near the level of Mariah.

I feel like this whole discussion has been misunderstood. At no point did anyone put them in the same category, in fact quite the opposite, it was mentioned multiple times that Taylor is majority hype vs talent while Mariah is the opposite so it almost seems unfair. But to your point Taylor isn't where she is just because she is current. There are plenty of current talented artists who haven't reached her level of impact that we've seen from her in the past 2 years. People, including big publications, are even scared to write anything negative about her. All that being said, let's give credit where she's due, Taylor does write her own stuff and hardly uses that many co-writers. She wrote whole of "Speak Now" by herself and lot of tracks on her current album has her solo credits. She's no Beyoncé changing one word and then getting credit.

Hi Tony, I'm going to assume that you were responding to my post. First of all, I never said Taylor and Mariah were in the same league, especially vocally. I said that they are both known for their song writing, which is true. Second unless someone is living under a rock, there is no denying (whether a person likes it or not) the cultural impact and craze that Taylor has on the music industry today. The only one close to having her impact is Adele, but due to vocal issues, she's been MIA.
Third you may not be a fan of Taylor, I'd even admit that I'm not a fan of her last few albums, but there is no denying that some of her early work (especially the country music, not pop) was quality work, and like Mariah, she has been able to have major success in different music genres.
It may not be your cup of tea, but just like some people didn't or don't like Mariah's music (which I personally think they are crazy for not liking) that doesn't mean that Mariah or her career is trash and the same applies to Taylor. Anyway I'm done talking about Taylor now, since this is a Mariah board, but we shouldn't trash or minimize other people's work, or achievements, just to put Mariah on a pedestal.

Taylor (106,295)
by Tony Lorenzo from UK

Who has the audacity to put Taylor Swift in the same sentence as Mariah Carey? Cease and desist. They are not in the same league. Mariah changed music, and is her own genre that people then copied. Vocally let's not even go there because even saying Taylor could never elevates Taylor to a height she does not deserve by mere comparison. It's laughable to refer to them together in any capacity.

A Daydream release in 2024 (106,290)
by Tevin from USA

I just hope we get Rarities 2 and one more new album. Then I'll be content. As much as I love Caution and feel like it is a great body of work, something (some spark) just seems missing from it. Also, I know many of you won't like to hear this, but I'm not interested in Mariah making a duet album, gospel or Jazz album. I dream for her to make a modern pop/rnb album in the vain of Daydream/EMC=2, with one WBT type power ballad. One has a right to dream.

I have never understood the Swift obsession, she barley sings (it's almost all sing-talking), she's a bully, and the definition of rich kid who's parents could buy her a career, she never gets called out of her white privilege. New York Times had an article about Taylor Swift fatigue and it had this great line: "Indeed, grinding through the 31-song double album after midnight had felt like a hostage situation." I couldn't have said it better myself. Lol.

I've come to accept that Mariah won't have another big era. Let alone anything remotely close to TEOM. She no longer has the drive or hunger to prove herself and that's not bashing her, it's just the circumstance. Back then she had the fire because she was still young and people had written her off and disposed of her all because her ex husband decided to be messy. She had to reclaim her throne. Now she's settled into her legend status, she has her 2 babies, she is earning a lot from touring. She has nothing left to prove so she won't go as hard. Plus the promo aspect. Nowadays promo is everything. People have short attention spans and you gotta really set yourself apart by doing creative promo and I don't think Mariah has that team. In fact we don't known who her team is. Even her social media is not at the level of someone of her status. I was living in delulu land for a while hoping for one last hurrah haha but I think I have now accepted this is the new reality of icon. If she does prove me wrong I would be the happiest but I doubt it. I just hope she's mentally in a good space and we get the chance to enjoy some new material when she's ready. Whether it's an album or collabs.

I agree, especially when some people on this board were recently complaining about how Taylor Swift is screwing her fans over by releasing multiple vinyls with different songs on them. They need to keep up that same energy with Mariah. I rather spend an extra $100 bucks out of pocket for a couple new songs (I agree it's outrageous, I'm just making a point), then spend thousands of dollars (tickets, plus air fair, plus hotels), to see Mariah press play on tape player and lip sync to new vocals.
I know that touring is where money is made, but if she has time to record all of these pre-recorded songs, she has enough time to drop a new album. Especially since her new vocals sound really good and healthy. Or she should do strip down versions of some songs (like the promo clips she posted).
I would not even be mad if half of the songs were live and the other half lipped, but come on, no one (especially in this economy) can say that it is reasonable and appropriate to sing for 2 minutes in a 2 hour long show.
One positive note is that her vocals are sounding good again.

I don't post on here a ton, but I always enjoy reading the messages on this board. Mariah is my favourite recording artist of all time. And I have been voting every day for her to get into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame because I truly believe that she deserves it for everything that she has contributed to the music industry.
But I am sorry, as a long time fan (thirty-one years), I am also completely appalled at how much Lip-syncing she did for this Vegas show.
Although I didn't like it, when she lip synced just the hard parts of the song, I accepted it for years because at least there were a lot of parts that she did sing live and we had some really nice a cappella moments, etc. But what she is doing now is what Mariah would call "something different".
It's very apparent now that she really does not care about her fans. If she did, she would not go on stage and do this. She is literally charging people to see her poorly lip syncing 98% of her show, barely moving, and looking out of it. I don't know how anybody can look at this and even think this is remotely OK. This is a woman who goes on and on about how much her "lambily" means to her, which is obviously BS.
If she needs to lip sync to everything to very, very least she could do is move around more and maybe work a little bit more on some choreography, but she doesn't even give a crap enough to do that. Even Britney did that when she was performing under her conservatorship..
I thought when people said she only sang 10% of her Christmas shows last year live that people were exaggerating because she lip synced so much of it. I had no idea that was actually the case as I didn't watch clips from that tour until this weekend.
I get that she needs to make money, but she should really try to do it another way because this is damaging to her legacy and a lot of the stuff that the haters say about her "performances" and voice is true. Being in the industry this long and "not having anything left to prove" is a pathetic excuse.

Ok so everyone is innocent until proven guilty. I'm asking this question not for your opinion about if Diddy is guilty or innocent, but I'm curious if the allegations about illegal activity turns out to be true (particularly the traffic allegation), how do you think that would affect some of Mariah's music?
I know some people won't even listen to BGK from Memoirs because of RK, but songs like Honey and the remix has Diddy all over it, and those are big popular songs in her discography. I ask this question out of curiosity, no answer is wrong or incorrect, everyone is entitled to their views and opinions.

We will see how she sounds during The Celebration of Mimishows. I'm hoping for 50% live vocals, 25% playback and 25% lipped. Also I hope she throws in some deeper cut songs and acapella versions of songs. I was recently watching the 2018 My All performance she did in Singapore, man oh man, it has to drive her crazy that one night she can be struggling to hit notes, then the next night she can sing and sound close to her 90s voice. Shoot sometimes this happens all in the same night. But anyway no matter what her voice sounds like, I just appreciate that she is still making music and still touring and singing, but I'm not going to lie, those moments (they usually happen once sometimes twice during her shows or tour runs), when her voice sounds like a mature version of the 90's on a song or two (I'm talking about completely live singing), my eyes light up and I'm so happy, you can even see it in her eyes and expression too.

I think you're on to something. She redid WBT. Maybe the Butterfly Lounge turned into a a redo of TEOM with duets. Maybe a re-release on the anniversary with a bonus disc of remakes from Mimi? Although, do CD's even sell anymore? I think Mariah should focus on SUD, if it's actually a thing. A new album would not do well in this climate for Mariah. Ariana's Grande album will not debut with big numbers, and she's the biggest streaming artist out there. The reason Mariah focuses on the Christmas album every year is because it actually makes money and there is interest in it.
