Everything Fades Away (95,474)
by Bill from the UK
| |

Listening to this song, half a bottle of wine down. How people can't acknowledge this as the perfect, true ending to Music Box is baffling. This song is incredible and heart wrenching and beautiful. It is one of the best things she has ever done. I implore the US fans to make a Music Box playlist with this as the closing track once it is available on streaming platforms on 2nd October. It is just the most perfect end to what is a great, great album.

Me too. I'm praying the end of the celebrations concludes with the debut album remastered, with the "original" album that you mention, and the demo versions/Tommy demo tape.

Close My Eyes is an acoustic version. I wonder if it's the version she performed on GMA. To be getting unused tracks from Emotions, Music Box and Daydream eras is unreal.

Rainbow Era Remix EPs (95,397)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Here are my hopes for the Rainbow EPs. Let's cross our fingers and toes that we get the complete set with nothing missed... though by recent trends there are likely to be some disappointments.
Heartbreaker Radio Edit (often misprinted as "Album Version featuring Jay. Z", it has a shorter break between verses and axes one of the final choruses) Remix Remix Edit [P] (only available on a few promo CDs, this version cuts out the introduction) No Rap Version Junior's Club Mix Junior's Club Dub Junior's Hard Mix Love Hangover/Heartbreaker
I think these were probably the last "great" remixes Mariah ever did. The Junior Vasquez "If You Should Ever Be Lonely" mixes were inspired, and remain a work out staple to this day. I will eat my hat if the Remix Edit appears.
Thank God I Found You Make It Last Remix Make It Last Remix w/o Rap Make It Last Remix Instrumental Make It Last Remix Edit Make It Last Remix Edit w/o Rap Stargate Radio Edit Celebratory Mix
I'd be interested to see if the Make It Last edits (both with and without rap) appear as Mariah seems to not be including edits of the mixes. I loved the Stargate Radio Edit, I think it's the best version. Sidenote: really hope they use the "twisty top" cover and not the "hat with braids" cover.
Against All Odds Single Version (a.k.a. Westlife Version) Pound Boys Radio Edit Pound Boys Main Mix Pound Boys Deep Dub [P] Pound Boys Dub Backing Track [P] Instrumental
The "Backing Track" appeared on a very rare Brazilian promo CD (899.929/2-495879), so it is unlikely this will appear. Not expecting the Instrumental to make it either. The Pound Boy mixes were on that rare Brazilian promo CD as well, but were more easily obtainable on the UK vinyl release. The Westlife version is a bit of car crash so wouldn't mind this not appearing and it remaining a Mariah only affair.
Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme) Radio Edit Morales Club Mix Edit Morales Club Mix Morales Instrumental Morales Revival Triumphant Mix Morales Revival Club Mix* [P]
Some good Morales remixes here, especially hopeful that the Revival Club Mix appears as it has only ever been available on a French promo-only 12" up until now.
Crybaby Radio Edit [P]
I doubt this will appear, unless it is "double-a sided" with CTTA, like upon its release. A shame as this is a promo-only edit we probably won't see again.

The strings are the best part about Honey. The give it that "James Bond" feel. Agree, the remix really suffers without them and it would have probably been the perfect version of the song had they been included.

#1s EPs and recap (95,394)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Hello all. Bill's Weekly Remix EP Recap is back. Have you missed me?
So wow, where do we start? Mariah went all out with some mega rare remixes for this round. The "Mariah En Espanol" EP was an unexpected surprise, and closed the gaps with Hero, Open Arms and My All having their Spanish versions released which were missed during their respective eras. Great to also see the promo-only remixes for Mi Todo, which are great, available commercially for the first time ever.
And then Mariah went above and beyond with Do You Know Where You're Going To and the incredibly rare club mixes, only ever available on an extremely scarce South American promo picture disc previously. These are some of my most favoured mixes, and the instrumental break in the "bonita" versions is excellent.
I Still Believe delivered with a stonking 13 versions, the only omissions being some edits and instrumentals. It bested the existing EP of 10 tracks, which should really now be retired to avoid "clogging up" Mariah's online streaming catalogue. Sweetheart also came through with the fantastic "pounding" remixes (good for the cross trainer), three of which had only ever been available on a promo vinyl release before. Mariah had included the regular album versions for the #1s EPs, my thought here is that as the "#1 to Crapfinity" album essentially replaced the 1998 release, the regular versions have been included. Really though, DYKWYGT is the only track in danger of being erased, as Sweetheart and I Still Believe both appeared on Mariah's Greatest Hits.
Disappointing that When You Believe didn't get anything, albeit I did predict this as a slightly different TV Track and an Instrumental aren't exactly much to write home about, but it would have been nice to have had the live version from the Oscars included.
As per previous posts, * denotes vinyl only.
Promo only releases now available: Sweetheart (A Cappella) Sweetheart (M's More Bounce to the Ounce Vocal)* Sweetheart (M's Pounding Dub)* Sweetheart (M's Beats & Bounces Mix)* DYKWYGT (Mahogany Club) DYKWYGT (Mahogany Club Extended) DYKWYGT (Mahogany for Clubbers) DYKWYGT (Mariah Bonita) DYKWYGT (Mariah Bonita Club) DYKWYGT (Mariah Bonita Club Edit)
Below is a list of the remixes that did not make the cut, in addition to When You Believe mentioned above. As before, * denotes vinyl only, and [P] is a promotional only remix.
Sweetheart (Radio Edit) Sweetheart (The Story Instrumental) Sweetheart (Instrumental) [P] I Still Believe (Damizza Remix Edit) I Still Believe (Damizza Remix Instrumental)* I Still Believe (Stevie J. Remix Edit) [P] I Still Believe (Stevie J. Remix Instrumental)*
The EPs have been a bit sporadic with whether they include edits and instrumentals. I hope for when Thank God I Found You's turn rolls around (hopefully next week), that the Make It Last Instrumental is available, as this is just divine to listen to.
Missed Remixes Log I Don't Wanna Cry (Radio Edit) [P] Medley (Prisoner/All In Your Mind/Someday) Can't Let Go (Edit) Can't Let Go (Edit - No Intro) [P] Make It Happen (Extended Version - Radio Edit) [P] Endless Love (Instrumental) Endless Love (Mariah Only) Endless Love (Luther Only) All I Want for Christmas Is You (So So Def Remix) All I Want for Christmas Is You (Extra Festive) All I Want for Christmas Is You (Super Festive) All I Want for Christmas Is You (Mariah's New Dance Mix) All I Want for Christmas Is You (Mariah's New Dance Mix Edit) All I Want for Christmas Is You (Mariah's New Dance Mix Extended) Joy to the World (Celebration Mix) Joy to the World (Celebration Mix Edit) Joy to the World (Flava Mix) Joy to the World (Crash Dub Crash)* Joy to the World (Club Mix) Miss You Most (At Christmas Time) (Radio Version) [P] Fantasy (Puffy's Mix) Always Be My Baby (Reggae Soul Mix) Always Be My Baby (Reggae Soul Dub) Always Be My Baby (Reggae Soul Acapella)* Honey (Smooth Version No Intro) [P] Butterfly (Sambatterfly) [P] Butterfly (TV Track) [P] Butterfly (TV Track Short) [P] My All (Full Crew Main Mix) My All (Full Crew Main Mix Without Rap)* [P] My All (Full Crew Main Mix Instrumental)* [P] Sweetheart (Radio Edit) Sweetheart (The Story Instrumental) Sweetheart (Instrumental) [P] When You Believe (TV Track) When You Believe (Instrumental) I Still Believe (Damizza Remix Edit) I Still Believe (Damizza Remix Instrumental)* I Still Believe (Stevie J. Yes agree, it's different with The One (No Rap) as JD's contribution is minimal, albeit still has his hallmark level of annoyingness. Sweetheart being more a "duet", the rap actually works and adds to a rather bland song. And yes, it was planned as the lead single but was canned right before release as radio wasn't playing it. Hence singles were pressed both in the US and Europe but were never commercially issued.

Amazing to think the impact this man had on MC, considering their relationship was, seemingly, short lived (I theorise he was on the scene as far back as 1995 and may have contributed to the breakdown of the marriage to Tommy). I have one minor niggle with the list: Damizza has a chapter in his book called "Don't Forget About Us", all about how he ended things with Mariah (whatever "things" were, friendship or maybe something more). The lyrics fit his version of events.

I get what you're saying, it is Mariah's story to tell in whatever way she wants. How airing your family's dirty laundry in public for the entire world to read is cathartic and healing is beyond me. But maybe that's just me. She is known as a singer and, desperately, has always sought recognition for her songwriting. Mariah's previous stance of adopting a wall of silence on all things personal said all there was to say really, e.g., it's not worth my time to comment on tabloid fodder. We know the Tommy story. And Nick. And Stella. We know about Glitter. We know she's biracial. We know Alison has been a thorn in her side. We know she doesn't know J. Lo.
What we *don't* know is how she came up with that heavenly, gospel flavoured bridge in Vision of Love, her behind the scenes battle to put out the Fantasy remix she believed so much in, how Outside took on so many meanings for so many people, how she unknowingly contributed to the holiday song canon when she (at first, reluctantly) made her Christmas album, how motherhood has changed her drive and perspective, how she worked with Gavin Christopher before Ben Margulies came along, how she sang with those jazz musicians late at night in her youth, how Someday was apparently considered being purchased for Whitney's "I'm Your Baby Tonight" album but Mariah believed so much in it that she turned down the offer. This is what I want to read about.
But, like I said, maybe it's just me.

Daydream anniversary (95,342)
by Bill from the UK

Apparently the Underneath the Stars video will appear on or around Daydream's anniversary this month. David Morales was interviewed recently and commented that he did remixes for Forever, but that they never were released. I wonder if MC will put out a Forever EP around the same time also?

I see what you mean, but at the same time it seems this great opportunity to shake off the forever-late, shady, arrogant diva image she's cultured over the years and display her musical genius and an insight into her production technique, writing for others, vocal harmonies, singing style etc. has been lost. From what I've seen so far, the book is shaping up to be one big score settler. And who does that benefit?
