2013 The Art Of Letting Go (103,719)
by T from USA

I've always seen this record as an old school vibe album so obviously I would include Mesmerized, which was recorded in 2012. I would've also loved Up Out Of My Face on that album as it's a way of letting someone go. Imagine the duet with Nicki at that stage during American Idol? All in all I'd keep the album short and sweet but impactful. PS. I always pictured Betcha, Hate U, and It's a Wrap also perfect fits for it. Look at the story this album would tell about her relationship:
1. Betcha Gon' Know 2. Faded 3. Up Out My Face (ft. Nicki Minaj) 4. H.A.T.E.U. 5. Dedicated (ft. Nas) 6. Beautiful (ft. Miguel) 7. You're Mine 8. You Don't Know What To Do 9. Camouflage 10. Mesmerized 11. Cry 12. Meteorite 13. It's A Wrap (ft. Mary J Blige) 14. The Art Of Letting Go
PS. I still think Obsessed on Einstein would've been a game changer.

Einstein re-release in 2009 instead (103,711)

I guess you do make a point. But I actually think Obsessed, It's a Wrap do match the other juvenile lyrics of other songs on the album, maybe they could be joined by Up Out My Face and Standing O and that would've rounded out Einstein nicely. (UOMF actually references Harvard, it basically writes itself.) The autotune on those songs also would lend some continuity. I just think having TMB, Obsessed and IAW all on one album would make E=MC2 a streaming monster like Daydream.

Einstein re-release in 2009 instead (103,708)

I don't know, Obsessed was a last minute addition to MOAIA after Bagpipes was released and she wrote it in response specifically. I don't think that sonically, it makes sense for those 4 songs to be on E=MC2 because her voice had changed again by that point (it sounded fuller vs the songs on E), and they just don't flow well with the party atmosphere she had with that album. DFAU etc. worked well for TEOM because there was still a sonic theme going that she was after and they fit well with the rest of the album. Those four just don't go on E.

Einstein re-release in 2009 instead (103,705)

Well we don't really know when Mariah records but it is clear that she saves things for later dates and times. But I have a feeling it was done after she already worked with the Dream on TMB. I think probably early 2009. That's why I wonder if a re-release of Einstein might have been the better way to go (instead of recording a whole album and waiting until the Fall of 2009). Even if the original E=MC2's track list had Obsessed as track 7 to replace Love Story, and It's a Wrap as track 9 instead of Last Kiss, in my opinion it would've fit so well and been the greatest Mimi album ever. (Betcha and Hate U would fit better on the Elusive Chanteuse.)

We all know the tragic story of E=MC2's trajectory after the first single, the disappearance of Mimi and then the re-emergence in depression. In hindsight, with the lack of commercial success she's had since (except Christmas), one really can look back at the mistakes made like not releasing Migrate as the second single and think it was her last big change at commercial dominance. Would've a re-release like she did with TEOM made a big difference? Would it have sparked new life for the album? Imagine Obsessed was the fourth single from a repackaged album. I think I would've taken that over MOAIA.
1. Migrate (ft. T-Pain) 2. Touch My Body 3. Cruise Control (ft. Damian Marley) 4. I Stay In Love 5. Side Effects (ft. Young Jeezy) 6. I'm That Chick 7. Love Story 8. I'll Be Lovin You Long Time 9. Last Kiss 10. Thanks For Nothing 11. OOC 12. For The Record 13. Bye Bye 14. I Wish You Well
15. Obsessed 16. Betcha Gon' Know 17. H.A.T.E.U. 18. It's a Wrap

No more tours. Just one more studio album is all I want for Christmas. And then just strictly focus on anniversary releases like Daydream30, Butterfly30, Rainbow30. Just keep cementing that legacy Mimi, like you've been doing. No need for live singing anymore. I wonder if Mariah secretly attempted the voice repair surgery with no success?

MB30 just for the nostalgia (103,456)

This anniversary is kind of bittersweet. It's a great time for the fans but it's also so sad. It harkens back to time and place in many of our lives where Mariah was at the top of the mountain, where her voice sounded like a literal angel and her beauty was natural and unmatched. Her latest Instagram post as an homage to Dreamlover was the hardest pill to swallow yet as it showed us a glimpse of what could've been with Mariah all these years. The absolute natural beauty. If only she was comfortable in her own skin, if only she didn't deal with mental health issues, if only her first husband wasn't such a control freak, if only she could've lived happily ever after. Maybe this picture would be what Mariah would've actually been like all these years instead of just a brief moment of dress up.

I wonder what ever happened to Mariah's manager who managed her after her split with Tommy, so basically from the Butterfly album on. It was reported that Mariah threw her out of a car before The Emancipation era. And there was no mention of her in her book either. Maybe she wasn't the most prolific manager but she did get her through Butterfly, Rainbow both successful. She stuck by her through Glitter and helped her rebound during Charmbracelet. I always am curious about the story there.

Predictions (102,631)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
If I was to wager a guess, I'd say that she's fallen out of love with the business. Look Rihanna doesn't even release music anymore. Everything has changed. Mariah isn't just a business-woman, she's a business. And the best business for her going forward is Christmas. And only Christmas. When she signed with Epic it was because her friend LA Reid was heading the label. He was fired in 2017 and she still had to eventually get an album out as per contract. So she did one in less than a year. I do think she didn't see eye to eye with the new bosses there and something defiantly happened during the rollout of Caution. The Rarities was self released. The best thing that could've happened with returning to Sony was the 25th Anniversary of Merry Christmas and getting AIWFCIY to #1 and that job was done perfectly. As for Roc Nation? Anyone's guess is as good as mine. There was a report that she and Jay had a fight which she promptly rebutted. But sometimes with Mariah where there's smoke there's fire so maybe the whole rollout with Caution left a bad taste in her mouth. One thing we do know, since Glitter, we've learned that Mariah does not like to fail with an album. It's important to her to succeed. Unfortunately Caution underperformed so now she pretends like doesn't exist. It has joined Glitter, and she has distanced herself from anyone involved in the perceived failure. I agree that she needs to get back with musicians like Babyface who can inspire. And just create music. Do the thing she used to do before the pressure of fame was too much. On a side note, I do think it's always been about money for Mariah. Even in the beginning when she was all about getting a record deal, she shopped around many labels to get the best deal. She's always thought of the money, especially during 2001 with Virgin records and again in 2013 with American Idol. Right now there's no money in music, so my prediction is that we won't be hearing from her for a while.

Predictions (102,629)
by Robert-Anthony from United States
| |

So T, do you think MC's need for time and space can be contributed to how she characterizes record labels and high profile management companies as the corporate morgue? What happened between MC and Epic with the rollout of Caution? Did something go terribly wrong with trying to secure Cardi B for thr A No No remix? Why did she suddenly leave Roc Nation to sign with Range Media. Why is she now in 2023 without a record label? Someone pissed MC off and has caused this need for time and space. This need is unusual for a MC who would record a new record every two years. I know she has gotten older, but it just seems like someone has caused this downward turn in MC's career. She needs Babyface to come rescue her like he did Toni Braxton. I hope that she is happy and is just waiting for the right time for her third comeback.

No word on another Rarities. It would be nice but we don't even know if there are enough finished/polished songs to make up a whole album. I for one think Rarities albums are a great idea because there is no pressure for sales or any real expectations. It's strictly for the fans and keeps the lambily active until she does get the inspiration to record again. But then again, Mariah herself never said there would be a sequel and maybe it was a one off to coincide her book. Sort of a track listing to some of the songs she mentions in her memoir. If I could wish something into existence I would want a Remixes II and a Rarities II.

None of these predictions will happen. At least not this year. Her close friend and lamb correspondent already confirmed on Twitter that no SUD and no Butterfly Lounge this year. She also noted that Mariah is a human being who needs time and space and cannot just snap her fingers and produce an album. So she urged patience. I only bring this bad news so to temper expectations. There are no new Mariah songs this years.

Predictions (102,619)
by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
| |
|
|
I have a feeling that we will get some interesting projects released by Mariah this year.
I've a hunch that she has been in the studio with Beyonce. My intuition is that Act II may be an inspirational album, maybe with covers of classics in the culture. If so maybe AYNAF (alternatively this will appear on TBL). Unless Mariah hopped on a remix of Plastic Off The Sofa or Virgo's Groove.
And I heard a rumour that Mariah has something coming out with SZA. Did she hop on Blind maybe? Or is this another song for the Lounge?
SUD is coming this year too. I hope she includes some features on this project with like Willow Smith or someone else that has a fresh alternative style.
And maybe we will see Mariah and Ariana together on Honey this year. I hope The Butterfly Lounge is the project that carries us into the Rarities 2 and jazz album. This next couple of years will hold several "eras" I hope.

Legacy (102,609)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
I think there are two things at play. One, is her voice is not there to record a whole album without being bashed that it sounds too chipmunky with the technology used to prop it up. The second is that for whatever reason (maybe reason number one) is that no label wants to sign her for the money she wants. Some of the biggest career missteps after TEOM that could have helped preserve her superstar status would've been releasing Migrate, and also promoting MOAIA to its full potential. So many cancelled business dealings like VH1 Storytellers etc during that era. Her Idol experience and the album that she was clearly forced to make by Island/Def Jam and Barry Weiss at the time were a mess. Very unprofessional. Just by correcting those three little things would've totally changed the game for her right now. Record Labels are very weary right now about signing people to big money. Mariah isn't the most reliable or bankable artist if it's not AIWFCIY related. As a fan I would love one more full length album. I don't think we will see that until at least 2025 to be honest. Writing has always been her cathartic release, I guess she got that when she wrote the book. Now there is no need at the moment. The artist that used to write because she loved it has turned more into a business women who writes when the money is there. If anything, can't she do her fans one more thing and at least finish the MC30 that she started by putting HateU remix and others on streaming?

Legacy (102,605)
by Randy from USA

One of the things that bother me with the newer fans, delusionals and yass queens is the over celebration of AIWFCIY. A few years ago the older Stans were on here arguing what MC's signature song was. We tentatively settled on Hero. But now it's clear what she's going to be known for if this yearly record keeps happening. I think that the noise around that song fades away some of the most amazing singer songwriter compositions ever recorded. Mariah Carey is more than some relic you drag out of the closet and dust off on November 1st. Another damaging thing that the newer fans, delusionals and yass queens celebrate is her whistle register. Yes it is lovely. But that register doesn't make a great singer. I remember in the promotion for Emotions she said she didn't use it more on the track because she didn't want it to become a gimmick. She laid off it quite a bit on Music Box and Daydream but when the voice changed around #1s it was on full display for Rainbow. I think it's a crutch used to prove she can still sing. But if you have lost your belting register, are you gonna whistle your next albums? I just worry that Mariah's career is in a bleak spot and people are shining spotlights on things that narrow her legacy to a whistling Christmas act. Thoughts?

Maybe an EP or a Maxi Single? (102,597)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
I think at one point Mariah questioned if she should release these niche projects (like the duets, inspirational Butterfly Lounge) or if she should start working on an actual new commercial studio album. Maybe she changed gears and is starting to write MC16. Or maybe like many speculate she has lost her voice and is not doing anything music wise anymore. I actually wouldn't mind if she ended on the high that was Caution. Too bad more people didn't buy/stream it. Then again, if they didn't buy her in 2018 what makes us think the would in 2023? If Caution is the last full album at least I'm grateful that it was quality.

Maybe an EP or a Maxi Single? (102,595)
by Randy from USA

I do agree that MC is going to lose fans if she doesn't release an album soon, however, I don't know if releasing a studio album is profitable for her anymore. I'm noticing that Cardi B hasn't released her second album. Many other acts wait a long time between albums. We got spoiled by the 90s. Maybe MC could give as an EP or a maxi-single with different versions like I Still Believe or My All/Stay Awhile. It would have to be a killer single though not an Infinity or I Don't.

It's been all but confirmed by some Mariah insiders on Twitter that she does not have the rumored projects coming this year that everyone thought. Not even the Butterfly Lounge. Will the real MC please stand up (102,424)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
I think both Mariah and MC are the real Ms. Carey. Obviously she was more focused at the beginning of her career but she also had something to prove. She was also handled in a certain way. I remember at the beginning she was only allowed to go on talk shows to sing, not talk. Because I think the machine was hiding the fact that she has anxiety but also were scared of her immature qualities to shine through. Her eternally 12 self. Now it's all her all the time. She lost the sweet innocent quality but that will happen after being jaded for 33 years now. Prisoner and Up Out My Face are not that different. The co-producer certainly has an impact on each song. Also, with the changes in her voice she had to compensate, it was also around the time that popular music was Britney, Christina, Spice Girls and Madonna. So a change was needed. She briefly returned to the old Mariah with Charmbracelet in 2002 but didn't have the voice on the record to back it up. The writing was top notch however. After the emancipation there was no going back. I think there are many sides to Mariah and all of them are real for her.

Album delay (102,423)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
Does anyone else get the feeling that all these projects in the works that never see the light of day is really because she's stalling? I wonder if her voice is too far gone? Back in the 90's Mariah could bang out an album every year. Or could it be that she is scared of the commercial performance which is freezing her from putting anything out? She's been talking about the same three projects now for three years since 2020, and it's obvious nothing is coming this year. So that means it will be four years since we first heard about SUD or TBL. And next year will be six years since her last studio album. I personally don't mind if Caution is her last album, as it is that good, knowing full well that her next real studio album will probably be her last.

The duets album is finally upon us (102,265)
by T from USA

I found this article entitled: Mariah Carey re-signs with Epic after 15 years away from eight years ago in 2015 when went back to Sony and LA Reid and interestingly enough the first project talked about was an updated greatest hits re-done in a form of a duets album. Now we know LA Reid didn't get his way back then and he ultimately was fired and she released a new studio album, but now that she's working with him again it seems like the duets, redo of her greatest hits may actually be happening in the form of the Butterfly Lounge. We already heard Close My Eyes 2020, WBT 2021, and The Roof with Brandy 2022.

SuperBowl Halftime Show (102,217)
by T from USA

Mariah could do it with the right amount of imagination. Stadium goes completely black, then the flood lights, then a light sprinkling of artificial snow as the opening chords of AIWFCIY starts. Interrupted by a loud "it's time" which leads right into ODB's Fantasy remix intro. Can splice up Obsessed, I Know What You Want, Honey, and It's Like That. Do a little ABMB and WBT and end with either Hero or a hologram of Whitney where she duets on When You Believe. It would be epic. Done right it would showcase her catalogue but also how Iconic she is. Outfit: no dresses, just her black pants and top she had for the Daydream album cover. Slip on a faux fur coat for a song or two but keep it simple. Maybe come out with a Santa hat at the beginning before whipping it off, as a melting metaphor.

Mariah with UMG (102,199)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
I've been saying for a while that Mariah should sign back up with Universal and continue her legacy from Charmbracelet to MIAMTEC. She's done everything she can do with Sony at this point, including securing AIWFCIY as her 19th #1 hit. This would be a chance for her to work her other albums properly. Also without a major label there will be no appetite for a new album unfortunately. Labels have A&R people who link her up with great songs and producers. (Think #Beautiful with Miguel.) Without a label she has to do all the reaching out and all the paying for it herself. I just can't see that happening. Maybe a whole album with JD and Daniel Moore, but that's about it. A&R departments have their ears to the streets and know what's up.

Mariah back with IDJ (102,143)
by T from USA

|
Now that Mariah is no longer with a record label how would everyone feel if she re-signed with Island Def Jam records? I mean she went back to Sony in 2015 and for the five years that followed until 2020 Rarities she used her former label to build on her legacy with the company. Whilst still releasing one new album, Caution. Could she possibly do that now with IDJ? Use the next five years to build on her Island discography and give us one new album along the way. She could start with a MOAIA re-release now that It's a Wrap is blowing up. Tack on Drake to the track and release the album with the HATEU remix plus Skydiving. Then continue with #MC30. This would be a great route for her and give her some much needed direction right now. I'd take IDJ over Epic anyway.

He sold his share of rights and then the next year Mariah started to ramp up the promotion like never before. It even went to #1 in 2019. I think she was pleased that he wasn't going to make a dime off the success so she really went into overdrive. Before that she would be working her butt off and making him rich in the process. Just like during the concert she mentions Marc Shaiman for CTIITAA but not Walter for her biggest hit AIWFCIY.

For those who don't know, Walter sold his rights to a company named Hipgnosis a couple of years back. Meaning that he was paid loads of money, one off, and that's it. All other annual earnings or royalties would go to the company and Mariah. From what I've read, other singers like Justin Timberlake, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen also sold all their catalogues. I hope Mariah would hold dear all her catalogues and soon pass it down to her children.
