Best Love Takes Time performance (104,617)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |

Just [beautiful], great seeing Mariah at the very beginning, hungry to prove herself as a legit singer and an [artist]. Makes me smile to notice the insecurities of "good side, bad side" weren't here yet, she's also not trying to be "pretty" while singing, she's just singing, immersed in the song, its performance and relaying the feel and its message of the song to the audience. Clips [like] this make me wonder, does she look back at her younger self and acknowledge fame did change her and sometimes not for the better? "I'm the same Mimi, fame ain't changed me." Hmmn.

I disagree. Even with the lack of resonant belts and some imperfections, she really went there vocally and took some risks. She started to dive into the other parts of her voice to sing the song. I love all the passion she poured into this performance. One of my favorites. Shakiness and all. Here is the full Love Takes Time performance that night.

Obsessed in the UK (104,595)

For me ILT was pure fire and a powerful start to what we now know was a definitive [record] and [era] in her whole career. I always say the stars [aligned] just for Mariah in 2005, but she also hit the ground running with that January release. Then came the song of her career "We Belong Together". Everything about "The Emancipation Of Mimi" was well planned, well executed and came out better than expected. I hope just one last time she can recreate an era as successful as that time, if anything for the new generation of Lambs.

Stacey, just ask yourself if Say Somethin' could have paved the way for WBT in the same way? ILT was the party record that TEOM needed as the lead single. It said that Mariah Carey was back. A January release date and a delayed video caused it to stall at number 16.

It's funny how Mariah made Christmas cool and now everyone wants in on the moment, but clearly she's the only one who's genuine about her love for the holidays. It would be crazy if for some strange reason, another song in her holiday canon suddenly gains steam and hits number 1. This would mean a tie with The Beatles. . I see it happening for "Oh Santa" down the road.

For the life of me, I don't know why you guys keep entertaining this clown. It's best to just ignore it and maybe it will go away one day. Anyone else in the UK that can splash it with some holy water? I don't read its posts, much less reply to it. It's desperate for attention and y'all keep falling for it. That aside, have a great weekend everyone and congratulations to Brenda Lee.

Vocals getting better (104,439)
by Terna from Nigeria
| |
|

I think with the recent voice issues, she's begun to get more serious than in the past where those opinions stem from. As a singer, you can't afford to not acknowledge your voice needs absolute care and attention and I think she gets it now. Constant singing is also exercise for the voice especially if she's resting well afterwards. She's gotten much better than that first show in terms of tone and flexibility, the ease of singing is also coming back hence the absence of staccato. I do hope it gets even better.

Mariah isn't fastidious about exercising her voice. Regimented vocal exercise is considered bleak. She starts the first show dry and then as shows continue, she warms up. She recorded much of TEOM after the Charmbracelet tour as she said it left her voice in a good place. As a teenager, she respected opera but it was too restrictive, confining. She wanted to be freer with her voice.

AIWFCIY was demoted on several Christmas playlists on Spotify, where it used to be in the top positions (some fans noticed that some playlists even removed the song). Boycott? RATCT was elevated on Spotify playlists, perhaps with help from the record label, which is why it's getting more plays than AIWFCIY. It's a question of position in the playlist. The higher it is, the more it will be played.

You're not about to school me on Aretha Franklin. First of all not every song or performance she had was Gospel influenced (most weren't) just because her roots were in gospel and she started in church that's implying singers such as she was (Whitney too comes to mind) are kinda a one trick pony, just because their roots are in Gospel. That woman was one of the most versatile singers that would ever walk the face of this Earth - case in point, "Nessum Dorma" 1998, the Grammy Awards. We have streaming services in this day and age for you to do your research and don't come here making a fool of yourself.

Everything Aretha performed was gospel-influenced because she grew up ensconced in the African-American gospel tradition. She was, I will remind you, the daughter of a prominent minister. "Soul" music would not exist without gospel, blues, rock and jazz. It is a hybrid genre like pop.
You posted tons of strong opinions about "Emotions" as an album. Now others are responding. If you can't handle it, don't post lol.

Billboard will publish the new chart on Monday, but tomorrow we'll know for sure. Brenda is ahead on Spotify but Apple Music is bigger on this side of the pond, and Mariah is ahead on that one. Mariah is also bigger in sales. It's kind of weird, when Mariah re-entered the chart at 17, Brenda was just bubbling under the Hot 100, then she re-entered at 8 and Mariah jumped to number 4. Judging by the pattern, Brenda is gathering steam way faster. I guess we lost this one. Congrats to Brenda.

You lost me at "If It's Over" as filler. This is one of the best songs in her catalogue. Aretha did plenty of dark gospel-style breakup songs, see "Chain of Fools", "Think", etc. What a silly criticism of an excellent song.

Let's count the fillers on "Emotions" shall we? 1. "And you don't Remember" - I rarely play this song, it just isn't strong enough and is indeed one of her weaker ballads with a high note thrown in just because. 2. "So Blessed" - I personally love this song, but I also recognize it ain't no classic and quite forgettable. Even Mariah herself was like "oh please which so blessed" when the lambs made her pick an absolute favorite in a versus format a few years back. 3. "You're So Cold" - Oh my, what a waste of space a better song would've occupied and it was 5 whole minutes long, hideous. Skipped every single time. 4. "If it's Over" - Another weak ballad with a high note thrown in. This song actually is sort of disjointed, as its feel doesn't match the lyrics. It is a breakup song that sounds Gospel. With the gospel sound, one expects to hear an uplifting lyric or inspiring one, but this is dark. She got it right with "I am free" and "Anytime you need a friend". This record was also kinda what turned the general public off her high notes because the placements came across as "just because", and with such a display on the title track, the rest should've had it toned way down in the background like on "Can't Let Go". The saving grace for this album are her vocals which are top notch capturing just how powerful her instrument is.

I would 1000% agree with all saying that Emotions is the superior album, far and away. The debut sounds so dated in 2023, where as Emotions has a pure timelessness to it, plus one of Mariah's more unique album art (meaning not just a close up of her face, or in a power stance).

"The numbers never lie"? Do you mean sales equate quality? That's a dangerous path to walk when talking Mariah Carey albums. Is every album that sold more than Butterfly better than it? Many will agree, but a great many will disagree. I will say this, an as example: E=MC2 is definitely a better record than The Emancipation of Mimi, despite selling far less.
What, then, if you had to select three post-1997 ballads to be sung to Mariah in tribute at an awards show would you and others select? They need to be well-known and within the capability of the artists selected to sing them.

I'll just say this, between those two records, one is on the cusp of being certified Diamond - her third if I might add, while the other still has a long way to go (the numbers never lie). There's a reason why "Vision of Love" and "Love Takes Time" were the songs chosen for the tribute - they are instantly recognizable classics (even in that time), that have stood the test of time, the kind of songs seasoned songwriters would kill to have to their credit, written by a then 19 year old a testament in itself and can only be found on the most stellar debut ever by an artist - Mariah Carey.

""Emotions" was also a near sophomore slump that just wasn't as strong as the first record, neither were the tunes even as memorable like the debut."
I must differ, also. But go with me here, you may be surprised how this ends. "Emotions", the album, is superior to "Mariah Carey", its predecessor. The former has 80's-hangover style production, far less sophisticated lyrics, and basic tunes on half the record. The latter has the title track, Can't Let Go, Make It Happen, So Blessed and the majestic Till The End of Time - it is, in every aspect, superior. "Mariah Carey" had to have a great ballad shoe-horned onto the end of it to make it better. It is thus far the only MC album I have never owned.
However, everything else in your post is *cough* spot on. The singing style, too-clever melodies and over-production is old hat. It makes it very difficult for songs to be sung in karaoke or in tribute.
It is slightly frustrating that in tribute to Mariah she - and we - had to listen to Vision of Love and Love Takes Time. She has written over one hundred songs since then. But what successful ones can be reproduced? I think we all need and want to move past the pre-No.1's catalogue, right?
Chest voice not head voice. Semi-tone keychange not octave keychange. Simple structure chord progression not complicated altered second verse with no middle eight chord progression. Meaningful Universal lyrics not Fritos kitchen window lyrics. On trend producers not, well, Jermaine Dupri.

I beg to differ, I don't need her trying to revisit an old formula, "Emotions" was also a near sophomore slump that just wasn't as strong as the first record, neither were the tunes even as memorable like the debut. Mariah is talented enough and creative enough to come up with something fresh, music genres out her comfort zone and especially working with newer producers who have their fingers on the current pulse of music and where it's going, for a fresh sound. Secondly her singing style is dated, too decorated she needs to tone down the girlie "curliecues" and sing straight, mainly with her chest voice, for balance and contrast, so that when she does falsett, it is a breath of fresh air (she did this with great pleasant effect in the late 90's), it just got over bearing from the Charmbracelet era, was too much and very off putting. Her vocal delivery has to be spot on for this new album. I do agree that she needs a return to adult contemporary ballads but sung in her range - "Through the Rain" suffered from this - a beautiful ballad, a very memorable melody but sung too high that the audience cannot sing along. (This is why Adele works so well.) Finally, a change of hair colour or return to her brunette curls - the former would be preferred. Get that tired blonde color retired at least for an era, it ages you 15 minutes.

Your ears have aged a tad bit now haven't they? The clip I posted, I clearly acknowledged Mariah is having some form of vocal issues, that covers the fact I know she prerecorded some parts. I just didn't want to dwell on that, unlike your toxic self that thrives in such as we can see from this post. What I was pointing out were the non Christmas songs medley she pulled out and sang live and still killed it voice problems and all. Try and be a better person. Smh. Like every other obstacle Mariah's faced and overcame which we have been witness to, this voice issue too will be a thing of the past very soon and she will blow once more like we know she can.

It isn't the lip-syncing that bothers me about the Billboard performance or the Christmas shows. You would have to be delusional with a capital Terna not to have expected there to be lipsync. And, having a PhD in Mariah Carey Lip-Sync, I was quite impressed as I had to replay certain parts to really understand if they were lip-sync or not. (They were.) But the songs sound okay from what I have watched and if people are having a ball in the auditoria then good for them.
What's truly puzzling at best (and truly worrisome at worst) is Mariah's rigidity. She rarely moves. More's the point: she rarely moves to an almost inhuman degree. It was even so on the Jennifer Hudson show. I neither see nor know of *any* artist who is so frozen in expression and in movement. I don't even know of any *person* in real life who behaves so. Does anyone? It's really weird, you guys. Something is not right, here. In fact, I would go so far as to say: something is very wrong here.
One of the things I loved that Mariah lost was her command of the stage and ability to entertain. She would run up and down the bloody thing, punch the invisible ghosts, slap them in the face many times when going for big notes, activate the garage doors by pressing the secret button in her ear, spin around, laugh, dance, point to people and tell them she sees them up there in the cheap seats, get excited when she can read some of the signs (do people still do signs?) and so on. Where did this go? And why?
I don't think anyone is asking for 90s vocals. But I think they're sure as shit asking for 90s performances. And quite rightly so. They were bloody good fun.

Yeah she's a little bit low energy, but she pulled out songs she hasn't sung in almost 10 years and killed it and she's singing live. Mariah is going through real vocal issues and I wish the fans would be a little bit more understanding. She obviously has taken our advice and seen some form of voice therapist and or coach because she sounds much better than she did this time last year and even all the way back to the pandemic year. I hope she gets even better.

What happened to Brandy's voice? (104,063)
by Terna from Nigeria

We always like to ask that in Mariah's case, but what about Brandy? What happened to that agile, pristine, silvery color-filled voice she used to have? Especially on "Never Say Never". Honestly in terms of vocal tone, she was up there with Whitney and Mariah, so pleasant to the ears. Her version of "Everything I do (I do it for you)" floored me, literally chills every time I play that song. Now she's (for a lack of words to describe it) monochrome and bland. Her new Christmas album is a total snooze fest. Ugh.
