Until Mariah's book comes out and she slams Whitney in regards to the Oscar performance, I'm maintaining my view that this so-called embarrassing shady performance is nothing more than fabricated nonsense. I have just watched it, having seen it many times, and no, Whitney didn't sing any of Mariah's lines. That's a fact. If I'm wrong, point out to me the time in the performance where she does this.
If people are het up over the bridge and the "resilient voice" line, well, that was Whitney's part in the original recording so Mariah did the right thing to stop singing and let Whitney have that part. She looks across and smiles in what I perceive to be a smile of acknowledgement and good nature and appreciation.
We can't help the fact Whitney naturally had more volume than Mariah when singing. She's always been a belter. Blame the sound engineer for not doing the levels correctly on their microphones.

Re: What will Mariah be remembered for? (94,396) (94,399)
by Bill from the UK

Hard to say when she hopefully has many, many years ahead of her to keep adding to her huge list of accomplishments.
AIWFCIY is of course her lasting legacy in terms of perennial popularity, and rightly so. But she also pioneered an entire genre with the Fantasy remix, arguably the most important recording of her career. As well as that, she ushered in a whole new melismatic singing style for the next generation with Vision of Love.
I also think Hero will be an airplay mainstay on adult contemporary stations for as long as radio remains around.
I really don't think a song as universally lauded as AIWFCIY is a bad thing to be remembered for. I could write a thesis about that song, and I'm sure someone will at some point. It really is a perfect song.

I've never been that enamored with Honey. It's okay, but always been a bit mediocre and I group it with Babydoll in terms of Butterfly tracks and what I could live without. At first listen I was massively underwhelmed, especially following the perfection of Daydream. I think it's one of her worst-sung songs, very nasally and raspy and disjointed. The video is better than the song by miles. Touch My Body was fun and unique and a little bit different from the norm. I loved the video, and still do. I get where Honey sits in terms of it being the launching pad for New Mariah, and why so many love it, but it was as if Classic Mariah was killed off with a dull, rusty, blunt blade.

Emotions LP (94,381)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
So after five years of saving, I was finally able to purchase a Technics turntable, which I have been after for years. Lots of sideswipes along the way with emergency bills and whatnot, but it's with me now. I enjoy the "experience" of vinyl. The nice big artwork, the lyric sheets, the fact you have to pay attention to it etc., and often thought went into how each side opened and closed etc.
I've been spinning Mariah's albums on it, through a very good hi-fi system I have (Ruark R5), and I must say, there is definitely something to vinyl sounding "better", in spite of the pops and clicks. I cleaned all her records with special formula and special wipes to clear out the dust in the grooves, and they honestly sound brilliant.
The Emotions album in particular, sounds wonderful. The best I've ever heard it. The output into the hi-fi system, using the Technics turntable, it sounds beautiful. I have had this album since the 90s and, although I have always enjoyed it and have listened to it thousands of times, I heard new things this time round. There are so many percussion lines on To Be Around You, Til the End of Time is like an experience all by itself, and there is do much going on in Can't Let Go and the other ballads.
Same goes for the debut, Alone In Love was like a whole new experience, could clearly hear the whistle that's buried way in the mix at the climax as well. Fantastic. I'm so pleased and it was worth the five year wait lol.

This was lovely. I'm unsure if it was the lighting or the lack of being able to have her hair done, but Mariah's hair seemed to have a tint of grey to it? Did anyone else think that? I love grey hair so much, and I must say, Mariah would look incredible with it. What a great image that would be, so graceful and elegant. But might have been the lighting so I may be getting ahead of myself. I also liked the fact she had a pic of her and Nick on the shelf.

Indeed. For if there is anyone out there like me who would rather use this message board as an escape from current events and instead talk about boring Mariah stuff, I present to you:
My favourite underrated remixes. I love many of Mariah's remixes, especially the re-sung ones. She's done so many, often some really good ones get forgotten in the wake of the juggernauts like Dreamlover Def Club, Fantasy with ODB and Heartbreaker/Lonely.
1. Dreamlover (Bam Jam Soul) 2. Never Forget You (Extended Mix) 3. Anytime You Need a Friend (Soul Convention Remix) 4. Joy to the World (Celebration Mix) 5. Fantasy (Sweet Dub Mix) 6. One Sweet Day (Chucky's Remix) 7. Underneath the Stars (Drifting Remix) 8. Butterfly (Classic Bossa Nova) 9. Do You Know Where You're Going to (Mahogany Club Mix) 10. Loverboy (Dreamy Club of Love)

I know TGTBAW often gets overlooked, and at times mocked for its production etc., but it's incredible and shocking, how 30 years/a generation after it was written, we still find ourselves in the same world.

Ah, I just can't win with you can I? Haha. Thanks though for giving it another shot. I would ask you "which other song would you like me to suggest" before remembering your pile of disliked tracks is enormous hah. I seem to recall The Roof being discussed previously which I think you didn't take to. I can't comprehend that. It's the best track on Butterfly, and one of her best tracks, period. The video, the sample, the soft vocals, the layers, the lyrics, the atmosphere. One of the greatest compositions she's ever done.

Why articles of this nature, as well as all the rubbish from Gossip Cop is even regurgitated here is beyond me. It's not news at all. If people want to purchase an album to support an artist they like and ride the crest of an exciting wave, what's it to them? It's their money. To call them out for not donating to a Covid cause or charity is exceptionally low.
