Everything Fades Away (Remix) (94,188)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
A fan made remix of Everything Fades Away. For those of you that, for unknown reasons, cannot get into the magic and the enigma of this song, maybe this Caution-esque update will help.

Not sure what people believe in this world, but on Martyn's anniversary, Glitter becomes available for us all to stream.

So this was why Mariah's Twitter was all glittered up and she changed her name to Billie Frank? Brilliant. I will be playing this all day long. Such a fun album.

Nice article with some great performances, but no If It's Over from either the Grammy's or SNL? She's never sung better in all her life.

The video did get nearly 20 million YouTube views at the time though, so it appealed to people on some level. But yes. It's not exactly up there with The Roof and Breakdown is it? I also agree, I Don't could have easily found a place on Caution. Part of me wishes it had.

Re: The debut era (94,119) (94,120)

I Don't Wanna Cry was the intended second single according to an old press release I have. It then got pushed back to after Someday as Tommy said in his book he wanted an up-tempo track for the third single after two ballads. He writes it was always the plan to launch her with two ballads (unconventional at the time), but Love Takes Time was considered the better song when it materialised. As for There's Got to Be a Way, that was the fourth single across Europe instead of I Don't Wanna Cry. I agree, the remixes for that song were her worst, although they did contain some unused vocals that didn't appear on the album version, so they aren't a complete write off.

Great article, thanks for sharing it. I more or less agree with the ranking, especially pleased to see Emotions get the acknowledgment it deserves. One paragraph did floor me a bit: "Luckily, it still exists as it was conceived, complete with Mariah’s unapologetic deployment of her powerful instrument, and free of the reproach of the same critics who would, in just a few years’ time, lament its inevitable deterioration." So true, and so sad.

Yes, Happy anniversary to the first and fairest of them all. What an introduction. There wasn't any doubt that she would go on to conquer the world. To think of the impact Mariah has had on my life is almost too much to comprehend.

Re: Loverboy Firecracker (94,038) (94,067)
by Bill from the UK

It's hard to judge on the fan made remix provided if Loverboy would have been better with the Firecracker or Candy sample. Mariah said she had to go in and completely re-sing her vocals to fit to Candy, so melodically it may have been completely different originally, and was more than likely sung at a different BPM. The reason it doesn't seem to work is because you're shoe horning together two tracks that don't marry up.

Haha it's definitely "gotta have another taste". My most stupid misheard lyric was when I heard Miss You Most (at Christmas Time). I only had the cassette single of AIWFCIY so didn't have the lyrics. In the bridge, where she sings of the seasons, I thought "with the April rain" was "with the egg parade", which I took to be some US reference to Easter lol.

Re: Did Mariah have an affair? (94,032) (94,041)

I listened to Lullaby again this morning and there's another line I didn't pick up before, "I still melt away", that might also reference the epic Daydream cut. Also interesting take that she may be referencing someone pre-Tommy. You do read things from time to time about her being forced to break up with a boyfriend when she signed her deal, and also the rumour her and Ben Margulies were romantically involved at the time. Whoever this man is, if he was real and not just a songwriter's muse, they were still in touch for years afterwards.

Did Mariah have an affair? (94,029)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
There seems to be a discrepancy between Mariah's divorce from Tommy (1998), their separation (1997), and her liaisons with gentleman callers at the time. So the question is, 1) do I really wanna trust this feeling 2) do I wanna let it pass me by. Oops, tangent, sorry. The question is, did Mariah have an affair whilst she was still married to Tommy?
The song Lullaby is quite revealing when it speaks about "that night on the roof" and kissing "under the sky". A reference to The Roof clearly, and possibly Fourth of July/Underneath the Stars. And those songs were likely written and recorded in 1996 in order to have found their way onto a 1997 album. Pre-separation as far as the public are aware. I do often feel Mariah's songs have deeper, more personal meanings that she may let on. She's a songwriter, and most will write from experience. The whole Daydream album eludes to either a past love that no longer exists, or longing to be loved. Mariah said she felt like her life at that time was as if she was in a daydream.
Even as far back as Music Box. Dreamlover, come and rescue me. From what? A marriage you felt obliged to head into? Just to hold you once again. Who? He wasn't a lover, nor a friend. She would give her all to have him there. The same all she would give years later on the Butterfly album? Was she the perfect figurine trapped in the music box that was allowed out every so often to sing a pretty tune, or was it just "a cool title" as she said.
Bring on the memoirs.

I can't tell you how many times I have played the YouTube videos. Praise the Lord for the bootleggers of old. I hope MC releases the entire concert series for Daydream's anniversary one of these days. But you can try Andrew, but you can't take that away from me (inaudible mumbling and humming in the background).
And also, the concert was filmed. There were tripods set up at the front with cameras on them and photographers present. Every concert by big artists is filmed and recorded for posterity.

Y'all are just jealous that I was at the best concert she ever gave. Never will she sing like that ever again. And I was in that room. And like a fine wine the memories only get better with age. No thanks, I'll never trade that experience.

Hmmm not sure about that. Daydream era vs CB era. Were you not just saying that whole album needs to be forgotten and buried in the past? You got one song and a finger wag, I got prime Mariah all night long in what is arguably the best concert she ever gave so. Nope.

Agree that it's not the best representation of Mariah's sound overall, I'd say either the coveted holy trinity of Daydream, Butterfly or Emancipation capture that. However, I do think Music Box had some of her best remixes and b sides. Do You Think of Me is astonishing, Everything Fades Away is probably her best closing track, and the Def Club Mix of Dreamlover (pioneering the re-sung vocals for remixes movement) and the Anytime You Need a Friend C&C Club Mix, with Mariah scatting at the end, are phenomenal.

Hmmm. I'd rather it didn't. If the cut and paste "duets" on Me I Am Mariah were an indication of the quality I'd rather they stay buried in the vault. These "justice for" campaigns are getting a bit out of hand now. Glitter, fine. E=MC2 was a global hit album around the world, with her highest selling first week sales ever, and a number one in the USA. Why does that need justice? I would rather see the demo tape released, rather than AA. But who am I?
