Beautifully sung, I agree, but it's impossible to choose Mariah's overall best vocal performance.

It's nice to sing to but I wouldn't say joyful, it's a very sad lyric, especially "I should have said I loved you, why didn't I just tell you?" That line resonates with me as I wish I had told someone I loved them before they died.

That is the best bit of the song, but I also extend that run to include the "no no no" build up she does in time with the best afterwards. The second best part is "I'll never leave you behiiiiii-iiiiiiiiiiiiii-iiiiaaaaeeeeiiiinnndddd".

Lately I can't stop playing Never Forget You. Her ad libs on the last choruses are amazing, and her voice blends perfectly with Babyface's. Very underrated song, one of the best from Music Box.

Joss Stone already used that title about twenty years ago. I always loved the rumoured E=MC2 title, "Sweet Soul Odyssey".

Haha is that the same person as Jeremimi? I swear, I nearly died when I heard their rendition of Dreamlover.
On the crescendo note at 3:36 it sounds like a bunch of cats haha.

And you know it's funny you mention European tours in your previous post. I actually was an attendee at the London leg of the Daydream tour. One of the best nights of my entire life. I've held my tongue far too long about attending, it's time everyone knew. The duration of the concert, it felt like I was dreaming. But I wasn't sleeping.

Haha, Right to Dream's inclusion was more to ensure at least 1 ticket sale in Randy's area. As for GTFO, sonically it is one of the best things she has ever done. Lyrically it is one of the worst. Unforgettable has the same sort of mood but with a better lyric in my opinion.

I've heard it get dismissed, but for me that song just oozes summer. It's so light and vibrant, like an edgier Dreamlover. It's without a doubt my second favourite after To The Floor. But it seems my tastes are in the reverse to the majority, as the singles I can sort of take or leave, but the album cuts I think are way better. Mine Again, One and Only, Fly Like a Bird, Circles, I Wish You Knew, Joyride are all divine. I even prefer the bonus tracks, except Sprung with that weird Halloween music lol.

Well, it's no Thanksgiving or Daydream tour performance (specifically the London performance, of which I was an attendee), but it's an awful lot better than some of the ropey performances she's done recently on tours. Also, Licia, yes to Your Girl. Great song and her snippet of that was also good. I remember when I got TEOM I played Your Girl continuously, I was in love with it. Then I discovered the subtle greatness of To The Floor, and that became my fave.

I was knocking the sequencing of the album, more the fact that so many people on here proclaimed Caution to be a "cohesive body of work" that it became somewhat of a joke phrase, only for Mariah to then use it herself in that statement.
I think the album flows perfectly. As for the placement of Don't Forget About Us, I'd have it as the penultimate track, before Fly Like a Bird. That way, DFAU and WBT sort of bookend the album.

"We spent a long time working on the sequence for the album - listening to it and just really putting it together as a body of work, as a cohesive piece of music that almost feels like it was one song."
Anyone else laugh out loud when reading this statement?

Agree, really good. Mariah seems so much at ease and much more confident at home in her studio than on stage with a malfunctioning bejewelled ear piece. She should totally do some sort of indoor concert, she hasn't sounded this great in years. It's the debut's 30th soon. Please Mariah, drop something out of this world for us. The demo tape. I pray.

What's annoying about those videos is that all they do is have "E5" and "G2" flash up on the screen for like a nano second when one of her "eh" notes is yelled higher than normal. But yes, the videos should be titled "Mariah has still got it" or similar as you're completely right with how damaging it is to her reputation.

Lol, I think we were all waiting for Right to Dream to show up. You know it amazes me that someone who can write lyrics as beautiful as those you quoted, could also think "boy you're acting so corny like fritos" was worthy of writing, recording, and slapping on the end of an album of your most successful songs.
And to your point Randy, Butterfly didn't really go anywhere where it was released, unfortunately. Like you, I can't fathom it either. In the UK, Honey reached number 3, then Butterfly stalled at 22, and then My All went to number 4. Admittedly, she promoted the other two a lot more, but still. At that point in her career it was almost expected for all her releases to get into the top ten, so it was a bit of a surprise to see it falter, especially as it was a "trademark" Carey/Afanasieff affair.
I remember being so annoyed with Columbia during 1998, as week after week I would read that The Roof was being released, and I'd go to the record store every Monday to check the new releases, only to find nothing. And then the same happened with Breakdown. I remember thinking for a split second "Frozen" by Madonna was Breakdown, as the single artwork was of that sepia tone Mariah had for the Butterfly photoshoot. I think we waited about 9 months between Butterfly and My All. Madness.

Yeh I assumed it had to be released. I love both those songs as well. Every song she did with Ben Margulies had this innocence about them that I just loved. And I wish she'd wrote with Carole King again. If It's Over was brilliant, and those performances at the Grammy's and SNL are easily two of the best she has ever done.

My understanding is that the entire song was from the Butterfly sessions, meaning it was written and recorded back in 1997 with the rest of the album.

Good question, but how are we defining non-successful? For instance Love Takes Time was a number one in the US, but barely made the top 40 in the UK. But semantics aside, I would say in recent years it has been Unforgettable. I thought that song was modern and edgy, with a great subdued vocal delivery, in keeping with the mood of the song. From the olden days I'll go for The Roof. Limited release in Europe, barely dented the chart. But the lyrics, the atmosphere, the vocals, the imagery, and my gosh that video. One of the most sophisticated, elegant and moving songs from her catalogue.

Haha yes, I do it for so many of her songs. The main one for me is the "reaching for a dream" intro for Make It Happen, I recite it every time the album version appears. Even when listening to Can't Let Go I add in the "if you know it sing along" line from Unplugged, and yell out "sing" (exclamation mark) after "I'll be eternally grateful" line in Vision of Love from MSG. And at the end of Dreamlover I add a "how ya doin" from the Thanksgiving special. I actually wore the tape out of my Thanksgiving video so had to get a new one. Just a great production from start to finish. Whenever I order a takeaway pizza when the delivery person rings the bell I always say "pizza everybody" like MC did when she made two pizzas for like 500 people lol.
