Haha, he'd have retired by the time they collaborate. I don't see what the appeal is with him to be honest.

Ric Wake is British and produced There's Got to Be a Way, Someday, All In Your Mind and Prisoner from the debut album. He also co-wrote TGTBAW with Mariah, and three other songs at the time, but only the one made it onto the album. Steve Mac also produced the Westlife version of Against All Odds. There's probably others. But you're right, she predominantly sticks with US producers.

I loved #1s, especially the UK getting DYKWYGT as a bonus track. By better, I mean either a different, more meaningful song selection (not the same old hits we get on every compilation), and more than 4 and a half new songs.

I hope there is some sort of tie in with the release of the memoirs. Either an anniversary edition of the debut, or a compilation album (with new material accompanying classic hits, like a better version of #1s).

Superbowl set list (92,739)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Here's how things should go at the Superbowl:
The crowd dampens down as anticipation slowly builds. After a few moments, Mariah can be heard cooing "I really hope when you hear this song, that you're happy with someone else." The lights come on and Mariah bursts into a lipped rendition of the Rainbow classic Did I Do That?
With the crowd still jumping, she effortlessly segues into a lipped version of Charmbracelet's charm offensive Boy (I Need You).
Mariah is picked up by the shirtless backing dancers and plonked onto a chaise lounge where she is spun 180 degrees in the air. With her back to the audience, a helicopter descends and out comes Rick Ross. The pair perform their iconic duet Can't Say No before a wowed audience.
Mariah is lowered back to the floor and ambled into position to lip her Songwriter's Hall of Fame inductee, Infinity. The audience sing along to this popular and infectious smash hit, and then, lo, French Montana, Justin Bieber and TI emerge from the sidelines to grace the crowd with their career defining collaboration of Why You Mad?
The song is over, the lights lowered and, whilst fiddling incessantly with her ear piece, Mariah starts purring the opening to Infamous, and with Jussie Smollet in tow, brings the house down with their critically lauded duet.
Finally, in a nod to the past, Mariah barks out AIWFCIY (Tree Lighting Edition), and asks the crowd "Y'all know this one?"
At that, she spins on her heel and is wheeled off to the Butterfly Outro, barely heard above the rapturous crowd and deafening applause.
The performance is then released to the Billboard R&B Female Over 40 but Under 50 Bubbling Under Chart, where it reaches pole position instantly.

Come on now, glass houses and all that. Mariah's had lots of questionable outfits and performances in her time. Thankfully she seems back on track now, but look no further than the nightmare era for all the "receipts".

Agree. All the videos from Butterfly were amazing. They were sexy indeed, but, especially for Breakdown and The Roof, there was an understated elegance to them.

That's debatable. Her sales have never been at the level they were since she fully incorporated hip hop into her sound. Not that it's a bad thing.

Nice topic. For me some iconic shots of MC I love are the microphone pic from the debut album, the Rainbow album cover, and the Merry Christmas album cover and associated pictures from the shoot.

Re: Hidden song - Love Take Time (92,639) (92,640)
by Bill from the UK

Well the list Terna gave was "pregap" songs, these are songs a really before the first track on albums (where you need to rewind the first track on the disc to hear it). Regular hidden tracks appear after a gap following the final song. Love Takes Time was straight after Prisoner, so it was always intended to be on the album, but early promotional copies of the album either didn't feature it or didn't list it on the tracklisting, yet contained it on the disc. And yes, according to The First Vision, Mariah wrote Love Takes Time for Emotions, but Tommy et al thought it was too good to wait, as he felt the album needed more ballads.

The Remixes re-imagined (92,635)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Continuing my revised tracklisting series, I can't stay quiet any longer about The Remixes and how this was such a botched opportunity. On the surface, it was a no-brainer. A collection of Mariah's most successful and notorious club and urban remixes on a two disc compilation. In fairness, the collection started off well, but it always seemed as if the compiler gave up mid-way through the track selection on the second disc, and opted for a bunch of album tracks to fill up the disc space. Breakdown, Sweetheart and Crybaby had no place on the compilation. The only concession I would make is to include the "Mo' Thugs Remix" of Breakdown instead. Technically, Loverboy (Remix) and Heartbreaker (Remix) are found on previously released albums (and Fantasy with ODB, if we're counting #1's), but Heartbreaker and Fantasy are iconic enough to warrant being included. Miss You and I Know What You Want also appeared on re-issues of Charmbracelet.
There are some major omissions from the record. On disc one, I'd remove the boring paint-by-numbers Through the Rain remix and replace it with the Always Club Mix of Always Be My Baby. That was a huge oversight to not be included, and if it was due to its length, then they should have instead opted for the Def Classic Radio Version which cuts it in half.
As for the second disc. Wow, where do I start? Let me address the lack of I Still Believe (Pure Imagination Remix). Seriously, how could that have happened? It is one of the jewels in Mariah's remix crown. Also, to entice and treat the die hards, the only exclusive we received was the (not that great) So So Def Remix of The One. Where was the Drifting Remix of Underneath the Stars? Those Brazilian club mixes of Do You Know Where You're Going To and the Butterfly meme remixes? I had everything on that album except the remix of The One when it released, so I felt a bit cheated.
So, without further ado, here is Bill's re-imagining of The Remixes. Brace yourselves.
1. Dreamlover (Def Club Mix) - I wanted to open with Dreamlover as it was the one that started it all. 2. My All (Morales "My" Club Mix) 3. Heartbreaker (If You Should Ever Be Lonely Mix) 4. Butterfly (Meme's Extended Club Mix) - I replaced the Fly Away Club Mix with this rarity instead 5. Anytime You Need a Friend (C&C Club Mix) 6. Fantasy (Def Club Mix) 7. Honey (Classic Mix) 8. Always Be My Baby (Always Club Mix) 9. Emotions (12" Club Mix) 10. Joy to the World (Celebration Mix) - so Merry Christmas got represented, plus some of MC's best ad libs are in this version 11. Do You Know Where You're Going To (Mahogany Club Extended) - another rarity for the fans
1. Fantasy (Bad Boy with ODB) 2. Always Be My Baby (Mr. Dupri Mix) 3. My All/Stay Awhile (So So Def Remix) 4. Thank God I Found You (Make It Last Remix) 5. Breakdown (The Mo' Thugs Remix) *or* The Roof (Mobb Deep Extended Version) 6. Honey (So So Def Remix) 7. Dreamlover (Bam Jam Soul) - hard to find, but a brilliant remix. Appaz this was the original version. 8. Heartbreaker (Remix) 9. Underneath the Stars (Drifting Remix) 10. I Still Believe (Pure Imagination Remix) 11. Someday (12" Jackswing Mix) - want to show the poor debut some love, as it wasn't represented originally 12. Butterfly (Classic Bossa Nova) - beautiful rare remix 13. Anytime You Need a Friend (Soul Convention Remix) 14. One Sweet Day (Chucky's Remix) - I wanted to calm the compilation down and end with these two smooth soulful numbers.
Let me know what remixes you would add. I feel bad for not including CTTA and TGTBAW. I had to draw the line somewhere. Morales remixes started losing their appeal post-Honey, and TGTBAW (and Make It Happen for that matter), were just the boring industry standard that Mariah soon rose above.

Daydream shuffled (92,612)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I often play Mariah's albums in shuffle mode and see what track order is spat out. This re-ordering of Daydream I felt really worked.
It was quite jarring to open the album with Looking In, but then she does open tours with the instrumental from time to time. It then blended quite nicely into Fantasy. Daydream Interlude appeared in the middle and really helped to break the album up and divide it into two parts. Underneath the Stars sounded great as what I would call the album's closer, because the actual end of I Am Free felt more like some brilliant epilogue. It was such a different experience to end the album on a positive note. Also my Daydream is 13 tracks because obviously I have Slipping Away in there.
1. Looking In 2. Fantasy 3. One Sweet Day 4. Open Arms 5. Slipping Away 6. Always Be My Baby 7. Daydream Interlude 8. Long Ago 9. Forever 10. Melt Away 11. When I Saw You 12. Underneath the Stars 13. I Am Free

Charmbracelet (92,575)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I've been thinking about this album a lot lately (waves to Licia), and what it would take for me to engage with it fully. Part of the problem I have with it is the length of the album and the hushed/whispering vocals. My revised tracklisting would be as follows:
1. Through the Rain 2. The One (without rap version) 3. I Know What You Want 4. Yours 5. I Only Wanted 6. Clown 7. My Saving Grace 8. Subtle Invitation 9. Bringin' On the Heartbreak (single version) 10. Sunflowers 11. Through the Rain (remix)
I've axed a lot of the filler and I think its condensed length makes it a more cohesive body of work. I upgraded IKWYW to a proper track rather than a bonus one, and included the single versions for BOTH and The One. I might go turn this into a playlist now actually.
