Haha, it's no different to my attempt at trying to understand how CB is your favourite album. Every time I listen to it or its stupid songs I think of you, so that's a good thing to come from it. I always go into my CB listens with the best will in the world, but by the 19th chorus of Lullaby I just give up and switch to Daydream lol.

To add, I never thought Honey was a great lead off single (other than the brilliant video). I wouldn't even class it as an up-tempo. It relies on the slow groove/sample so heavily it's virtually tuneless. Same goes for Babydoll. They're the weakest tracks on the album in my opinion, but everything else is a poetic, classy, and sincere effort. That run of Butterfly, My All, The Roof, Fourth of July and Breakdown has never been beaten.

I don't disagree with you. Butterfly is a beautiful album lyrically, very poetic. But it's not my favourite album either.

B, go listen to I Want To Thank You by Alicia Myers, then Make It Happen by Mariah. Mariah's written a lot of great songs in her time, but she's also had a number of (justified) out of court settlements as well. You do need at times to take a step back and see things for what they are. Remove those rose tinted glasses every once in a while. You're a good soul but sometimes your love for her is a bit blinded.

Agree. Walter and Mariah's "falling out" was a contractual issue more than anything. She wanted him to take sides, he couldn't because Tommy was his boss, she didn't like that so stopped working with him. He's always spoken highly and respectfully of her talent. People pouncing on "emblazonedgate" need to get over it. All it indicated was that Walter needs to invest in a thesaurus.

Haha, he is most prominent on the bridge. Mariah coos "you and me" and he adds a backing "you and me" before she sings "in a cloud of reverie".

As I said, if you prefer the songs on Caution to those on, say, Butterfly, then great for you. You're a yes-yes bleating lamb so it's pointless debating anything with your kind, no offence.

"Songwriting abilities is not just measured by success, most of Mariah's greatest songs didn't even sell and I don't care if they were a single or not."
Um, I didn't say that, anywhere in my message. In fact, the song I referenced as superior was an album track that is unknown outside her fandom, and was not a single.
As I said in my message, it's just my opinion. If you think GTFO is a great example of Mariah's songwriting, over, say, AIWFCIY, Close My Eyes, Outside, Breakdown, Petals, Can't Let Go, Vision of Love and Vanishing then, well, so be it.
But the fact of the matter is, it isn't.

I wouldn't say "her pen is as sharp as ever" when she hasn't written a top ten hit song in ten years. Not taking away from her songwriting talent of course, but "I was wayward child, with the weight of the world, that I held deep inside, life was a winding road, and I learned many things, little ones shouldn't know" is slightly better than "how bout you get the f*** out". Just my opinion.

Re: Celine vs Mariah (92,428) (92,430)

I'm enjoying all these posts about the vocal trinity. I only own a few albums of Whitney and Celine, so I can't speak for all their material, but I do find they often stick to the same gear. All Whitney's ballads begin with the same keyboard instrument and end with the huge belt, and Celine, whilst technically a great vocalist, does come across as awfully bland at times.
Having said that, I don't think anyone will ever sing The Star Spangled Banner better than Whitney, and I agree that the song Fly by Celine on the Falling Into You album is very moving.

Hmmm. I sort of grouped The Art of Letting Go with Triumphant. I know it was the album's original (better) title, but it only ended up on the deluxe edition and wasn't on the regular edition, so I'd count it more as a buzz single rather than an official one. But yes, it was released and streamable and buyable so I suppose it technically counts. Had it rocketed to number one it would be considered official by many here I'm sure lol.

Agree, wonderful news for Mariah. Long overdue, but so much deserved. The impact her songs have had on my life, I cannot even begin to explain. She has been my constant for years and years. I love her and what she has produced. She is an exceptional talent and it finally seems as though the world is realising what we all knew since day one. Massive congratulations, she will be delighted for this meaningful recognition.

I know there was a big gap between them, but I always have and always will consider Beautiful to be the first single from MIAM and You're Mine as the second. The follow up, I agree, should have been either YDKWTD or Make It Look Good, the best song on the album, featuring the brilliant Stevie Wonder. Such a waste. The only thing I dislike about YDKWTD is Wale ruining that amazing introduction by Mariah. It's like, just shut up.

IWTKWLI was, in many countries, her best charting single since Touch My Body, and she gave some brilliant live performances of the song at the time, plus, the loose brown curls of the debut era returned which was beautiful. 100% was again, another samey rehash in the key of Bye Bye, I Stay In Love etc. The best song from Memoirs was Ribbon, and that should have been the second (or even first) single. The harmonies on the middle 8 are divine.

Re: Important recordings (92,329) (92,331)

Thank you everybody for your replies. I did of course consider We Belong Together, however, I felt the other three brought about industry and generational changes to music. Those of you who weren't around in the early 90s need to understand that (caps) nobody (end caps) had ever sung the way Mariah did before. Sure Minnie had her whistles and Aretha had her runs, but neither really used them to good musical effect like Mariah did. Now every female singer post-Mariah mimicks her style. AIWFCIY is self explanatory really, and Fantasy Remix because again, it was so left field and had never, ever been done on that scale before. Remember again where we were at the time. This was the balladeer, who sang about heroes in long black dresses, married to the boss of Sony, duetting with ODB from Wu Tang. It was an incredible, never to be matched, genius stroke that shaped pop music for the future right there and then. After those three songs, things would never be the same.

It was ready for release, but was pulled at the last minute because of nervousness around how the UK audience would react to it, what with it being her most heavy R&B/hip hop flavoured number at that point in time.

As an aside, is anyone in disagreement that the three most important recordings Mariah ever made are:
1. Vision of Love 2. All I Want for Christmas Is You 3. Fantasy (Remix)
Would be interested to know of any differing opinions. These three songs I think define Mariah Carey.

Geek alert: UK singles ranking (92,314)
by Bill from the UK

Hi all. You know I love me some lists. And you know I love me some stats. And you know I love being a geek and an excel database here and there. Please see below an excerpt from my Mariah excel, which lists all her UK singles in order of chart position. Why do I find things like this so interesting? Lol. Interestingly, both Breakdown and The Roof managed to chart (at the back end) despite not being released in the UK. The Roof was withdrawn from sale and so the import versions of the two singles did make an impact. Makes you wonder how well they would have fared, had they been released officially. The mind boggles.
Position - Year - Title 01 - 1994 - Without You 01 - 2000 - Against All Odds 02 - 1992 - I'll Be There 02 - 1994 - All I Want for Christmas Is You 02 - 2005 - We Belong Together 03 - 1994 - Endless Love 03 - 1996 - Always Be My Baby 03 - 1997 - Honey 03 - 2003 - I Know What You Want 04 - 1995 - Fantasy 04 - 1996 - Open Arms 04 - 1998 - My All 04 - 1998 - When You Believe 04 - 2005 - It's Like That 05 - 1999 - Heartbreaker 05 - 2008 - Touch My Body 06 - 1995 - One Sweet Day 07 - 1993 - Hero 08 - 1994 - Anytime You Need a Friend 08 - 2002 - Through the Rain 09 - 1990 - Vision of Love 09 - 1993 - Dreamlover 09 - 2005 - Get Your Number/Shake It Off 10 - 2000 - Thank God I Found You 11 - 2005 - Don't Forget About Us 12 - 2001 - Loverboy 16 - 1999 - I Still Believe 17 - 1991 - Emotions 17 - 1992 - Make It Happen 17 - 2003 - Boy (I Need You) 19 - 2009 - I Want to Know What Love Is 20 - 1992 - Can't Let Go 22 - 1997 - Butterfly 22 - 2013 - Beautiful 27 - 2006 - Say Somethin' 30 - 2008 - Bye Bye 32 - 2001 - Never Too Far/Don't Stop 37 - 1990 - Love Takes Time 38 - 1991 - Someday 52 - 2009 - Obsessed 54 - 1991 - There's Got to Be a Way 81 - 2010 - Angels Cry 84 - 2008 - I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time 87 - 1998 - The Roof (import) 87 - 2014 - You're Mine (Eternal) 90 - 2013 - The Art of Letting Go 95 - 2008 - I Stay In Love 98 - 1998 - Breakdown (import)

Charm Girl haha, love it. Yes I've no idea why The One was axed when it was seemingly received so positively by fans and critics in their reviews. Interesting that several of the responses have Yours. Great song, and agree, if the JT version had been released I think that would have been really successful.

Through the Rain was fine for a lead single and good at "resetting" everything after Glitter. I was excited to hear The One was planned to be the second single, and mortified when it was a scrapped in favour of Boy. I would have put out I Only Wanted or Yours as the third single, and would have still ended it with I Know What You Want as the fourth.
