Haha. It's up there with "100%" and its elongated thinning camera lens in terms of bad videos. I think Auld Lang Syne took all of 20 minutes to film and edit together lol.

Re: Signature song (91,991) (91,996)
by Bill from the UK

It is definitely AIWFCIY. That song will go on for generations like White Christmas and The Christmas Song (Chestnuts). It's used in TV ads, it's her most covered song, and it's now the song everyone associates with her and the song non-fans enjoy. It's completely captured this generation as evidenced by it becoming her 19th number one in the US.
As great as Always Be My Baby is, for all the reasons you listed, it never made a lasting impact outside the US. It's never played on the radio (again, other than the US) and it quickly fell out of every non-fan's memory after its initial chart run over 20 years ago.
The only other song of hers that would come close to AIWFCIY is Hero, in terms of signature song status. But why fight it? Sure it may have been a bit overkill this year but I think that was due to the anniversary and the push for number one. I really enjoyed the ride this season, with all the new videos (unreleased footage, St John the Divine, Tokyo Dome HD, and the Make My Wish Come True version), the deluxe edition of the album, the coherent interviews, the brilliant Walkers ad, the concerts, and then the number one. It's been great. I think you might be suffering from AIWFCIY fatigue which is understandable. I still think it is single handedly the best thing she has ever done.

You're not getting it. What I was saying was that despite the fact her voice has changed, no one is disrespecting her because of that, because it happens. Caution was great because she sings now in a comfortable range and toned down the acrobatics that she can't replicate live. This is a good thing and the right way forward for her. The best thing she did recently was Unforgettable and that was sung in her current vocal with no gimmicks and flourishes, and it sounded brilliant and the song was great.

When are you back at school? Lol, joking. No one is disrespecting Mariah from any of the posts I've read. But don't be dillusional. A fact is a fact and Mariah's voice was brilliant in the 90s and is not on par currently due to her own lifestyle choices and general aging.

YouTube Q&A (91,888)

So this was great. I laughed out loud when she was talking about the Daydream tour and said, "It was only a ten city tour because back then I wasn't allowed to leave the house. But we've come a long way, we can leave the house now. It's good." Oh Mariah. How I love your wit. Thank you to Fernando for suggesting she releases the Daydream tour to celebrate the anniversary. I could see the cogs turning in her head. The Japan stretch was great but let's face it, Rotterdam and London (which I attended FYI) were incredible.

Adam, thank you. You articulate so well what I can never manage to get across haha. I will always love and support Mariah and her music, and always look forward to new albums from her, whatever the style. If she comes out with Caution 2, Merry Christmas 3, or my longed for jazz standards album (with some MC originals in that style of course - think Christmas In NY), then I'll be happy. Saying that, those gunning for the 20th #1, another Emancipation era, or a big selling album, don't hold you breath if she doesn't change gear with the new record. R&B peppered with hip hop, samples, and guest rappers will be appreciated, and well received across her fan base I'm sure, but she will really need to do something left field to get attention.
By that I mean, imagine if she self-wrote and produced an album single handedly by herself. That would be amazing. She's often expressed her annoyance with how over produced the debut album was. Imagine for the 30th if she re-worked the original tracks, updated it, removed the 80s gloss and stripped it down? Or if she re-sang the songs in a new style? Something like that would be amazing.

Re: Walter A. gets really candid (91,839) (91,850)
by Bill from the UK

I have to keep reminding myself you're still in school and have only been a Mariah fan for like a year. All the sensible, measured and reasonable respondents to your wailing are adults who were buying Mariah records before you were born. So it is what it is.
Walter is an incredibly successful and talented producer and songwriter who has had many independent successes, as has been mentioned. And like it or not, Tommy was the one who insisted Mariah make a Christmas album. Her initial response was "stop trying to turn me into Connie Francis" and now she's the much adorned Queen of Christmas, and has made somewhat of a latter day career on that element alone, with Christmas concerts, endorsements, movies, books, and merchandise.
No one is taking anything away from Mariah. We're all fans and acknowledge her talent, but she hasn't achieved what she has single handedly.

Oh I agree they were amazing. It's almost as if Merry Christmas should be Mariah feat. The Price Sisters and Melonie as they really made that album what it is. I think the only songs they don't appear on are Miss You Most (at Christmas Time) and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. That acapella of them on YouTube singing Jesus Oh What a Wonderful Child is beautiful. That gospel, soulful choir sound they brought to the records is very much missed.

Playing devil's advocate here, it is unfortunate that what should be a happy time of celebration for the pair is mired with Walter receiving death threats online. I mean, come on guys. Death threats? Over a co-writing credit? Grow up. Sometimes being a Mariah fan is embarrassing. Walter played every instrument on that record and gave it the undeniable Christmas sheen. Just listen to the instrumental and tell me that isn't a work of genius. That along with the incredible background vocals from the Price Sisters and Melonie D, and Mariah's flawless and dynamic vocal delivery and brilliant lyric is what created this classic. Everybody involved played their part perfectly.

Agree, Oh Santa is a good song in its own right, it's just a shame it will forever be compared against the timeless juggernaut that is AIWFCIY. I absolutely love the "cheerleader chant" that the song has, and agree the upper register is fantastic. Although MCIIY is not considered one of her best albums, it really is a nice complement to Merry Christmas, with some beautiful moments. O Come All Ye Faithful with Pat, When Christmas Comes, The First Noel and One Child are just beautiful.

I think people are more being factual rather than clutching at straws. Let's not forget this very same thing happened with One Sweet Day. It appeared on both 1995/1996 year end charts, because it was a number one in both years, and it was both the last number one of 1995 and the first number one of 1996.
Wikipedia lists all the number ones of the Hot 100 era, click on 1995 and then 1996 and you'll see One Sweet Day on both lists.
So, as much as you may not like it, this is the fact of the matter and how current chart rulings are applied. If Mariah stays at number one with AIWFCIY, it will be viewed as being across two separate decades. Sorry.

But charts are different. If someone said "what was the last number one of 2019", the answer is Mariah. If, a week later, someone else asks the unrelated question of "what was the first number one of 2020", the answer is Mariah. If a list is compiled tracking all number ones from January 2020 to December 2029, Mariah will be on the list. Equally if a list is compiled tracking all number ones from 2010 to 2019, Mariah is on that list as well.
We love everybody.

AIWFCIY #1 (91,683)
by Bill from the UK

I've just read an article on Billboard that AIWFCIY has indeed (and finally) become Mariah's 19th number one and has topped the Hot 100 (exclamation mark). Merry Christmas everybody, what wonderful news. Congratulations to the US fans for all you did to "make it happen", and to Mariah and her team for all their efforts. 19th number one in 2019.

Re: Caution (91,658) (91,670)
by Bill from the UK

But let's not dance around the obvious here. Mariah returns to the top ten on both sides of the Atlantic with an amazing song every year. This proves that all she needs to be a top ten artist again is a brilliant song. To be blunt, her last few albums have been absolutely fine, but there's not been any "wow" song. No Fantasy. No Heartbreaker. No We Belong Together (but plenty of imitations). She's got it in her to knock it out the park as she proves every year, but she opts to instead tell us to GTFO and then follows that with yet another carbon copy of a 15 year old song. Caution was a good album but I doubt it will be remembered like the string of albums Music Box through to Butterfly and then Emancipation. But we are where we are and we love everybody.

Just be careful you don't put your signature jinx on things though (remember how Caution was going to outsell Thriller?). Don't tempt fate. Just enjoy the song's ride and hope that it gets what it deserves. If it doesn't, then so be it.

AIWFCIY thesis (91,593)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
I swear I could write a thesis on this song and how good it is. I was listening to the unearthed extended version and who else has noticed this? The first head voice "you" as the song's crescendo is one note (with an embellishment at the end). The next "you" has a little trill at the beginning, making it two notes ending with an embellishment. The next one (the last you hear on the record) has two "trills", then the next one (extended version) has "three". For each "trill" she adds at the beginning of the note, the same amount of bars have passed in the song. She then ends with a straight "you", as per the opening of the outro. Is that not incredible musicianship?

I don't think it counts as it is done per account, isn't it? Otherwise everyone could manipulate the charts. Hope you have a generous data allowance lol. It's different from how it was in 2001 when Loverboy entered the chart at 4,528 and lambs went nuts being [sic] multiple copies of the single to help her out. You were purchasing the damn thing so no one cares. And then it got discounted to 1 cent and rocketed up the charts. Lolz.

This is great news, especially as its peak week at Christmas is still to come. I have everything crossed for a 19th number one. None of her songs has ever been more deserving or more universally loved. Midweek positioning in the UK has her climbing from 8 to 5.
