This is beautiful, thanks for sharing. I've tried to find the full video of Whitney singing it but can't find it anywhere. If anyone has the link please do share.

I want to know about the pre-fame days. The demos, the background singing, the wood shop with Ben, Warner's wanting to sign her, school, growing up etc. I also want her to come clean about her discovery. I don't really buy the Cinderella yarn that was spin when she was launched (all too perfect), but I do believe the rumour she was discovered years earlier as a 14/15 year old and was set up with songwriters and groomed for live performing etc. pending her "coming of age". I also want to know about unreleased songs and why she never put them on albums, as well as her voice and its decline over the years (or, is it more or less as it's always been but she's gradually toned down the engineering over the years).

I think like everybody I just wish Languishing was a bit longer. It's almost a crime that it's so short, as Boy goes into it's 17th chorus.

I know what you mean. The older album notes quite clearly depicted it as lyrics by Mariah Carey, music by Mariah Carey and (insert collaborator). But ever since it became just a string of surnames, I've never been sure. I do think I read somewhere that Missy Elliott wrote the verses to Babydoll and Mariah the chorus. Other than that, I'm not sure.

Yes Breakdown is up there as well. Pretty much the entire Butterfly record is a treasure trove of great lyrical moments, followed closely I think by Charmbracelet.

There's so many, and they're often found in the deep album cuts nobody knows. The opening line of The Roof always gets me. "It wasn't raining yet, but it was definitely a little misty on that warm November night." What a scene setter. That entire song is lyrically and sonically one of the best things she ever put out. So atmospheric and intense, get melancholy and subdued at the same time. I can't even describe it to people, I just have to play it to them.

Yes, I did actually burst out laughing when she said she doesn't like people who cover songs. She literally hasn't managed to pull together an album of 100% original material since her debut in 1990.

The only Madonna albums I've ever owned are Immaculate Collection (like everyone else in the world) and Bedtime Stories. The song Secret is the best thing she ever did.

Re: Single choices for each album (90,090) (90,093)

That's not how you spell Migrate.
In all honesty I've been relatively okay with the choices made as singles, particularly during the 90s. I only wish the Butterfly singles all got worldwide full releases (only Honey and My All did) rather than specific singles for certain territories. One interesting fact was that And You Don't Remember was set to be the 4th single from Emotions, but was shelved when I'll Be There and Unplugged unexpectedly took off. I do also wonder how You're So Cold would have fared, had it been chosen as the first single from that album.

Randy, I'm just stunned. If We, Giving Me Life, The Wind, Your Girl, All In Your Mind are fantastic songs. I do agree with Irresistible, although Boy is a million times worse. My list: Mariah Carey through to Butterfly are flawless. Rainbow - Did I Do That Glitter - Want You Charmbracelet - Boy Emancipation - I Wish You Knew E=MC2 - I'm That Chick Memoirs - Obsessed Merry Christmas II You - Auld Lang Syne Me I Am Mariah - Supernatural Caution - GTFO

Yes, Long Ago is a good one. I love how right at the end of the song as the fade out kicks in, she starts singing the first verse again. Great touch.

Re: Mariah's response (89,998) (90,002)
by Bill from the UK

Agree, not dignifying the character attack with a response is the best response she could give. I don't like the idea of people going after Stella now they have her phone number. That's as low as she is, and paints Mariah's fans in a bad light and again only fans the flames when it's best to ignore it. Plus there is no evidence Stella released the video. Mariah's Entourage is huge and it could have been leaked by anybody. Although Stella is an awful manager and seemingly awful person, I doubt she's that's stupid as to potentially land herself in hot water like that.

Thanks Andrew. I love Lead the Way, it is one of her best songs and really helps pull the Glitter album together. I never really analysed whether the ending was a cut and paste job, but having listened to it several times now I don't think it is. The fact you can hear her running out of breath towards the end helps the case, and I agree with Special K that she went all out for Glitter. If it was recorded a few years earlier, then it's even easier to believe and she had some great vocal moments during that time (CTTA and Against All Odds climaxes), so yes. I think it's genuine. Maybe I'm naive?

Yeah I was going to chime in and say I thought LTW was a leftover from Butterfly, so was recorded in that period. The publishing stamp says 1997.

The Emotions outro whistles are so iconic. I did love in 1991 when she was in good form and replaced the laugh at the end with ultra super sonic high notes. And then there's that one performance from the Musix Box tour where she goes nuts on the second "inside" lol.
