Found this fan made remix of It's Like That on YouTube. Set to a hilarious video of Oprah dancing, and remixed to sound like it was straight out of 1993. This version could have been on Music Box haha.

When you look at the recipients of the Icon Award, Madonna is a pretty obvious omission though. It is equally as eyebrow raising that J Lo was awarded it ahead of Madonna. Madonna has been very influential and prominent on the charts for decades, and is one of the few musicians who literally everybody in the English speaking world has heard of (alongside Elvis and Michael Jackson). I don't think she warranted it over Mariah of course, as MC owned the charts throughout the 90s and inspired and set the template for a generation of female singers after her just as Aretha did before her. But yeh, I can understand why she'd be a bit pissed. If she's awarded it next time though it will lose its impact as it would seem like a reaction to her upset, which is never good. But ho hum. I really haven't paid attention to Madonna since I was in like, 7th or 8th grade when she used to be popular, so I didn't hear of her tirade until now.

I agree. She exuded confidence in earlier performances throughout the early to mid-90s. If her nerves are due to her voice now being unreliable, this is through her own choices she's made. Alcohol, marijuana, and excessive singing without recovery all damage a voice, yet she continues to do all these things. It's only because her voice was so spectacular to begin with, that she can still get by (albeit with a lot of smoke and mirrors). Not hating, simply stating the facts as I see them. Mariah is free to make whatever choices she wants to with her life, but as with everything, you reap what you sow.

Mariah's speech was absolutely amazing. Has to be up there as one of the best she's ever done. I was moved by what she said because it was so true. Her music has been the soundtrack to my life and has got me through so much and has always been there for me. Mariah, thank you for everything. I love you so much.

I also have been playing the debut a lot recently. Her voice is flawless, and the difference with Whitney is around tone I think. Mariah's voice has so many different facets and nuances, and of course the range. Her tone, especially on everything pre-Daydream, had this warmth and body to it, it's hard to explain really but I've never heard another voice like it. I think her friend from school put it perfectly: "When you sing, it sounds like there is music behind you."

Re: Mariah's memoir (89,278) (89,282)

I'm not holding out much hope for anything about her personal relationships she's had, and to be frank I'd rather than stay between her and her partners rather than her airing her dirty laundry in public. Plus, she's got so many NDAs flying around she can't say anything beyond the vague answers she's already given.
My hope for the memoirs is that they are about the early days pre-fame, and her songwriting and musicianship when crafting her songs. The stories behind them, what they meant to her, how they came about, (caps) why Slipping Away wasn't on Daydream (end caps) and tidbits and nuggets along those lines.
Plus it'll be great to have her confirm in writing that Thirsty is about Damizza and not Nick.

Every track is a winner. Giving Me Life, One Mo Gen and The Distance are my top 3. I hope Mariah's next album continues the trend of being short, punchy and concise with no filler (sideways glance at Charmbracelet).

Re: When You Don't Believe (89,265) (89,268)
by Bill from the UK

Playing devil's advocate here, but they clearly bonded during the recording and promotion of the song and Mariah was visibly devastated at her death. More than a snub, I believe it was more likely label politics that prevented it being included on WH's Greatest Hits. Hell, maybe they didn't see a #15 charting song as a "great hit", maybe a percentage of the album sales need to go to Mariah, or Sony, or DreamWorks, and it wasn't worth it. Who knows? I think they're all more likely reasons it was left off than Whitney deliberately not including it. Compilation albums rarely have much input from the artist and are usually a contractual obligation.
As for her attitude, I never saw her as obnoxious, more self assured and confident in her fantastic talent. She didn't suffer fools and told it how it was. It was a defense mechanism more than anything.

Actually Sweetheart was the intended first release for #1s, and was a physical release in several countries outside the US. It was planned as the lead single in the UK but was shelved after it wasn't picked up by radio outlets.

Re: Butterfly - GOAT (89,255) (89,257)
by Bill from the UK

Whoa back up. I never said nor claimed Butterfly was an inferior album, it just wasn't the commercial juggernaut of its predecessors because the songs weren't geared towards mainstream commercial audiences. What's "laughable" is your theory that a record company would sabotage a project they have invested millions in to not generate a return on it, all because of internal politics. The reason is the casual fans who liked and purchased albums off the back of songs like Hero and Without You don't enjoy songs like The Roof or Breakdown, which is why the more "safer" option of a lead single and a standard Mariah ballad was chosen. It makes business sense.
Also, the sabotage only really happened when Mariah left the label with the whole Glitter/J.Lo debacle. Which makes sense as she moved to a rival label.

Not sure I quite agree with your take on Butterfly's promotion. It had numerous videos commissioned to promote the album at huge expense: Honey, Honey remix, Butterfly, My All, My All remix, The Roof and Breakdown. Saying there was no promotion isn't right. Honey had a massive worldwide push the same as all her other lead releases from her albums. Yes, the US only saw two singles commercially released. But the aforementioned tracks were all on rotation at MTV and numerous radio stations. Internationally other singles were released. Mariah herself cited the reason for only releasing two commercial singles, they didn't want to break her streak of number ones she'd had since Fantasy. Don't forget her competition was Whitney and she had a 7 consecutive number one streak. The Butterfly tracks, whilst all great, were a step away from what she was commercially successful at previously, so the label's caution is understood. She was heading into unchartered waters and was their biggest asset. It's like sending your best ship out full steam ahead into a stormy sea. Like it or not, the reason Butterfly didn't match Music Box or Daydream was, simply, because it wasn't Music Box or Daydream.

Plus, and no offence, but the song really isn't all that. It really does make a difference when MC writes a song vs when she doesn't. It fits the film but as a standalone song for the charts, I'm afraid "that's a no no".

Yes, agree with the outros too. Till the End of Time's ending is probably my favourite, followed by Everything Fades Away. Other great outros are To Be Around You (love the party going on), obviously All In Your Mind, and Do You Know Where You're Going To. Okay so she's queen of the intros, outros, and inbetween-tros lol. She is the queen.
