Migrate or Caution (99,863)
by T from USA
| |
|

Which single was the biggest missed opportunity? Was it Migrate which would've been a great second single to continue the momentum. Or the song Caution which could've launched the album making a big difference in success.

Re: Butterfly 25th September 16 (99,857) (99,862)

The new version of Butterfly could be brilliant like the late night WBT session. Or could be flat like the Close My Eyes 2020 redo. All depends how much effort she puts in on the reimagining. I also think having the original tour concert to go along with it would be nice. Why create a whole brand new album with new songs (like Caution) when she already has these amazing songs ready to go that the new generation has no idea about?

I will introduce the new generation to Butterfly which is arguably her best 90s album. Right now the new generations memory can only go back as far as TEOM. So this way she can shed light on Butterfly and pump some streams into it.

The new Mariah Carey album is a remake of the Butterfly album with re-recorded vocals and guest artists to celebrate its 25th anniversary on September 16, which happens to be a Friday this year.

Tommy the racist (99,756)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
I know we've heard the story meant [sic] times how controlled Mariah was by Sony and Tommy. And even heard his racist tendencies. Especially the story in her book about him lashing out when she wanted to work with Puffy during the Daydream era. But can I ask if any of that is really true? Or is it just a narrative Mariah wants us to believe? One only needs to look back years before the Puffy incident at the Dreamlover music video. For being under strict control by a person who didn't want her being associated with blackness in any way shape or form, she sure had a lot (only) of male black (shirtless) dancers in the video. How did that go through the control room? I don't doubt that she may have felt he was racist. But he's the same guy who discovered and made careers of many black artists. He may have lead her to be "more white" at the beginning so that she would sell more. But she was a 20 year old women and knew what the game was. She went along with it. I'm not buying that he was this total racist who was controlling to the point of no end. I mean two of his three marriages were with multiracial women.

Re: Mariah featured in NYTimes article about cheating (99,706) (99,707)
by T from USA

Back in the mid '90s record labels were notorious for inflating sales numbers, even switching barcodes of other acts to the new release to raise it higher on sound scan. Columbia and Tommy were huge participants in this. Mariah debut twice at #1 for singles in the mid '90s so there is question of the legitimacy of these stats.

Mariah featured in NYTimes article about cheating (99,704)

The record industry is a dirty thing. This article from 1996 is quite interesting and talks about Sony and Mariah a lot throughout. So how do we really know how much an artist has really sold?

I like the enthusiasm but we all have to remember that she made something special with Caution. Really fresh and cool. But it didn't see the light of day. Unless Mariah is going to have a Super Bowl type promo spot like Mary had, there is no point in trying to reinvent herself to be a mainstream act anymore. Think about it, Mary is everywhere on everyone's tongue but that is thanks to the Halftime show. I actually think Mariah's approach of concentrating on re-doing her old songs and focusing only on Christmas is her best bet. She can't fail there. Sure she will never be front and center in the mainstream but she will always find some success that way. Once we hear the remake of The Roof and Babydoll we won't even want for anything with the hottest new producers. We will be mesmerized by the old songs, redone.

Re: One offs compilation album? (99,686) (99,688)

Triumphant was doomed from the start. She was no where near done with the album so "The Art Of Letting Go" album would've looked totally different. She had t completed that song until a year after releasing Triumphant. I'm with you, I wish TAOLG was actually on the main album, I would've liked it to replace Heavenly (which could've been on the deluxe instead). I for on hate the concept of deluxe albums because it screams of greed from the label. It's like the artists make the art and choose the amount of songs, and then big business comes in and tacks on a few more songs so they can sell the whole thing all over again. That's why I love E=MC2 for the fact that it was a one and done. Like her 90's albums. I kinda wish MIAMTEC never happened.

Thanks. In an alternative universe Mariah would've just released two albums after TEOM. But those two would've been the two greatest albums she had ever done. (Memoirs would be mixed with E=MC2. And MIAMTEC would've mixed with Caution.) All the songs that didn't make the cut could've ended up on later Rarities discs. It would go something like this:
E=MC2 (IDJ/2009) 1. Migrate (ft. T-Pain) 2. Touch My Body 3. Cruise Control (ft. Damian Marley) 4. H.A.T.E.U. 5. Side Effects (ft. Young Jeezy) 6. I'm That Chick 7. Obsessed 8. I'll Be Loving You Long Time 9. Betcha Gonna Know 10. Thanks For Nothing 11. Standing O 12. For The Record 13. It's a Wrap 14. I Wish You Well
Caution (Sony/2018) 1. GTFO 2. With You 3. Caution 4. A NoNo 5. The Distance (ft. Ty Dolla$ign) 6. Giving Me Life (ft. Slick Rick) 7. One Mo' Gen 8. 8th Grade 9. Stay Long Love You (ft. Gunna) 10. Faded 11. Dedicated (ft. Nas) 12. #Beautiful (ft. Miguel) 13. Portrait

I like this one too. Mariah wasn't in a good place to release MIAMTEC. First it took so long to make and then it felt rushed upon release. Makes you wonder if she would've just put some of the better songs in the vault and had beefed up Caution with them how would it of turned out. At least the album would've had a sure fire hit in Beautiful feat. Miguel. I always thought Dedicated and Faded sounded more like Caution era songs, especially because they were made with two producers she hadn't ever worked with before. Same with Beautiful.

New album is an old album (99,677)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
Everyone is assuming that she will have a new studio album ready for us this year but you know how long it takes her get an album ready, and with no real label support she's not going to have the funds to work with the people it will take to make a hit. I think she's spent the last two years in Atlanta with Daniel Moore (In the Mix, Portrait, Close My Eyes '20) and his band. She's reworking Butterfly for the 25th anniversary at the end of the year. Hopefully a documentary will go with it. It's called the Butterfly Lounge. That's the new(ish) material. After that it will be close to Christmas time. I think people need to keep their expectations in line. She tweeted Bruno Mars to "come thru" to the lounge but it didn't happen. She's not gonna get high profile busy artists to come out for free. Would I love Drake, Beyonce and the Weeknd? Sure. Is it going to happen this year? No.

I think the reason she was never heavily advertised as a songwriter was because she wrote in collaboration with others on pretty much every song. Only [Vanishing] comes to mind for completely self penned. I think there's two kinds of song writers. The Carole King, Stevie Wonder, Alanis Moresette type who write all of their own songs in their entirety. And the other kind is Mariah, Janet, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, who write all their songs but only certain lyrics or lines in each song.

Well it's her first album since going #1 again on the BB100. That alone will ignite a fire in her to make some more hits I believe. I actually think JD could really help this time around as it's been a while since they did anything together (minus Save The Day, but that was a leftover).

Obsessed with Nicki Minaj (99,582)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
Hey all. Just had a thought. We know that Mariah teamed up with Nicki in 2009 for the UOMF remix and the video and song were pretty good. But what if instead of that song she tapped Nicki to be the feature on the original Obsessed? Do you think it would've went even higher than #7 on the BB100? In stead of Gucci Mane she really could've had a smash hit if she had Nicki on the track, that's my opinion. Maybe like what a newish Jay Z was to Heartbreaker, Nicki could've been to Obsessed.

Mariah created great songs that could've been hits on Caution. It takes more than a great song for her. It takes a massive investment in promotion and nobody is willing to invest anymore. If she featured Drake or Rihanna then maybe the case could be made for a major push.

Mariah would never include Celine for fear of being out shined on her own album. It's a sad fact but also we're dealing with someone who is very insecure to start.

Mariah did her touring. She connected with fans all around the world for years. Especially from 2012-2020 she toured non stop. I think now it's time to rest the voice and just record the music that makes everyone smile again. I wouldn't care if she never puts herself in those harsh touring conditions again.

Caution the last great album (99,520)

I would be okay if Caution represents the last studio album Mariah releases. Going forward if she just "re-imagines" old songs and reissues anniversary editions with Rarities I would be satisfied.
