The Art of Letting Go (103,758)
by Bill from the UK

I'm sure I'm not alone in having an impending sense of dread, rather than excitement, about the upcoming Christmas concerts. At this point we know the drill. 95% lipped performances with the occasional "eh" barked out, peppered with a couple of verses being "spoken melodically" for good measure. The focus will be on the hair, make up, breasts, and shimmering gown or, heaven forbid, a return to those hideous leotards.
YouTube will be littered with comments from the delusionals saying it's live, she has a cold, she has nothing to prove, she's preserving her voice etc. That last one always gets me lol. What on earth is she preserving her voice for, if not when performing live in concert? I mean, she's been preserving her voice since 1997. It's preserved for heaven's sake.
My advice as Mariah's manager? Cancel the concerts, retire gracefully, and focus on re-releasing back catalogue specials. Start with The Rarities II You (I Lose Control, We're Not Making Love Anymore, There for Me, and Randy's Theme all should have been represented on the original), find and release your infamous demo tape so we can experience what Tommy did in the limo that fateful night, HD the crap out of the Music Box, Daydream (especially London, which I attended), Butterfly, Rainbow and Charmbracelet Tour footage, and please, seek permission from the estate of Prince to release your Glitter-era duet.
Stagger that out over the next few years with "30" releases of the studio albums as their anniversaries hit and everyone will forget about the dreadful performances of the last 10-15 years which are now greatly outweighing the good.

Victor, I'll answer your question. I love Mariah not only because she is beautiful, but also because of her voice. I grew up listening to her, because my parents would play her music and a few other people's music (such as Luther V) all the time back in the early to mid 90s. They exposed me to a wide variety of music, singers, and genres, but they played Mariah all the time. Some of my first memories of music was hearing songs from Mariah's Daydream era. Those songs bring back so many sweet childhood memories and are forever etch in my mind. I was and still am enamored by her voice, and pen game. I love me some Mimi.

Exactly. You get my point here. The issue is that gay people will love Mariah because for us ageism is not a problem, or her marital status. But for some others it is, specially if Mariah is sexualized in their minds.

Wow Mariah is looking in great shape, from her recent Instagram post. She really seems in a good place right now and taking care of herself. Let’s hope that with the added confidence of looking her best she starts to focus on giving us some new music and working on those vocals. Maybe reliving the [Music Box] era has given her the push she needed to remember how great she was.

Tommy's thoughts about MC30 (103,431)
by Tevin from USA
| |
|
|
I feel like Everything Fades Away is about Tommy. I'd be quiet curious to know when Mariah wrote that song, possibly after "honeymoon gone bad", as told in her book. Maybe then she realized that marriage wasn't going to change how Tommy treated her, so from that time on her love for him faded more and more away. It's fun to speculate. But anyway as much as I never understood how the UK folks thought EFA should have come after All I Ever Wanted, I must admit after listening to it at the end of the official album now, and thinking of how it not only possibly represented what was going on in her marriage and life, but the song also played as a perfect prelude to Mariah's sweet sweet fantasy and eventual freedom as her subsequent two albums would show. Basically what I'm saying is the amazing people across the pond had it right this time around. EFA is the proper ending to Music Box. I stand corrected.

We never talk about the songs that are about Tommy. There are many. But, I'm in full support of "My Prayer" and "Working Hard" and any other songs left off the album. Music Box is perfect the way it was delivered. Tommy knew what he was doing.

Albums (103,122)
by Bill from the UK

Well Mariah argued her way out of Sony's 10-album deal early. They said albums like Unplugged and #1's didn't count, but she countered as Unplugged charted in the albums chart, as #1's contained new material and new singles. Then they agreed to part with Greatest Hits being the 10th album. Same might be said for the Epic contract. Caution, #1 to Infinity and that All I Want for Christmas Is You compilation for the book were all released through Epic. That makes three of the same logic is applied. Time will tell.

I believe someone on here mentioned that Mariah still has one or two more albums to fulfill with her current contract. I'm no lawyer, but if her voice isn't there to complete said tasks, what happens then? I wonder if she can release compilation type albums like MC Butterfly Lounge or Remixes 2 or Rarities 2. Also has Mariah done Twitter Spaces in a while?

Caution (103,114)
by Andrew from the UK
| |
|
|
I think it now wise for everyone to hope that Caution was Mariah's last album of new material. I am glad people are now more honest about the damage to Mariah's voice but I do not think nearly honest enough. To be blunt: Mariah Carey is a bad singer. There is little point of talking about "current voice" or opining on things Mariah can do to improve how she sounds: her voice is irreparably damaged to the point where she sings badly - if she can even sing at all.
I get no pleasure in saying shit like this, truly. It used to make me somewhat sad and that in turn led to anger. But I do recall many years ago blaming Mariah for the decay and I will stand by those words. Given that she has hardly sung a live note above Middle C in well over a decade, there is some wonder to be had at exactly what she has been doing. I can hazard many guesses and they would involve things that none of us should do if we want to not damage our voice. Save for deepthroating Donkey Kong, alcohol and smoking are just about the worst things you can do to your voice. And given Nick Cannon's ability to spread his seed into an array of vapid women, all three vices I would suggest may had their way with Mariah's throat.
And this is what really used to piss me off amongst a handful of other things: Mariah Carey ruined her own voice. She didn't take care of it. Neither did Whitney Houston. I would like to think that were I to have been blessed with pipes like that I would have done everything to protect them. But like modern youth vilifying people long since dead for behaviour once considered the norm but now understood to be wrong, it is very easy to make judgement on behaviour when you do not appreciate or even understand the context. Were we to have lived another's life, would we have behaved the same or would we have applied our superior attitude or morality and succeeded where they failed? It is very easy to cling on to virtues when your back is not against the wall.
Whether Mariah's personality shift and the negative behaviours that ensued are a direct cause of her losing the ability to sing, or the other way around - or whether the issues were hardware or software - I can say that I have made my peace with the fact that she probably ought to have done a lot more to look after her voice and it is time to stop singing and promote a legacy.
I do feel extremely, extremely sorry for Celine Dion who famously looked after her throat, knowing full well that she had been handed the winning ticket, only to now face losing it in, what can only be described as cruel clutch of circumstance. Marcus Aurelius wrote that we should receive things without pride and let go of them without attachment. How very hard that is with the things you love most in the world, eh?
The albums must end with Caution. There is no good to be gained from any further exposure of the decay. Absolutely none at all.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch: totally loving revisiting the Dreamlover original. Still can't find a live version of her singing the ending like the record, so if anyone knows of one I'll loving you long time.

This song needs to be retired from her set list for good. Mariah has never sung this song anything like on the record, talk less of singing it better. It is also one of her harder songs to sing because it's built like a tradition ballad and keeps building and has a clear big climax, she is yet to do justice to 25 plus years later. I don't know why she still keeps on singing this particular song in every show, that makes her vocal decline so obvious.

No need to apologize. Like I said, I'm a huge Mariah fan. I would love to go see her perform in a concert. Even if she walked up to a tape recorder and hit play and let her original vocals play out, I would still be happy to see her. Lol. But I'm also torn because other than AIWFC and maybe WBT most younger people don't know about her and her body of work. We can easily throw around her accolades but most people don't know or frankly don't care. That's why I hate seeing consistent bad performances from her because it overshadows all of the great work that she has done, at least in the minds of most 25 year or younger folks.

I'm sorry for causing drama, I knew as soon as I clicked submit, I regretted it immediately. You all have the right to criticize MC, but sometimes the words so extra. The suggestion that she has to get a surgery is a bit much, but I know you have every right to say what you want.
I was just disappointed. I enjoyed the show, and then when I come here, it's all negative. And it is the same all the time. Maybe I am just not getting it. Maybe I am living in another dimension. But some lambs are just happy to see Mariah, and maybe I have low standards lol, and then each time after that, you come here and it's all negative.
I already know that her voice is not the same. So I don't have these high standards, so I just enjoy the music and seeing her out and performing on stage having fun with everyone is all that matters. I'm sorry again, I didn't mean to be harsh.

New low? (102,716)
by Tevin from USA
| |
|
|
I agree Jamie. Do any of you guys remember Leona Lewis? I remember when she was on the [X Factor] and her subsequent two albums that followed, she was belting her head off, with crazy runs and transitions. The media was billing her as being the next Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston. Anyway she went from that, to being really pitchy, couldn't sustain belts and having other vocal issues. Though she still doesn't have the same voice as before, she was able to gain quite a bit of her voice back. I can't remember what she had, but she has some kind of disease or illness that caused major vocal issues not to mention body issues too. My point is we never know what goes on behind closed doors. Even though she looks amazing, Mariah isn't getting any younger and more and more health issues can develop, that can effect not only her body but her voice. I mean look at poor Celine Dion. I wish them all love and recovery.

Maybe she had a cold or viral infection, as during [One sweet day] that's is one serious decline in vocal ability, surely if that was the true state of her voice she wouldn't be arranging to sing one of her biggest hits with Boys to Men [Boyz II Men]. Yes her voice has declined over the years but to not be able to sing at all, I don't believe it's all due to her current vocals something else is at play here like illness.

My final thoughts (102,698)
by Tevin from USA

As many of you know I rarely post on here even though I read all the comments. I'm just posting a lot now, not only to vent, but to say that I'm truly worried and saddened. I hope Mariah will be able to bounce back in some way. My wish is to get one more Rarities or MC 30 album, with one new song, that she can studio piece meal together, if she has to, and then for Mariah to enjoy her time with her family, and other business ventures, including her movie about her life. I hope she doesn't retire though, if she can just show up to shows and instead of performing a huge difficult set list, that most "good" singers now days wouldn't be able to get through, she should just sing one song from start to finish. No tricks, no gimmicks, no smoke no mirrors. All I wish is to be able to stand before Mariah one day and hear here gracefully sing Hero or Vision of Love, with a piano or guitar. Ok my rant is over. Take care everyone, and remember, everyone's opinions matter.

I say these comments out of love. I agree with you Randy. I know Mariah loves to sing because it's literally her life and passion. I never would ask nor want her to retire. Even if she only produces songs in a low register with no belts, I wouldn't have a problem with that because I love her artistry. But with everything you mentioned in your post about all the smoke and mirror tricks that Mariah does, I can't help but wonder, doesn't that have to be torture for her. I mean I can't imagine standing on stage having to do all these tricks to prove your voice is still there, while worrying that something can, may and probably will go wrong in front of hundreds of not thousands of people. I just hope people on her payroll aren't forcing her to do all of these events if she isn't able or up to it.

So I watched the concert and to be honest, this is how MC has sounded since Caution. No better no worse. The strained sustained notes to prove she can sing. The cutting up of long notes and adding stacatto "hey hey". The moments of clarity that we all know are backing tracks. Background singers singing verses that don't have backgrounds on verses on the original. The fidgeting with the ear monitor. The tossing the hair from side to side when she lips a note in case she miscounted how long to keep her mouth open. All of this is normal. So to come here and see you guys say it's a new low or it's bad baffles me. Some of you are acting like the house just caught fire. It burned down a long time ago.

Hi Chicago Lamb, yes I loved the show, the show of Boys 2 Men [Boyz II Men] singing, while literally almost every note that Mariah sang did not come out. Oh and I'm not talking about "did not come out", as in pitchy or flat, I mean no discernable sound came out of her mouth. Something is very wrong and I hope she can fix it. We can show love to others but also point out flaws where they should make improvements. I mean, I can't believe I'm saying this, I'm no professional but I honestly could have sang all those songs better than Mariah.

Not to add insult to injury, but this is clearly voice issues not just vocal, as in singing, issues. I noticed multiple times when Mariah was speaking to the crowd, like when she yelled welcome Boys 2 Men [Boyz II Men], her voice broke and she didn't complete the phrase. That was just with her speaking. Something is very very wrong. But it's Mariah Carey, and if anyone can bounce back, it will be her.

Let's not be too hard on her, and still remember that she might be doing the best she can with what's left of her ability right now, which from the clips we saw is not much. Her voice issues are serious seeing as how many times she kept sipping tea and still it wasn't enough. At this point, her options are slim – it's voice therapy or the much dreaded surgery. Being in her shoes must be very scary as we all know what happened to Bonnie Tyler's voice and Julie Andrews more recently. I know it scares Mariah to think of surgery and putting her gift, career and future all on the line. What I want to see Mariah do is a lifestyle change and to seek professional help. Build your voice from the ground back up again with a voice therapist and a vocal coach, those exercises really do work. Find out what you've been doing wrong and correct that technique. You'll be surprised how much of her vocal problems are superficial.

Positives: Ok so Mariah looked amazing. It was nice to see that she is in good terms with Boys 2 Men [Boyz II Men] and Miguel. Some of the performance was good and I loved her energy.
Negatives: OSD (in her defense she struggled with this song back in 06) and she was in a lot better vocal health then. That's a super hard song to sing, full high belts.
Devastation: She lipped part of VOL. Like what the heck, that was the only song that she never lipped in her 30+ year career, no matter how good or how bad she sound on a particular day. I honestly can't process this right now. It was her one sacred song.

What is your initial fan story? (102,630)
by Tevin from USA
| |
|
|
I was three when Daydream came out, and one of the first songs that I remember hearing in life was Always Be My Baby. (Still my favorite non ballad MC song.) It was played by everyone, all on happy occasions, so every time I hear that song, I remember great memories of my early childhood. But I had two moments when I became a fan. One was when I was four and Butterfly came out. I remember my dad bought that album and so did a lot of my close family. My mom told me I would stare at the cover art of that album (side note and also Brandy's album too) lol.
Anyway we all were on some road trip and the song Butterfly came on. I remember my aunt, with a confused look on her face, saying to my cousin "why is she singing like that" (she was talking about Mariah's whisper register). Then comes the bridge and climax. Then I hear her say oh wow, that's the Mariah I know. Let me tell you being so young only 4 and hearing that bridge and climax of Butterfly, I thought to myself, this is the best voice I ever heard. It is forever etched into my memory. That and my mom and dad butchering the high belts in Honey. Hahah.
Anyway my second fan story is of course the TEOM era when I was old enough to truly appreciate the mega star that Mariah was and literally every TV station and radio station had her on rotate for a solid year and half. Man other than 96, 2005-early 07 was peak Mimi takeover. I miss those days.

I was in Kindergarten when Ms. Nuñez played "Open Arms" for us. I stood there open-mouthed, like flabbergasted. A year later I got emancipated and made my mother buy me the Daydream album.

Thanks T for the insight. Any word on a Rarities 2 or continuation of MC 30? Granted that means more work behind the scenes for Mariah, but she doesn't have to create new songs or a album since they would have already existed.

None of these predictions will happen. At least not this year. Her close friend and lamb correspondent already confirmed on Twitter that no SUD and no Butterfly Lounge this year. She also noted that Mariah is a human being who needs time and space and cannot just snap her fingers and produce an album. So she urged patience. I only bring this bad news so to temper expectations. There are no new Mariah songs this years.

I live this new song by Kelly Clarkson. I would love it if Mariah would create a song like this. Powerful vocals yet easier to sing.

Steven, out of curiosity, why do you think Beyonce is in her version of an E=MC2 era?

Preach. Yes, the double standard is crazy. I remember reading an article about Pink having to "fight" to get her songs played after 35. 35 is old?
Mariah beat the odds with hits like "Obsessed" and "Beautiful".
Mark my words, Beyonce is going through her E=MC2 phrase right now. Her fans better get ready for memeroirs and beyond.
