Reflections of my expectations have come to wither (103,655)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
Mariah is a cultural and music icon, she's known around the world and continues to be known. She might not be as popular as she was in her hey day but neither have any of the other legacy music icons. There comes a time when they are no longer as popular but it doesn't mean they are no longer liked and respected for their work. Even Madonna who I loved in the early days is making a bit of a fool of herself these days but the legacy is still there. God forbid anything was to happy to her or even Mariah at some point people will remember them for the successes they had in their prime and those that have stayed loyal fans will remember everything. You can't undo history, Mariah was an absolutely huge artist for a long time and no one will forget that. And she's still present today not many can say that. I use to worry if she wasn't popular anymore but I've come to the realization that we can't control time and every artist has their mainstream time. I'm now just happy to have appreciated her music and continue to listen to it, both in anticipation and in reflection.

Firstly, I want to thank everyone for being respectful in their replies. I think the problem is me. I love and believe in MCs artistry so much I want her to be a cultural and music icon. Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder. The amount of respect and weight those names carry is what I wanted for MC. Anything that feels cheap, exploitive, desperate, or narrowing, grates my nerves. I want MC to be a cultural and musical icon. And listen, I'm hard on Madonna for the same reason, popping out her nipple, fillers and dating 28 year olds while 60 is destroying her legacy. I probably need a break from the board. I'm getting too invested again. Once again, for me the house is on fire and no one in the party smells smoke. I'll go enjoy the music in the way it always has brought me comfort, nostalgia and distant fellowship. Have I mentioned I'm bipolar?

Totally off the mark Mariah has delivered this year alone with Music Box 30, news of a new album next year and the Rarities a couple years back. Mariah is defo in on the whole defrosting thing and why shouldn't she, a fantastic song that everyone loves and now a mini tour to go with it for the USA lambs. Just because she's huge at Christmas time does not make any of her other music and less important. Christmas time is one if not the biggest times of the year, she's always loved Christmas why should now be any different.

She said it herself on her Facebook concert promo. "Yes, the actual defrosting has begun." If she's fine with being frozen from January 2 - October 31 each year, why am I arguing for her legacy. I'll join the lambs. Yaaassss Mariah. Hit number one again. AIWFCIY is the best thing you've ever done. It's your signature song. It's the only part of your catalogue that matters. My queens slays 9 weeks every year. AIWFCIY has won 28 Grammys, gotten you into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and won you a video vanguard. Your legacy just like your voice is completely intact. How did I do?

The greats (103,619)
by Andrew from the UK

Jamie I really do hope social media does one. It is horrid and vile. I dabbled in Facebook, Insta and X for a few months each in my time but my anxiety levels rose sharply, I was becoming addicted, falling down the rabbit hole many times.
There was something magical about owning hardcopies of film and music media. My Mariah CD collection was a pride and a joy. Purchasing and adding a release to it was an event, not least the excitement and anticipation of going to Woolworths to buy it. And buy it with cash or a bank card. Handing over something physical to receive something physical in exchange allowed for a consideration of loss and gain within the transaction. As it is now, there is no true measurement of success or popularity, perhaps.
I recognise how much of a dinosaur that makes me sound.Yet there a feeling of emptiness that streaming gives me. If something were to feature in social media ads or commentary, I will, like others, open Spotify immediately to play it. I would suggest that rather than hearing it on the radio and then committing to a journey to purchase it, the way of streaming is unrepresenative of how good something it. If something requires no significant commitment then artists' careers simply become self-perpetuating. The likes of Taylor Swift would not have survived in the 90's because their output is not as good, and the commitment from the end user would not have materialised.
That Mariah was so popular 1990 - 2010 is something quire remarkable.

I often wonder what will happen in the future, will they all get sick off social media and having things instantly. Already with the surge in vinyl are we seeing people going back to traditional ways. I'd be quite happy with social media going as I feel it's having a negative impact on almost everything

Will Christmas music, itself, survive the new modern era of downloads and social media? As on a bell curve, the peak in Christmas music "resurging" every year must surely have come and will one day be gone. Can you really not envisage a world where the kids say no to Christmas music and embrace the influx of multi-varied offers?

A question for Eric (103,574)
by Andrew from the UK

My brothers fell in love with Mariah Carey the same time I did, albeit not so much. This was 93/94. My father liked singers, not bands, also. My brothers took me to Mariah in London in February 2000 for Rainbow - mostly because I made them. Even then, none of their friends made fun. Seeing Mariah Carey was an event. No shame.
I wonder: what were the three comments you received? What do your friends and family think now? We have had our ups and downs, you and I. But I think it quite something that for 25 years you have kept something like this going. Not least, the latter half of that incorrectly correcting my grammar.
If I could suggest something: some new colours and new layour would work.

Interestingly, the non-MB30 edition of Music Box, that was on streaming services at the US 10-track edition, has now added "Everything Fades Away" as the 11th track. I can only speak for UK streaming, would be interested to see what, if anything, has been done across the pond.

Triumphant (103,557)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
I really like Triumphant. I like the message behind it, I understand why it didn't do great as she's only technically featured on the chorus and the performance at rocafella just highlighted that fact as she just showed her face half way through the performance. So that didn't help. Perhaps if she's titled it Rick Ross-Meek Mill-Mariah Carey Triumphant it might have got more attention. As I think more people were too busy discussing her lack of presence on her own single as apposed to the actual song. But who knows. Fantastic remixes too.

Daydream is Mariah's magnum opus (103,484)
by Andrew from the UK

Part 4. He's the handsome sweet bloke that genuinely - genuinely - looks like that moment meant the world to him. And to be fair he handles himself far better than I have in front of her - especially given that he had Justin and Alan to contend with. "Oh, smurf off, Jamie" and "Come on down, the water's lovely" was very quickfire comedy and it was probably the funniest part of the show. To have dealt with that and still hold your own in front of that crowd and Mariah herself was impressive. To, further, seize the day and try to get down onto the set is nothing short of gobsmacking. It's a great part of the show.
Enough of me giving compliments - they hurt my head. I'm not used to it.

Well said Andrew I totally agree, she loved those times otherwise she wouldn't be paying them any attention. She was there present at the time and without any effort she looked comfortable and enjoying herself. Nothing is perfect and there were times she wasn't happy but on the whole I'm certain she misses those times.

Mariah was artistically "stifled" on Music Box? How interesting.
She did, did she not, write the songs? She did, did she not, produce the songs? She did, did she not, create the vocal arrangements? She did, did she not, commission the remixes on which she...? Oh, you get me. The pretention of you.
Mariah does, does she not, sing Hero in every concert? Mariah does, does she not, sing Dreamlover in every concert? Mariah's breakthrough hit, was it not, Without You? The audacity of you.
Music Box is one of the best selling records of all time. Do you see Mariah denying or lessening her involvement in it? Do you hear her, for example, wishing it had been different to the extent she was forced into this in slave labour? The stupidity of you.
The lambs do bleat foul under the impression that pre-97 Mariah was chained to a piano leg with Walter Afanasieff sucking the creative blood out of her. What absolute nonsense you have willingly been fed. Do not regurgitate it in my presence.
(That's a posh way of saying STFU and GTFO.)

Taking care of herself (103,443)

Wow Mariah is looking in great shape, from her recent Instagram post. She really seems in a good place right now and taking care of herself. Let’s hope that with the added confidence of looking her best she starts to focus on giving us some new music and working on those vocals. Maybe reliving the [Music Box] era has given her the push she needed to remember how great she was.

The previously unrealised songs are fantastic. It always amazes me that Mariah can write songs like My Prayer in her early 20s. I really think Mariah should keep future new releases as simple as possible. Don't overthink the theme, lyrics, melody, production. Lately, too much time has been spent constructing a song that's current or relevant. Whereas, songs like My Prayer does the opposite, and in a good way. Beautiful song.

I have just relistened to both about fifty times now side-by-suide, but I can't hear it. She seems to end the phrase on the same beat the guy in the audience ends his contribution. Can you imagine being that guy, now? On another note: when you listened to Hero at Proctor's Theatre did you picture the audience member in a black and white striped T clapping and shaking his head in disbelief? I bet you did. Now, can you imagine being *that* guy?

I am beside myself that this is now on Spotify.
"This is another new song from my new album, called Anytime You Need A Friend. I just wanna dedicate to everybody here tonight. Thank you for coming."
It is the very first thing I heard from Mariah whilst my brothers - who had 'borrowed' the VHS from their friend up the street - watched it in the living room. I walked in to see what it was I could hear and couldn't believe it. I know every single hand movement, head movement, foot movement from the performance.
