Triumphant a very big disappointment

Two weeks ago, in a personal statement to her fans, Mariah said: "So I can finally announce to you that my new single is coming out early August. It's called Triumphant (Get 'Em) ft. Rick Ross and Meek Mill. I wrote Triumphant when I was going through a difficult time and it helped me get through it. When you hear it, pay attention to the message and the lyrics."

Randy Jackson called the song "inpspirational" and Bryan-Michael Cox, the song's co-writer and co-producer, told MTV: "This song is kind of inspirational. It's close to her heart, and I think her fans are going to really, really be emotionally attached to this song." So fans were expecting a song like "Make it Happen", "Fly Like A Bird", "Can't Take That Away" or "Through the Rain", although the rappers Rick Ross and Meek Mill did promise no good. Today, fans could listen to the full song for the first time, and most of them were very, very disappointed.

First, fans don't think this is a Mariah song. "Ok, I thought this song was Mariah Carey featuring Meek Mill and Rick Ross? Not the other way around. Oh I'm so disappointed right now. [...] There was no need for an appearence by any freaking rapper," Special K wrote. "I can't say I feel this is Mariah's song. It sounds more like she is the background singer," TJ said. Stephen agrees. "I really think Mariah sounds like the featured artist." And Stacey wrote: "The title should be Rick Ross and Meek Mill ft. Mariah Carey. It should be on their albums, not MC's."

Second, this is not an inspirational song. "I don't get it. Where is the 'There's Got To Be A Way' Mariah, she doesn't need these rappers and these negative lyrics," Ann wrote. Divo said, "This song is mediocre from the theme, and the vocals, etc. I have higher standards for you and JD."

Third, her singing. "I read somewhere that she would be singing in her full voice register and I'm actually still waiting. And I know I'll probably be blasted by some 'lambs' about how I'm stuck in the past or whatever. But I remember once upon a time where Mariah actually sang and it was amazing. [...] Now I'm kind of wondering if I even heard the right song. I really don't mind the rap, but she basically sang the chorus and bridge. And that's it. Was that even a Mariah song?"

Brad explains how many of the "old" fans feel today. "I knew this day would come but hoped it would be far off. I have been a loyal lamb for 22 plus years. Biggest ole lamb out there. No one can question that on this board or elsewhere. That said, Triumphant reduces Mariah to a computerized, generic background singer. It is, simply, awful. There is no hook, no song, no melody. Who told her this was good? I'm so ashamed as a fan."

JJ has the same feelings as Brad. "I've been a long time fan of Mariah's, ever since the beginning Vision Of Love dropped in 1990. But I must say I was looking forward to a single that she would use her full voice and really kindle the older moments of her singing career. However this song as a first single is a catchy reminiscence of Breakdown with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony back in 98' vibe. I'm not impressed Mariah."

Dufrense wrote, "It's a sad day, I'm officially not a lamb anymore."
