An explosive debut for Mimi
Mariah Carey, Music Box, Daydream, Butterfly, and now The Emancipation Of Mimi. This week Mariah welcomes the fifth #1 album of her career. The #1 debut is the biggest of her career thus far with an incredible 400,000+ opening besting the previous mark set by 1999's Rainbow. EmancipatioN also earns a #1 placing on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and the Billboard Comprehensive Albums chart (a chart for the top 200 selling titles each week regardless of their age). Interest surrounding Mariah has also caused Greatest Hits to debut on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Albums chart.
Mariah's singles are not to be left behind as "It's Like That" rebounds to #27 on the Hot 100 and "We Belong Together" leaps from #61 to #30. Both songs benefit from strong digital sales but especially "That" as it enters the top ten on the Hot Digital Songs for the first time since its debut. "Together" makes a nice splashy debut on the Pop 100 at #39 as Top 40 Mainstream stations turn in "It's Like That" for the new single "We Belong Together".
50 Cent has matched his previous longest streak at #1 with a ninth week atop the Hot 100. "Candy Shop" though is on its last legs and it looks like the new #1 won't be "Hate It Or Love It" but instead "Hollaback Girl" from Gwen Stefani. The #3 placing already matches the highest peak she had as a member of No Doubt ("Underneath It All" in late 2002). "Don't Speak" - one of the longest #1 stays on the Hot 100 Airplay chart - never had a chance to chart on the Hot 100 due to a lack of a commercial single and chart rules at that time.
With Mariah sitting pretty at #1 on the Billboard 200 (and Mudvayne debuting at #2), 50 Cent is forced to relinquish his #1 throne. "Hollaback Girl" renews interest in Gwen Stefani's album as it re-enters the top ten. Another band member turned solo act, Rob Thomas, will give Mariah a run for her money for the #1 slot next week.
