Personally, I'm happy for Mary J Blige and her induction, she's very much deserving of this, as well and loved and respected by many. There's room for everyone and I know one day Mariah's day will come.

Why should I respect an artist who has ride on other artists' coattails to succeed? You can take away Diddy, Dr.Dre, and the other collaborators, and see what happens. Then again, it could be jealousy on the part of the voters. Everything that she does gets crazy coverage in the press. Therefore, they resent her for it. I would resent it too, if my ceremony got worse ratings than a MC Christmas special.

2002-2003 what should have been Charmbracelet's singes? (106,132)
by Libra Lamb from USA

On the standard issue of the album, The One, I Only Wanted, Subtle Invitation and Through The Rain would have been my single choices. More missed opportunities.

2002-2003 what should have been Charmbracelet's singes? (106,128)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
You got Me feat. Freeway and Jay-Z - She gives the same vocal style in this song which went to #3, "I Know What You Want/Where I Belong".
I Only Wanted or Bringing on the Heartache
The One (original)
Through the Rain, show that vocal, excite people (*the finale single dhalings*), close it out with the emotional song - Portrait, Outside. etc.
I think as a lead single "Thought the Rain" wasn't what people wanted, we were still only coming off the dance beats of Rainbow and the Glitter soundtrack. I think an upbeat/dance song from Charmbracelet would have been celebrated at the time.
What are your thoughts?

The Emancipation of Mimi (106,130)
by Libra Lamb from USA
| |
|
|
I remember when MTV premiered the music video for It's Like That and thinking wow, this is a new sound for Mariah but falling in love with the song and the music video immediately. My friends were listening to the radio in Atlanta when they heard me call in and request Don't Forget About Us, they still remind me and we laugh about it. I loved this era, nobody could tell Mimi anything because she owned every part of this. Love love love.

The Emancipation of Mimi (106,126)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
You know what's funny? I remember the exact highway on-ramp I was taking on March Rd. headed to Downtown Ottawa when suddenly "It's Like that" came on the radio for the very first time. I was stunned there was a new MC single and almost drove off the over pass bridge. The DJ radio introduced the new song for the very first time with these exact words: "I don't know why she keeps trying, but we have to play it, so here it is." And boom clap clap clap the new legendary era began. That DJ will go one to be playing new, beloved, Mariah songs for the next 4 years (from "It's Like That" to "Obsessed"). He must have felt like a fool after the fact. It's one of those Mariah memories of hearing new music for the first time glued to my heart and brain.

I hope we get a fresh new single that radio will be dying to get their hands on, like the old days. One can dream, right? It's been too long since the last one. I thought GTFO and With You were gonna be big hits and sadly was disappointed. I guess we'll see.

New single (106,096)
by Robert-Anthony from United States
| |

When MC does release something new, it's going to be a day of celebration. However, something tells me that her days of huge radio impressions on pop radio will never happen again with anything new. Maybe I am wrong. And this dry season has to been her longest time ever without releasing new music. When you start listening to MIAM reminiscing about the good old days, then it's been a long time since we have had a new Mariah Carey song that was hot on the charts. Lol.

Musicals (106,103)
by Libra Lamb from USA
| |
|
|
People are so desperate to have their name attached to Mariah Carey that they reach anywhere they can, they know her name will bring much needed publicity to their otherwise mundane articles. Glitter is most definitely not a musical. Not to mention the soundtrack is nothing short of amazing, and they know that. Desperation calls for desperate nonsensical articles and rankings. If we're going to talk about the worst musical, Mean Girls recently released as a musical is by far the worst I've seen in a long time. My husband and I could not sit through the entire thing. They almost ruined the original for me, almost. Glitter may not be good, by most people's standards, but I still love it and give it a pass because it's Mariah Carey at her campiest. If anything, blame the director Vondie Curtis Hall.

Academy recognising Glitter (106,085)
by Libra Lamb from USA

I think you hit the nail on the head Joachim. I never really pieced it together but it makes sense the way you explained it. I happen to love Charmbracelet because the songwriting was phenomenal and the melodies were great even though it was not a typical Mariah Carey album. Also wrong single choices. But not everyone has heard of it or given the album a fair chance. I Only Wanted, Subtle Invitation, Miss you ( feat. Jadakiss) and The One (both original and So So Def Remix) are my favorites. Shout out to Got a Thing 4 U.

Academy recognising Glitter (106,084)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
| |
|
|
I actually think the reason why Mariah sounds so restricted on Charmbracelet had everything to do with Glitter and her breakdown. I think she felt the world really was tired of everything Mariah, especially her voice, many people back then complained that she was just shouting, not that this had anything to do with reality. Mariah was overexposed after the 90's, much like the risk Taylor Swift is taking now.
Charmbracelet shows a Mariah that is scared to annoy or pushing more people away, almost to the point of self extinction. She did exactly what people wanted her to, become a shadow of her self, almost a different artist singing wise. Well, we all know how that turned out, it's her most forgotten and least interesting album, only positive is that it felt really personal. I'm glad she came back in 2005 wanting nothing else than to be herself, showcasing every part of her voice. If you can sing like Mariah Carey, why would you ever try to disguise that?

Great news. I hope Mimi drops a collaboration album this fall. It makes perfect sense at stage in her career. All of the legends have done it from Lionel Richie to Barb[a]ra Streisand to Carlos Santana to Smokey Robinson. It would be a great prelude to her annual Christmas season reign.

Is Mariah Carey popular? (106,071)
by Libra Lamb from USA
| |
|

Mariah Carey was working hard to get her debut album out when Taylor Swift was in infant diapers, I'd say she's got a lot more years on her and more people know her impressive body of work than Taylor Swift's. I'm not denying the star power of Taylor at all, I think she's phenomenal even though I personally don't care for her music. And also I don't know how they measured the popularity contest. I'm just saying that I bet the article is right to place MC ahead of her. We love everybody.

Is this list credible? Mariah at number 21 and Taylor Swift at number 43? Questions pops up in my head. Don't get me wrong, I love MC, but I believe that TS is more popular. Or did I read the list wrong? I am tired, so that might be an opportunity.

This "I'm a Mariah Carey fan" version of the "Of course" trend is so iconic I love it. The Mariah-isms are iconic. I'm dying at the "of course I run out of the frame at the end of the video" with her signature hand under chin wave and running out of frame in her social media videos and also the "of course I didn't mean it when I said I didn't love you so" and leaning against the wall with arms stretched haha. So iconic.

That video lives rent free in my head. He said Jennifer who? She said Jennifer López. He said who is Jennifer López? LMAO. It's a go to video whenever I just want to crack up. I used to like her until I realized she's stolen from other artists by using their vocals and passing them off as her own as well as stolen creative property. She lost me so quickly. Also, her music is just not good, her voice is so much worse. Sorry about it.

Quick question (106,020)
by Norman from USA
| |
|
|
This is just for fun, okay? I was wondering what you guys thought would be the bigger pop culture moment: a) Mariah and Madonna having live on-camera moment together. (doesn't have to be a duet. It could be something like Whitney and Mimi did as presenters, or a PSA, or cameo in the other person's video.) Or b) Mariah and Celine doing something similar.
I only mean it as a Zeitgeist moment to move the needle. It's not about liking or disliking anyone or whatever they do. Simply in terms of a moment. Thoughts?

I believe MC is hurt that she doesn't have her range like she used to, record her songs like the way she is used to recording them. You know she is a perfectionist and loves to add different vocal techniques and runs to her songs. I bet it just hurts her that she can't do Lead The Way runs anymore.
