Best albums of 2014 so far

Unexpectedly, 2014 has been more about looking back than looking ahead. The best albums this year include some classic country from Miranda Lambert and old-school soul from 63-year-old Lee Fields. There's an emo comeback of sorts led, not by Taking Back Sunday, which has a strong rock album of its own, but by a new generation, including Modern Baseball and The Hotelier. And, in somewhat of a surprise, Mariah Carey looks to her early days for inspiration for her much-delayed new album. Here's a look at the best of the year so far, and some thoughts we had about them when they were released.

11. Mariah Carey, "Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse"

After several high-profile delays and changes in direction, Mariah Carey heads back to her musical sweet spot on "Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse", with big R&B ballads that show off her powerful voice and its stunning range. While Carey, in recent years, has been concerned with sounding timely, on "Chanteuse," she goes for timeless, with grand results.
