Furious Good Morning Britain viewers have slammed the show's "bizarre" interview with pop diva Mariah Carey as "tasteless" and "unfair" after the star was put on the spot about the horror shootings in Las Vegas. The Hero singer was due to chat to presenters Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid about her Christmas tour, and was suitably perched on her sofa alongside her huge Christmas tree.
Yet the angle of their interview switched when news of the tragic incident which broke on the Las Vegas strip as a gunman fired bullets into a crowd at a music festival near Mandalay Bay, killing two people. Victims were seen covered in blood with others cowering in fears behind barriers and the ITV breakfast show aired live videos capturing the terror of holiday-makers as they were locked in their hotels. Currently multiple hotels in the city, including the Bellagio, are now in lockdown as the chaos ensues.
Mariah, 47, was completely unaware of the drama taking place as she prepared to chat from her home. Ahead of their chat, Piers, 52, explained Mariah knew the city "very well" after recently rounding off her music residency in the gambling hotspot. He asked her about her instant reaction to which she looked troubled and said: "This is horrible. I pray for the victims."
As Piers showed her live scenes of the terrifying situation unfolding she was stunned to silence. Finally, she added: "That's awful. I pray for the victims. I hope all this can stop." As she was put on the spot she continued: "This type of thing happening anyway is a huge tragedy. I hope we have an end to this as soon as possible."
Viewers took to Twitter in frustration the star had been quizzed about the incident - after not knowing it had happened. Others - who missed the introduction to her Christmas-themed chat - wondered why she was lying in front of the glittering festive plant. One raged at GMB producers and wrote: "So tasteless breaking the Vegas news to Mariah Carey live on TV, shame on you."
Another put: "I feel sorry for Mariah, she should have been briefed about the shooting before the interview," as another put: "Someone should have spoken to Mariah off air letting her know what was going on then post poned, instead of throwing that at her."
A confused viewer put: "Mariah Carey being interviewed on breakfast tv about the shootings in Vegas, where she is sat is a Christmas tree," as another quizzed: "How could Mariah Carey or any of her team not know about Las Vegas before going live on GMB? Not fair on her or anyone to be told live on tv!"
One bemused fan put: "GMB interviews Mariah Carey reclining on couch about the live terror attack in Vegas. Tweets you never thought you'd write," as a confused viewers added: "Heartbroken for Vegas? Can someone tell me why we're asking Mariah what she thinks though? And why she has a Christmas tree behind her?"
As it stands, two people are dead and dozens wounded after a shooter sprayed bullets into music festival crowds from a hotel balcony in Las Vegas. Police have confirmed one suspect is "down", with crowds from the Route 91 country music festival pictured fleeing the area near Mandalay Bay Resort Casino and victims seen covered in blood.
Footage taken on the scene captures concert goers reacting first with confusion as the sound of automatic gunfire rings out before dashing to take cover. Taking a selfie, the woman filming the chaos says: "This is bullsh***. People are on the ground. Security is out. S*** just got real kids."
