"Jesus born on this day" was one of the three new compostions on "Merry Christmas". A full-blown production number, it employed not only Walter's synthesized orchestra, but background singers and a children's choir as well. The tune was quite solemn and hymnlike, but the arrangement, oddly, made it less religious and rather more glitzy, behind lyrics that overtly praised Jesus.

As Mariah told Larry Flick in CD Review, "You have to have a nice balance between standard Christian hymns and fun songs. It was definitely a priority for me to write at least a few new songs, but for the most part people really want to hear the standards at Christmas, no matter how good a new song is."

"Jesus born on this day" was only released as a promo in the USA in November 1994.
